kyrifle Wrote:Pat Talent didn't play at UK, his brother Bob did however have a short stint there.

Yeah it was Bob, and again I have heard alot of stories about Bob as well. Their last name is one of the best last names ever, Talent. That to me is awesome.

And BTW I love this thread, lol.

Anyone ever hear of Porter Powers? He played for the old Auxier high school in the late 50s. Was a very good hs player and went on to play in the SEC for Alabama. In the 15th region though he was overshadowed by King Kelly who was at Wayland at the same time. Just wantin to see what anyone else knew about him.

I've never heard of him but seems like there were a lot of great High School players here in the mid to late 50's

Well I have been on the ukathletics.com site and nowhere is Pete Grigsby listed as a former player and I believe every player that played for UK was given a letter but yet he isnt on the list of lettermen. So that to me proves he didnt play at UK. Hell even guys that played one year and transferred are listed on there, so theres no way he played at UK. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Pete played for UK in 54 and 55, now does that prove our point?

From the following website it has this information on Pete Grigsby:

http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/Statist..._Pete.html

Played in 3 total games in his UK career (1953-54 season) with 0/2 FG and 1/2 FT (50%), 1 career point and 2 total rebounds. According to the site he transfered to Kentucky Wesleyan after this season!
#38
Wow, the way he talks he was an all-american at UK, the funny thing is he never mentions KY Wesleyan....lol
#39
Pete was in a cab outside of St. Louis one night after UK beat the Billikens back in 54 or 55. Coach Rupp, Pete Grigsby and some of the other players pile into a cab and the cab driver starts talking crap about the Cats. According to the story, Coach Rupp started bashing UK also just so the cabbie wouldn't do anything to the kids if he realized who they were. Pete (according to the story) was sitting shotgun! About as close to the action as good ol' Pete got unfortunately was that night!!!

Just wondering JR, do you think your State Championship team was better than the Pelphrey teams of the late 80's? Just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Different times, different styles, different opponents. I have always heard Coach Runyon say that if they could have just beat Louisville Ballard (and Allen Houston) that they would have won it all that year. They had already beat Clay County that year and that is who they would have faced in the finals.

As far as which team was the best, it seems that we were almost similar to each other - with the 96' team with the advantage. John Pelphrey - Myself; Joey Couch - Josh McKenzie; Keith Adkins - Todd Tackett; Mike Minix - Matt Ratliff; so what player from the 87' team matches up (size wise, skill wise) with Craig Ratliff from the 96' team? Slight edge for us I guess!!!

Craig Ratliff was tough, with Graig and yourself probabily the best inside duo I had ever seen in KY hoops. He was pretty versitile and probabily could have played somewhere big in college, IMO choose the wrong sport after HS(should have played Basketball), and thats why he ended up at Pikeville College a few years down the road. Wasn't he going to Play at UNC-Greensboro??

JR, ... comparing the 87 and 96 PHS teams is like comparing diamonds and platinum...it's all good man! I had the pleasure of watching both teams play several times and both were in my opinion the top two teams to come out of the mountains in the past 40 years. However I differ in opinion with you on somethin...the comparisons are Pelphrey/Ratliff; Counch/McKenzie; Adkins/Tackett; Minix/M.Ratliff. I think the 87 team had no one to match up with you. Pelphrey's game and yours are different..he played more like Craig. I also think that PHS would have won it all in 87 if they had had one player in the 6'3' to 6'6 range who was a quick footed and physical defender...he wouldn't have even had to a starter..just someone to come in and focus on shutting down the other team's best shooter and maybe grabbin a board or two. He wouldn't have had to be a scorer---PHS had plenty of fire power! If PHS had had another defensive minded player to put against Houston the score probably would have gone the other way.
