I mean the tape from nationals, not any tape from county... I wasn't there....
02-17-2007, 07:14 PM
To me, is they can go by a different set of rules for "indepedent" then how should they be allow to compete with "county schools".
Would for example, would Prestonsburg or Lawernce County be allowed to have their middle school compete at KAPOS?
Also, I thought that according to title 9, you couldn't say a Junior Varsity was cheering for girls. That you couldn't make a difference in the teams. You have to have the same score sheet for each squad and let girls choose what team they wanted to cheer for.

Pikeville Junior High cheers girls varsity games so they are qualified to go!

02-14-2007 10:17 PMbelfry_varstycheeryeah , i cheer for belfry, last night at the middle school county game, there were a few girls [i wont mention names] who were going out of hand, and having bad sportsmanship saying things like,"Well we won nationals!" after every cheer our middle school girls did. Yes, we agree thats a very good thing, and congrats. But theres one thing i must say...
BELFRY WASNT THERE!!
Just to let you in on something...dont blame Pikeville's cheerleaders for something they didn't do or have any control over. First of all, some of them didn't even get home from the airport till after 11 and the game had to already been over! but I would love to see Belfry's junior high go to nationals and see how hard the competition really is...these teams are the best of the best and there is some stiff competition! And if Pikeville did say quote "we won nationals" thats probably because they were really excited and proud of all their hardwork they put into this routine all year long! Its an honor to be recognized as a national champion!
and by the way...your quote "belfry wasn't there!" is I must say worse than saying Pikeville won nationals..does anyone agree?

I still think that it takes the fun out of highschool cheerleading and basketball games, if you're not in high school. It also creates a disadvantage for girls who don't compete until they reach the high school level. Pikeville has cheerleaders who are 12 and 13 years old, so by the time they're seniors they have competed in KAPOS 6 times. I know that no one will ever say anything to KAPOS about Pikeville Junior High because of their connections with KAPOS. Those fimiliar with KAPOS know that staying on everyones good side is always best.

It boils down this way.... Many squads have junior high girls on their cheerleading squads, PERIOD! Pikeville is not breaking any rule or not allowed to compete in Kapos because they have junior high girls on the squad. People don't say anything, not because it is Pikeville, but because the rules are written so that schools that include students grades 7-12 can include all ages on their competition squads.... waivers are usually filled out, etc.
Unless I miss my guess, the junior high squad that competes at nationals includes ONLY junior high students, while the KAPOS squad has some high schoolers on it (at least this is how it used to be). It seems to me as though we should be happy that a team from this region did well without qualifying it as "If so and so was there, they wouldn't have won..." This thread is a congratulatory thread for the girls who worked their butts off and won a well-deserved title, not a bashing session.

I never said Pikeville was breaking any rule. There may be many squads that do this, but how many from the 15th? The teams that are consistant winners at State at Large don't seem to have middle schoolers on their team.
Congrats on the win, I'm not trying to take it away from anyone. I'm not bashing Pikeville and I didn't say that they didn't work hard or diserved their title. I just don't agree with some things, and I'm sure I'm not the only person.

normally they have freshmen that do not go to varsity, but this year they didn't. All they have are jr. high girls...... and they do cheer girls varsity games so they are obligated to compete in Kapos state. they will not have freshmen or above at state

It seems that a lot of people on here are complaining about the youth of Pikeville's second cheerleading squad. First of all, Title IX(and the state) designated that the younger squad at Pikeville was good enough and competitive enough to be classified as a varsity squad. They cheer for the girls basketball team, home boys and girls junior high games. Second, how can people get on here and complain about a junior high squad beating varsity squads? Seems to me that some of you all need to quit complaining about situations that you know nothing about and work hard to upgrade your programs. They are required to compete at KAPOS by the local school administration. They do well to finish in the top five at KAPOS due to competing against the likes of Madison Central, Clark Co., Henderson Co., Dunbar and other varsity squads. They are the only junior high squad in the state that does this because the school has two competitive squads as designated by the Title IX folks in Lexington and they do usually have one to three Freshmen on the squad. It just happens that this year all of the Freshmen are on the Varsity squad. I can only remember one year over the last twenty, that the younger squad has had anybody other than Freshmen or below. And finally to you 57thscarlett, your above posts reminds me of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. If you think that KAPOS caters to Pikeville, then you have some serious issues. If you have issues with competitive experiences, then you need to get your local school to attend more competitions to get that experience. And finally, get better educated on the issues that you are complaining about.

