All time leading scorer now for Breathitt. Also became all time TD leader for the Bobcats this year too.
Sperry the best All time bobcat ever?
Over 2100 points and a record that has been held since the 70s

Broke old scoring record in basketball formally held by Lonnie Morris.
Also set high jump record at Breathitt at 6’2”.
Don’t know about the best but he’s been pretty good.

Hard to believe he broke WR records over the state championship teams and especially the Haddix teams. Very impressive! He’s a tremendous athlete.
Kid is a baller. Don’t matter the sport. Probably the best to play basketball at BHS in 30-40 years. Not sure before that. Good football player but there have been better football players for sure. He may be the best WR to come out off there.

I hope that Breathitt record book has an asterisk showing 5 seasons instead of 4 like the rest in the book.

I’m sure there are plenty of Bobcats on the basketball side who played more than four seasons. The COVID rules didn’t allow people to graduate any older than they would have originally. It just gave kids another chance to be a holdback. Football it’s definitely a thing because you only get four years, but also to Sperry’s credit (or detriment depending on how you look at it), I’d say he only played four full seasons of football.

This is a legitimate question and not an attack at all because I don't know if Sperry did the covid year or not.
But does the covid year count towards record totals and all-time records?

Sperry did repeat his freshman year because of covid rule and since he hadn’t held back previously his age allowed him to do so. According to KHSAA records he became Breathitt’s leading receiver a season or two ago but there was some local documentation on a former player with higher numbers that Austin passed this year. He played 4 seasons worth of football. Three full seasons and 6 games this year and 4 last I think.
But does the covid year count towards record totals and all-time records?
There weren’t any formal records for basketball and numbers were compiled by the local sports newspaper man through documents and interviews.
But none of these records mean a thing statewide, only locally.

Of course, it does.
If the games count, then points the players score count toward records.
And it's not a local decision. Games count. Points count.

Some of the most ridiculous, crybaby posts I've seen.
The cutoff date has been Aug. 1 for at least 30 years. I have no way of knowing, but there are probably players in the 14th Region playing this year who are older than Sperry, but no one is stalking them on here. I knew a player in our region who turned 20 on Aug. 2, but no one is questioning his career numbers, and they shouldn't. He played by the state rules, as did Sperry.

lmao I know y'all are never going to allow yourself to understand it, but you can't say he did his senior year twice because...
A.) He technically repeated his 9th grade year
and
B.) If he would have held back earlier he would the 8th grade year (where he scored 16 points) would have been his 7th grade year and he would have still been eligible to play and score those points.
I think the COVID year was a terrible idea and it was the legislature and KHSAA creating problems instead of solutions.
The baseball kids who didn't get to play their senior year it was a problem for them and for the boys and girls teams who didn't get to play basketball at Rupp.
Also for the esports kids who they shut down the season for even though they could have continued to play it remotely (still salty about that).
But the bottom line is it didn't create some magical year where 20 year olds can play with high school kids.

I probably should have clarified better on my statement as it’s taken off. Mine was more generated towards the football record being broken. I know you only get 4 years in football usually except for the kids that used the Covid year.

It definitely changes things for football players, but Sperry earned his numbers without even playing a full four years of football.
He missed four games in 2024, six in 2023, in 2020 Breathitt only played 5 regular season games because of COVID cancellations.
A lot of that's on him because of opting out of playing, but I think once you look at his body of work he stands at the top because he's the best WR from Breathitt and not because of the COVID year.

I was told Austin could have started school a year sooner than he did. I think this is where a lot of people get confused on him being a double hold back. The 9th grade is the only grade he’s repeated.(Covid year).
I’m hoping the newspaper man has tallied up all the numbers on these records. I know the records are broken no matter what but I think it would be interesting to see how many games , shots , catch attempts it took each person to set the record. Maybe even throw the strength of schedule in there.
Congratulations to Austin Sperry on a great Bobcat career !

Not sure I've seen a high school in Kentucky with that much information. You'd be lucky just to find just the total points, especially if you go back to the 1990s or earlier.
