Magoffin County 73 Paintsville 71 (Overtime)
#31
congrats Hornets!

Wow! Sounds like a GREAT game. Congrats, Magoffin County! Good Luck to both teams at the Expo Center.

Congrats to the Hornets. This was one of the best games I've seen in years. Both teams played very hard.

Congrats to Coach West. I don't know of any other coach who has impacted BOTH girls/boys basketball programs at one school like he has. He has worked tirelessly and it has paid off. Coach, you made us proud!!!!

I also think the way Coach Runyon acted after the game was a class act. Not many other coaches would greet the opposing coach at mid-court with a hug. He understood and appreciated the heart Magoffin played with. Not only is he one of the greatest coaches in the state, but he is a great person. I, personally, wouldn't mind seeing a Magoffin/Paintsville rematch at the Expo Center.

First time in History that both the boys and girls both are district champs in the same year and I am so proud of both teams

Good win Hornets...after the game one of the Paintsville players came to the plaza and was running his mouth about the refs and if anyone didnt get the calls they should have it was Magoffin.... GOOD WIN HORNETS!!!!!!!!!

I bet Arnett feels like a Million Bucks right now, I know I would...Huge shot. Welcome to March Madness!!
#37
Go Hornets!!
#38
Both teams played very hard and it was a great game to watch. I also believe that if either of these teams had played this sloppy in the first round, JCHS and LCHS would be representing the 57th.
Congrats Hornets!!! You got the job done!

I hope that they learn that when they pressured MC, that the Hornets were having to take at least 8 seconds to get to half court, even called for a 10 second count a time or 2! Then....4.6 seconds to go....PHS backs off the pressure and allows a 15 footer for the win!!!

You mean Pville did not pressure the ball? Unbelievable

They tied it up in both regulation and OT by pressure! then just back off and looked like they went into zone. Arnett just drove straight down does a spin move and cans the J!!!
Arnett had seven turnovers tonight when Paintsville pressed! I'd take my chances on what got me in the position everytime!!!

I agree with you 100%, you have to pressure the ball and dont let them beat you with a "easy" J.

since just about everyone knows who I am, this is for T.I.G.E.R.S. who had just pmed me, but for some reason it wouldn't let me respond.

Someone didn't know who you were Gure? I'm shocked... Congrats MC, this was a great game and even better environment, the 57th is gonna be well represented in both boys and girls @ the Expo center.

liked the spinning walk shot lol, but i guess u cant call those walks at the end.

Lets count up all th walks P-ville got away with and scored on...they had to ge at least 20 pts off of walks...and Erics shot was an exact replica of the last second shot of last seasons match up.....

I am with offthehook on this one, I would like to see Paintsville draw Shelby Valley in the first round. They have been their thorn in the Tigers side for the past 4 of 5 region tourneys. Time to put up or wait until October to break out the round ball again. Hats off to Magoffin Co. on the win, and a great showing of respect from Coach Runyon at the end of the game.

sounds like a good one

The best game I have ever watched outside of State tourney. Magoffin came out on fire and Paintsville showed they are a great team by not getting shook. Magoffin almost gave the game away so many times but Pville could not get back in it. Van really stepped it up hitting some clutch threes. To say that these teams played sloppy, they may have but I don't believe anyone in the 57th could have beaten either team tonight. BMR showed great class by congratulating Neil West. He is one heck of a coach and he seems to be a great person. On the other hand the players should learn from his actions. It is pretty sad when your coach has to tell you to go and get your trophy. Paintsville acted like they didn't even want the trophy, which is pretty sad. Oh yea and 3 of Magoffin's starters fouled out.

Oh and BTW Landon Slone is a clutch player. I would love to know his % from the FT line. His missed the big one tonight but he should still be proud that he played a good game and shouldn't get mad at himself.
#51
Congrats Magoffin, you deserved it the way you guys played. As for the walks, BOTH teams walked all night long and it was called 50% of the time. Arnett did walk at the end of the game but rarely does a ref call it in that situation. Game shouldn't have even went to OT, I'm not the smartest man in the world but I know it took longer than 2.7 seconds for Paintsville to get the ball in, spin to the goal, miss the shot and get a tip in to tie the game.

What's up with Coach Miller leavin the stands and goin down to sit on Magoffin's bench so he could yell at the refs, that's B.S.

As for Paintsville vs. Valley first round, I'd say that's the way it will end up. If that's how it ends up, they BETTER be ready to play and will have to have their best game of the year.
#52
Good game Ferguson and Grimm. You guys gave it your all and carried the team tonight!

That free throw wouldn't have mattered, they still woulda got beat by 1 after Arnetts basket. And I think he was 10-13 from the line tonight.

EKY Sportster Wrote:Congrats to Magoffin County!! The Hornets deserve what they got - two District Championships, boys and girls!!! The boys hung in there and never gave up.

As for the game itself, the effort was there by both teams, but I have never seen two teams try so hard to give the game away! Paintsville missed enough easy baskets and free throws to have put it away before OT and Magoffin turned the ball over and made silly mistakes enough times to have put Paintsville away in regulation as well. It was a hard fought game by both teams (which made it a good game to watch) but it was very sloppy. Both teams had chance after chance to connect on the knockout blow and neither could do it. If either team takes that kind of game to the Expo Center they will be coming back home real quick. Get it together guys and represent the 57th well.

As for Paintsville, they deserved the loss. They played hard but played very poorly! They were lucky the game even went into OT in the first place and even still they had their chance to win. NO ONE stepped up to get it done. I hate to see them lose the District Championship, but I am glad they are going in as a runner-up. They need to be put up against a District winner first game and prove they can win it. And I hope they draw SV first so we can settle that one right away! If the Tigers expect a trip to Rupp, they will need to beat SV anyway, so it might as well be first. Good luck!!

Yeah they were very lucky that in the last 3 seconds of the 4th that the Paintsville time keeper stopped the clock with 1 secong to go so the Tigers could put a shot up. But congratulaations Hornets you all deserved it tonight, awesome pep section tonight too, and good class too BMR.

Nobody likes to lose man, I guess you woulda been all smiles and giggles recievin a runner-up trophy. Oh yeah, all 5 of Paintsville's starters had 4 fouls. Nathan Arnett was the only player that fouled out that was even meaningful to Magoffin, the other two weren't anything but decoys pretty much. How many fouls were called on Eric Arnett and Devin Rice.

I know that I am just saying that he had a excellent night from the free throw line.

No one stopped the clock with 1 second left Rolleyes . I agree it took longer then 2.7 seconds for Paintsville to score from the time they first touched the ball til the ball went thru the net. They probably didn't start the clock when it should have been started, but they didn't stop it with 1 second left.
