I agree cry me a river! FYI they have an air conditioner that will freeze you out of the gym. You people would complain no matter where the games were being held. But its their home court, so if they want it hot, so be it. Don't let the heat be a reason to lose a game. Matter of fact its not about you, if about the ballplayers, wins and loses.

I think you all just need to get over yourselves and stop complaining about our gym. If you don't like it, don't come. And in response to Paintsville's fans taking up all the seats in the first game, think again! I think Johnson Central had their fair share of fans in the first game as well on Tuesday. And the reason there weren't two session...Sheldon Clark didn't want it that way. Wanna complain, write your local representatives or make a donation to the 'I don't like Paintsville's gym so I wanna complain' fund ( and please, no out of state checks)!

That is true, but it would have helped!

First, I think that Paintsville has the right to host the District tourney as much as any other team does, even if no one were able to watch the games. Second, I think that Paintsville has one of the most historic and oldest gyms in use in the area. I like it when it isn't over-capacity with fans (which real crowd problems only occur about 10% or less during the season)!
But yes the Tigers could use a bigger gym. It makes it hard to host large events such as district tourneys with multiple teams on the same night. And aside from the lack of seating for large events, there is also the problem with the fans not having enough room to walk and play having to be stopped. I would love to see them expand it either out toward second street some or a little on the side, or both! I would think that it would be cheaper than building a new gym altogether.
But we'll just have to make do with what we have until the opportunity for better comes along.

To top the 400 people capacity of the gym paintsville's fan had come befor they started let people into the gym and had allready taken well im gonna say 25% of the seating in that cracker box it's crazy.
I hate to tell you this. BUT, I was on the stage and the entire left side was a sea of MC White! The right side was split between SC and JC fans that showed for the first game. 75% of the PHS fans that showed, stood in line and came in after the first game. But, it is over and done now. So let's not worry about it for another 5 years!

Is that a 100% true statement? Because it has been rumored for years, but hasnt happened yet.

The current gym was opened to start the 1952-53 season, so yes it is historic. Just think of the teams, players and coaches that have been on that court and in that gym - Inez, Meade Memorial, Wheelwright, Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Salyersville, Clay County, Lexington Catholic, all of the Paintsville teams, Billy Ray Cassidy, Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino, Denny Crum, Roy Williams, Billy Donovan, John Pelphrey, Ritchie Farmer, Bobby Keith, Coach Runyon, etc.!! That building has a lot of histroy - it is a great atmosphere and I wish that all kids in Kentucky could experience it during tournament time!!!!

Great place for the Middle school to play and carry on tradition. Find a piece of property and build a new one.

I have been to Paintsvilles gym numerous times and not the first time have I complained about it. Although it isnt the biggest gym around, but its one of the loudest and most entergetic, as a fan your so close to the action you actually feel like your playing in the game. Its one of the best atmospheres in Eastern Kentucky and basically one of the best in the State IMO. Great place to watch basketball.

I'll take the basketball atmosphere at Paintsville's "too small gym" anyday over any other high school gym around. If you don't like it stay home and quit crying.

I like Paintsville's gym. It's just a great basketball atmosphere. My only complaint is that it gets to dang hot in there!

I agree with alot of posts on here. The real problem is that the small traditional city schools are a thing of the past. Million dollar facilities and football stadiums seem to be the norm here in Eastern Kentucky, with no question about the amount ever being asked. Once your state maintained, larger county schools get their funding the goal turns to putting the smaller budgeted independent school out of buisness. Alot of great basketball history lies here in Eastern Kentucky, Carr Creek, Inez, Paintsville, Hazard, Meade Memorial, Oil Springs, and others I am too young to know of. Is Paintsville's Gym too small? Yes, but with coal severance tax not being diverted to projects with independent school systems where does the income come from?

but i traveled to paintsville quiet a bit when you and the tigers were winning.. all thru your high school career and at times it was standing room only there, and the away games too. you and todd brought alot of attention to eastern ky high school sports..people like bobby knight.. pitino and other college college coaches never looked past lexington high schools..so paintsville owes you thanks !!!
and with that said.....tell shawna and denise i said hello

I don't know why people always think that bigger is better. In my opinion, history and tradition is more important.

Thanks for the great compliments. I have nothing but great memoires of my time in the "old crackerbox" at Paintsville. I just feel fortunate that I did get to play at such a tradition rich school in a tradition filled gym, not many kids get to do that and I am grateful for all of my experiences!!!! I will tell the wife and mother-in-law hello!!!

I don't know how many times this is gonna happen... but I agree with BigEagle.... I think if folks can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
& yes, we have an air conditioning system that could freeze the balls off a pool table... but it is only used for graduation.... PTL....
Do we want it on during basketball... HECK NO... CAUSE THAT'S NOT HOW WE'RE MADE!
I look at it like this... Little Gym/Cramped facilities.... Big Heart/trophy!

first of all they didn't let fans in early. that was the cheerleaders that were sitting over there and that was just so that we would have room for a pep section that arrived later. second of all they have a new air conditioning system that works perfectly fine, yet they just don't turn the air on full blast. if you sit on the stage you can feel the air great and it feels kinda nice!! i agree that it is hot and that it is really small but when you aren't funded very much money by the state and you are a small city school that pulls for what money they can get they are doing pretty well.

The Guru Wrote:Well at least get some facts straight. The gym holds a lot more than 400.
There might have been 20 seats taken, Paintsville didn't have over 150 fans that were there for the first game. and most of them sat on the stage.
There were Paintsville Fans locked outside too. I know of 15 kids at the table in the back not allowed to come in until the first game was over. Not to mention the one's outside.
The SC administration would NOT agree to sessions which would have made everyone's life a lot easier!!

I couldn't agree more!!
Our admin puts the $$ where it counts ... IN OUR CLASSROOMS!! That's why we have the highest test scores of any high school in any county contigous to Johnson (or any other HS in the same county). If you would like to verify that info, check www.education.ky.gov .
Our team pulls the crowds w/o the fancy gym. Granted we would love one, but our gym is home and has been for several decades. And when you look up on that wall and see state champions looking back at you as well as the names/triumphs of those who have gone before you, you learn what tradition means and what you are a part of.
So consolidate schools and build bigger gyms all you want, but what PHS has can't be replaced and quite frankly, I don't want the bigger gym!!

Coach R LOVES the hot gym. It's hotter than love after a Tiger practice. They crank the heat and tough it out because he says so!! It's called conditioning!! He'll give his players any edge he can!!

paintsville gym is horrible period

Yeah I agree the seating was horrible....but oh well ....it could be worse!!

I've always enjoyed the heat during a game, especially a tournament. I think it adds to the intensity of the game.
