Heard it’s Matt Varney. IMO, a terrible hire and the program will head downhill fast.

If this is a legit post, then you know nothing about Belfry football.

You can criticize all you want but there is not another person they could have hired that knows the Belfry program more and how things have been ran there for so many years than Matt Varney.

Belfry returns 95% of team from last season. Anything less than a semi final game appearance will be a failure. Varney has some BIG shoes to fill. After this season talent drops quite a bit. His job will be extremely tough with expectations fans will have.

Lot of risk involved with this job. What happens if he loses to Betsy Layne?

Belfry would steam roll Betsy Layne into oblivion.

No shade to Betsy Layne at all, but c’mon let’s be reasonable.

Then he should immediately be fired because my dog could coach Belfry to a win over Betsy Layne. That’s like saying what should have if East Ridge beat Pikeville. Never gonna happen

Belfry faithful sticking to the ship...until it takes on water. Hypotheticals are always welcome. Even UK coach Joe. B Hall made comments about how hard it was to keep a standard at his alma mater. Now, yes I know, apples and oranges, but the principles apply.

The standard at Belfry is championship or bust. Very hard to maintain that, no one is denying. However Matt Varney has 8 championship rings sitting at home so he knows a thing or two about winning.

Not denying anything or anyone. Just throwing points out there. Best of luck to Mr Varney as he takes over a tall task.

The negativity here is just appalling. Just some POS hiding behind the anonymity of a keyboard, when they wouldn't dare to say anything to anyone in person.

Most Belfry fans say that the talent drops off after next year. The Pirates competition definitely goes up when they went to 2A. Is the new coach going to be able to weather the storm until Belfry has the horses to make a run at the title in 2A? Like I said in the Belfry thread…this man has big shoes to fill and it’s almost an impossible task. I hope the community supports him and I wish him the best.

Belfry always has a way of developing kids and these young kids grow up. This senior class is loaded as is the junior class. The key in the next 2-5 years will be who develops and grows that can support the real good talent that will be there and who develops to be the next 2-3 year starter at QB. I have been a BHS fan over 50 years and there have been ups and downs and there will continue to be. However, I believe they will remain competitive for a good long time.

Belfry will still be a top program in the state. Yes coach is no longer with us and no one can replace him but he built a foundation that will not be destroyed overnight. A lot of people had concerns when Coach Matney passed away and Johnson Central and they have been just fine. Maybe a little talent drop off but they have been a top 10 team in a loaded 4A. Belfry will do the same. Coach Varney will do a great job.

Congratulations Coach Varney. He's an old hand at this. I'm sure he will do Belfry proud!!

Chicken sh**s!
Agreed 1000%.  I’ve been around this board a long time.   I’ve never been more disappointed in a so-called “administrator” on this board.   For an administrator to immediately jump into “hypotheticals” , because they’re “welcomed on this board” is an egregious take after what the Belfry community has just experienced.    Guessing Belfry has spanked that ass over the years….and your true colors are showing.   I agree…..pure chicken sh**!!

Wish Coach nothing but the best!! I myself will continue to pray for the community, team, staff as they move forward. Bring another title to the mountains!
#24
I wish Belfry nothing but the best. The fact is, however, you can't replace a Phillip Haywood...you just can't. Johnson Central is not the same without Matney. Still good? Yes. But not the same. Belfry will still be good. May still win a title... but they will NOT be the same without Haywood. You can never be quite the same without those legends. Good luck , Pirates!!!

Best of luck to Coach Varney. Great hire imo. Matt and his family have been synonymous with Belfry football going back to the early sixties, maybe longer. Imo, he'll be very successful.

One of the first, if not the first all-state players from Belfry was a Varney.

Best man for the job!
