Is Karen Deboer in over his head?

In a word; yes.

Didn't see this result coming.

If they don’t bounce back and make the playoffs, they will find some way to get rid of DeBoer. One ‘small’ problem. His buyout is $72 million!!!

This feels like a "Larry Bird, Kevin Mchale, Robert Parish aren't walking through those doors" type moment that Rick Pitino had with the Celtics.
Nick Saban ain't walking through that door.
Nick Saban ain't walking through that door.

The person who tried to follow Saban at Alabama was destined to be in over their head from the moment they took the job.
Regardless of how he performs, this will be a better job for a coach that follows DeBoer than it was for him.

Given the price tag, I'd say that it will greatly depend on how he performs the rest of the way, if there's another program that will eat some of his buyout, and what type of candidate they can get with whatever they have left once they've passed around the hat.
If he doesn't perform well in the Wisconsin game, the heat will be on.
They have a pretty tough schedule (@Georgia (9/27), vs. Tennessee (10/18), @South Carolina (10/25), vs LSU (11/8), vs. Oklahoma (11/15), and @Auburn (11/29).
Would think he survives a loss at Georgia, though a terrible blowout might be the beginning of the end. In any event, that's the game I think he can most afford to lose.
I don't see him there in 2026 with a loss to Vanderbilt or Missouri unless he tears through the rest of the schedule.
Losses to Oklahoma or Auburn would not be good, but are probably more of a nail in the coffin if he doesn't perform well in his four biggest games (UGA, UT, SC, and LSU).
Also don't see him surviving to 2026 with a loss to South Carolina unless he beats at least two of UGA/UT/LSU and sweeps Auburn and Oklahoma; any other result would leave him with at least four losses.
Where it gets interesting is if he finishes 9-4, with losses to Florida State, a bad loss to Georgia or LSU, and a not so bad loss to Georgia/LSU or Tennessee, an upset loss to Oklahoma or Auburn, and wins against the remainder. An Auburn loss would obviously be more triggering to fans, but a second straight loss to Oklahoma would raise eyebrows as well, but if they are 9-4 against that schedule, you'd have to think they'd be in a good bowl game for a win against another quality opponent.
That type of nine and four scenario wouldn't be up to most fan's expectations, but it'd also be tough for the people actually paying the bills to not feel as if they were throwing the baby out with the bathwater and doubling down with their second coaching search in three years. Maybe they find an Arkansas for their Calipari, but most of DeBoer's background is in smaller divisions and the northern parts of the Midwest, so I wouldn't count on them finding someone to bail them out.
