just what Betsy Layne needs!!:thatsfunn

He was only 24-6 at Breathitt County with a larger talent pool before being screwed out of his job by the locals and taking shelter at Jackson City. Rolleyes

He beat Betsy Layne to. Thats where I was impressed by his coaching. Guess you can't judge a coach by one game. I didn't know what his record was.

Harold Tackett folks will be the next coach.

You're probably right from what i've heard. Has he coached on the high school level anywhere?
#35
He coached Prestonsburg's girls for a while, and I think he coached at Jenkins but im not for sure about that one though.
#36
folks, there are only two people i can recall that have been around floyd county basketball longer than coach tackett; ed taylor and pete grigsby. i had to do some thinking to pull those names.

that fact of the matter is that harold has been involved for almost twenty years, hes won at every level, and he's turned more than one program around. i'm sure he'd do the same at betsy layne high school. he's been coaching the grade school team and those boys who graduated this year haven't lost to a floyd county team IN THREE YEARS.

i'm not sure if Harold is interested in the job, although im sure he's heard rumors that he is thanks to the rumor mill jugernaut that is bluegrassrivals and similar sites.

I hope harold does take the job if he's offered. betsy layne would be lucky to have a coach that has won district titles (he's coached 6 or 7 years at the high school level), conference championships, and received state and national recognition for his grade school and aau teams. he's never had a losing record at the grade school or high school levels, and im sure the good times would keep on rolling if he transitioned from bles to blhs.

there could be some brighter days ahead for the bobcats. look out 15th region!

Are you counting his time coaching girls high school basketball at Prestonsburg? His final year at the helm they had a losing record.

Agreeeee with Zone on this one...

Coach Halls last year at Brethitt it was a bad record with no seniors. they got rid of him so someone could take that team he built the year before and make it look like it was the right decision, sounds a lot like the situation Coach Rose is in the team to beat next season so get the coach to be and a BOE member to get something passed by the board so Coach Rose could not come back. If coach no would not call him coach but if Harold gets it then BL will struggle next season cause to many players have told me they would not play. But good luck to Coach Hall and Coach Rose no matter where they end up.

I have to disagree with some of your statements, assumptions and facts. First of all, Prestonsburg was coming off a (19-10) season during the 1999/2000 campaign and a district championship, followed by a regional run under head coach Bobby Hamilton according to the KHSAA website and their records. So when Harold Tackett took over, the best he could muster with that group of young ladies was (17-13) & (17-14) over the next two seasons with some great talent, followed by a (3-25) season which would be his last.

I think "turnaround" is a strong word to use in this instance considering the team he was left when he started and how he left program 3 years later.

And as you can see, he did have a losing record.

Don't get me wrong, I like Harold Tackett and he's always been nice to us when we are at Betsy Layne, and knows how to run a smooth tournament and take care of the media.

Good research and comments !!!

Interesting scenario taking place at Betsy Layne. I would think alot of coaches will be interested in that position. Harold Tackett may have a hard time matching credentials with the applicants for this job.

i've heard the same story. If its true its a shame. Rose had BL comming along pretty good by the last of the season. example: the game against Shelby Valley. If Newman doesn't foul out with 1:27 left, they beat the best team in the region and possibly go on to the state tournament.... But if he can't return next season i'm still hoping for Hall, record or not.
I'm new to the Forum and havn't followed high school sports the last several years, but i've loved the game for the last 40+ years either as a participant or a spectator and I know a good coach when I see one!

Too bad it took Coach Rose all year to play the kid. Smile

Seriously, last year was Newman's first year of HS basketball Rose did a solid job helping him improve in the paint. You could see the kid get better as the season went along. I did wonder why Newman didn't start towards the last few games of the season to get him ready for heavy minutes in the postseason.

Newman has a soft touch inside, hopefully his footwork improves this summer and learns to avoid body contact on defense and look for the rebound more than the block.

Personally That has been Coach Rose's problem since the very beginning. He gets stuck on 6-7 players and doesn't have the guts to experiment with his bench. Newman proved time and time again that he needed to be the one in that starting lineup, but Rose never wanted to mess up his rotation. He's had tons of talent over the years, but doesn't wanna give any of them the time of day, because he is stuck on his starters, and maybe one or two off the bench. That's why a couple of years ago when BL lost to Johnson Central in the Regional SemiFinals, after Thacker fouled out Rose didn't have noone to sub for him except Case. Then after Case wasn't hitting his freethrows he had noone to go to, because throughout the season he had never gave any of the other 10-11 boys on the bench the chance to play. Just my opinion on Coach Rose. Different season, but same story year in year out.

Agree with you totally about Newman. I've known him since he was a kid. By the way he has a younger brother who was a freshman this year. He's already about 6' 2" or 6' 3" and has improved all year. He has a good outside shot as well as an inside game as well. He has that agressiveness you see in Jarad. His name is Jordan. Look out for him in a year or two.

So whose gonna be the coach? I heard Brent wasn't leaving.

Don't count Brent out just yet. He may very well be back next year. I don't think this is a done deal yet!

I know he will. He'll file an appeal to the Board's decision in June or July. Then there'll be a long process to get rid of Rose.
#52
It shouldnt be a long process because the players wont get to play any summer ball.
#53
They should be allowed to play summer ball. Until he is replaced, or if he has an appeal filed, he is still the coach.

Ugly situation brewing at Betsy Layne.

South Floyd will take Coach Brian Hall anyday. It takes a coach with talent to bring out the player's talent. Brian has great talent at coaching.

I don't think South Floyd is in question here in this thread.

brent rose is the man. he will be the leader of the bobcats when basketball season comes around, quote me, promise, say whatever you want.

Brent Rose is perfect for the job and give him this year to prove it.
#58
Gettin rid of Brent Rose would be the best thing BLHS has ever done. That team had so much talent this past year. They could have beaten us at the expo hands down. but rose didn't have the ability to play the right players. if blhs bobcats were smart they would get rid of him asap.

Coach Rose is a good coach....keep him!! The problem at Betsy Layne isn't the coach!!! But if you do screw him out of it.....you better jump all over Brian Hall. He is a great person and coach!!
