I see you added Jerry Fultz to the list. He also played at Wayland in the late 60's and went to Southwestern La. to begin his college career. Back in the 60's and 70's there was not near the coverage of players and schools as we have today. No one heard of many of these players that were really good players. Johnny Martin at Allen Central was a good player that teamed up with maybe the best of the best in a guy named Jerry Manns at Garrett High School.

Charles Henry Osborne of Flat Gap.
He is the second all time leading scorer in Kentucky High School basketball history, trailing only King Kelly Coleman.

JR Vanhoose has to be on the list, he was Mr. Basketball in Kentucky. Rudy Thacker from Maytown wasn't to shabby eighter.

Rudy was a great guard in the true meaning of what you would want from a player. He went on to play for Vandy after graduating from Maytown( Allen Central ) and was a starter there around 1970. Team first player and did not care how they could get a win or who scored.

I glad you mentioned Charlie he was an oustanding player at Flat Gap H.S. he also went on to play at at Western Kentucky and was elected into their Hall of Fame a couple of years ago. He was also drafted into the NBA.
Another name is Donny Butcher of Meade Memorial H.S. Donny went on to play at Pikeville College and played for about 10 years in the NBA with New York and Detroit

So Johnny played at Garrett?

And Rudy Thacker was an awesome player out here at Maytown. He led the nation in FT% at Vanderbilt when he was there. He is a great person to talk to, told me alot of great stories.

Couldnt have said it better.

Everybody talks about the 15th region players in the last 20 years but those guys couldnt hold a light to the old timers. Also I need to mention Jimmy Cox, the father of the JBS guard Tate Cox, he was a great player for Garrett. Speaking of Johnny Martin and Jerry Manns those guys were guards under 6 feet tall that could dunk with anybody. My dad was the center on that Garrett team and he talks about how Jerry Manns could dunk anyway he wanted and he was only about 5 feet 9 inches.

Pat Talent was on Rupp's Runts

Speaking of Jerry Manns, didn't he actually spend some time in the service before playing at ALC I believe.

Guys Grady Wallace must have been pretty good went on to have an outstanding career at South Carolina, lead nation in scoring.
Bruce Belcher had 44 pt and 41 rebounds for Wheelwright against Pikeville, and went on to play at Marshall.
Jim Rose of Wheelwright was an all american at Georgia Southern

I noticed a familiar name on that list, Pete Grigsby. Someone told me that he played for UK in his college years, but I havent found anything proving that. If someone has any proof, I would love to see it.

He transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan where he did play. He was an All Stater at Martin High School ( Allen Central ). Geri was better than Pete and he will tell you that.

Pat Talent didn't play at UK, his brother Bob did however have a short stint there.

Bob Porter is on my list...always. The mayor was a 2 year starter at Baylor in the late 60's. Of course, I'm biased.

Thanks Wyatt Earp, I appreciate the info. I saw the stats of Geri on the khsaa records site, and I can see, she was a heck of a player by the stats I saw.

Carroll Burchett played for Flat Gap in the late 50's and went on to play for Coach Rupp amd started his juinor and senior years.

Also played with my father and uncle at Flat Gap.
Cant wait to hear all of the "who is Jerry Lucas?" comments. lol

Jerry Lucas played on what was considered one of the best teams ever at Ohio State and recognized for having John Havlicek who went on to play for the Celtics for years, Coach Bobby Knight, Mel Noel and Larry Siegfreid also were on that team that won it in 1960 and were runner-up to Cincinnati in 61 I think. Lucas was I believe the player of the year in college basketball and then played for the Cincinnati Royals and later the Knicks when they went to the NBA finals. He was about 6ft 8in and had bad knees but could shoot really well for someone at the time considered so big. My brother played golf with him in Florida a couple of years ago and he was very active in christian work. My brother is as bad a golfer as Lucas was good in basketball. I remember the name Carrol Burchett and it is good to get on here and see some of the names that made basketball great in this state. Speaking of Bob Tallent he played for and started for UK then transferred to George Washington and went on to play in the ABA I believe for a little while. The Tallent's were something else as a group of brothers (4) that were great in basketball and could play anything (even a guitar ).

I wouldn't wager any of my money on that however.

Any of you guys remember Jamie Hamilton from Pike Central? Averaged about 30 a game and beat out J.R. Vanhoose for 15th region player of the year. He's a good friend of mine came down here to Magoffin one night and dumped 47 on us.
03-17-2007, 05:36 PM
VanHoose was 15th region POY as well as Mr. Basketball, he didn't beat him out.

Your right kyrifle it was Bob that was on Rupps Runts.

I am surprised no one mentioned Lowell Hughes.
