15 region players in the NBA

From what I was reading on another thread we have a couple of players from the 15th that were drafted by the NBA and one (Donnis Butcher) that played for 10 years in the NBA. Do we have anyone else that may know of any other players that have been drafted by the NBA or played a couple of years?

Charlie Osborne was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals in the old NBA, but was injuried in pre season and was never able to play after that.

If I'm not mistaken, King Kelly Coleman (Wayland) was drafted by the NY Knicks (Knickerbockers).

The NBA used have to multiple rounds for drafting...

In the early years of the draft, teams would select players until they ran out of prospects. The 1960 draft went 21 rounds. By 1974, it had stabilized to 10 rounds, which held up until 1985, when the draft was shortened to seven rounds. By agreement with the National Basketball Players' Association, the drafts from 1989 onward have been limited to two rounds, which gives undrafted players the chance to try out for any team.

He was drafted by the Knicks. Yet he didn't make a splash in the NBA. He played in the ABL with the Chicago Majors.

14th Region Players who suited up in the NBA...
Sam Smith, Hazard High School who attended KY Weslyan & Louisville and was drafted by Atlanta in the 3rd round, 1977. Played for Milwaukee & Chicago.

Donnie Butcher, of Meade Memorial, played 5 seasons in the NBA after being drafted out of Pikeville College in the 7th round by the NY Knicks in 1961. Butcher played 2 seasons for the Knicks and 3 for Detroit.

Osborne played all of 4 games during the 61-62 season for Syracuse.

Another 14th Region...All-American Johnny Cox of Hazard & UK, drafted TWICE in 1958 & 1959 by the Knicks. He played for the Chicago Zephrys for one season, 1962-1963.

It should be mentioned that Frank Selvy, from Corbin High School who once scored 100 points in a college game while playing at Furman University, played 9 seasons in the NBA and was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in 1954.

I think 4 games is better than none, but as I said in an earlier post his injury kept him from returning to the NBA.

You were correct that his injuries kept him from playing. I found a killer site with NBA/College Basketball history - that's where all my info came from.

Steve Butcher played at Pikeville College and went on to tryouts with Detroit until Dave Bing guarded him one on one. Steve was the KIAC Player of the Year when at Pikeville. He was a good one.

Donnie also coached parts of 3 seasons in the NBA and had a 52-63 record. Another interesting note was that Donnie played at Meade Memorial High School and was drafted in the 7th round of the 1961 NBA draft, and Charlie played at Flat Gap High School and was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1961 NBA draft, and both being from Johnson County. I would have loved to see those 2 played against each other in high school .

Kelly never actually got to suit up for the Knicks because of some problems with an agent. His agent messed some things up and nearly got him in some deep doo doo. I just wish Kelly would have starighten himself out and been able to play at WVU, he would have been teammates with Jerry West. Could you imagine that backcourt.

I believe Alvi Ratliff also played a lillte pro ball at one time. I know Rupp cancelled his two week vacation at the time to come and be guest speaker at Meade for Alvin's graduation.

After Alvin Ratliff went to the Army after his freshman year at UK he enrolled at Delta State in Mississipi, where he attained Little All-America. Alvin ahad a try out with the Atlanta Hawks after his college playing days and was the last player cut. Atlanta kept a guy named Tom Payne who got into some trouble about two weeks into the season and was let go by the Hawks.