^ Actually her local school does attend competitions, and they won region & sweet 16 state last year. And if your going to say KAPOS doesnt cater to Pikeville, your crazy. Nobody is trying to take anything away from the Pikeville squads, because they are very good. Just a little bit of confusion about why a middle school team competed in the junior high category at nationals, but competes as a high school team at KAPOS.

There is no confusion. Junior high is as stated at nationals. (Junior High age)
As for the other, that is what the state dictates. This has become a gripe session by some. Why should anybody care. If Belfry would beat JC, are they going to complain (no). It is just 12 and 13 year olds competing against 17 and 18 year olds, and that is why at state they usually do no better than 4th or 5th. I did see JC middle this weekend and they are good. As for KAPOS, they are controlled by mainly Louisville and Western KY people, and do not cater to EKY. Pikeville has a good reputation state and nation wide for its program. It would be good for the whole area if other people elevated their programs to that level.

I believe that too is legal and ethical, why not for cheerleading?

This is ridiculous. All squads follow rules that are set, they do not have rules made for them. Quit acting as though something sinister is going on here with this group of talented girls. If varsity squads here cannot compete with them, work harder, don't insinuate that they should not be allowed to compete in their rightful place!

Ok Hillbilly, obviously my 12 years of cheerleading experience and the region and state titles my squad held means nothing.
[size=3]I've expressed the way I feel, which it the point of this sight. I was looking for friendly discussion. However, I will not be talked down to or have my knowledge and experienced questioned. You have no idea who I am behind this screen name, so you have no idea how "educated on the issues" I am.
I won't change my opinion on this subject so trying to make me seem "stupid" or "inexperienced" is a waste of time.
By the way, the President of KAPOS is from Morehead. I donât think that qualifies as Western Ky. Maybe youâre the one that should âget better educatedâ?

I am aware of the past president of KAPOS. I know her and she would love the comments on catering to Pikeville's squads. And by the way, I been around all of this for 25 years so do not provide any lectures. If you are educated in the manner that you have stated, then you should have known all of the answers to the questions that you raised in previous posts.

first and foremost this thread was started to congratulate P-ville on the win @ nationals. It was a well deserved victory. So why all the bashing? I saw them compete at regionals and they were awesome. should do well @ Kapos this year as well.
Secondly, My only complaint with this thread is , If someones says Pikeville white did not preform well, then it's oh were just a junior high squad, on the other hand when they win , it's well were just a junior high squad, and were better than most high schools, So I guess it works both ways. BUT what people should remember is either way that squad is awesome, and works very hard, so why bash it at all. either you can compete with a junior high or you can't. Pikeville white is a Girls varsity Squad, and cheers almost 4 games a week, Girls varsity basketball, and the junior high boys, yet they fit competition practice into that as well, so why bash that kind of dedication no matter who it is.

Amen!
02-21-2007, 10:16 AM
I dont think anyone is bashing them. I'm just curious why they compete as a junior high team at nationals, but as a high school team at KAPOS. Are the rules different, or something?
02-21-2007, 01:29 PM
No, the rules are not different except that there is no junior high division for KAPOS! What is hard to understand.... half of this thread has explained this....
02-21-2007, 03:37 PM
Stop being rude. I have not once said anything bad about Pikeville, because I think they are an excellent group of cheerleaders, and it will be hard for anyone to beat them in the next few years. And no what I asked had not been explained(and you still really didnt). If rules are the same, then why dont they compete as a high school team at nationals, because they are obviously good enough to.

I am not from Pikeville, but I am sick of answering the same question.... AND, if you reread my post, it was not rude!
They are good enough to compete as a high school team, but would you compete against your own varsity squad when they are in the same national competition?

Nationals are based on the grades of the squad members.
Junior High - 8th grade and below
Freshmen- 9th grade and below
some years Pikeville has 9th graders and they have to compete as Freshmen
some years they have all junior high girls and compete as a junior high.
KAPOS is for varsity squads (cannot use the words girls varsity or jv because of Title IX) Where they are not in a separate middle school and because the state and Title IX have classified them as a varsity squad and they cheer for a varsity team.

Thanks for answering me. It makes more sense now. And to PHS, I didn't realize that both pikeville teams would be in the same category.. I thought one was small, and the other medium.

way to go girls! great accomplishment!

because we cheer for EVERY gv ballgame..we also compete in the district tournament against the high school squads so i think we have every right to compete in kapos

the reason we get to compete is because we cheer for the girls varsity at almost all the games... and you shouldnt be talkin about us just because your jealous!!
