Oh well, at least this Friday will be more enjoyable than last.I got a Raceland hoodie you can wear and I’ll pay for your ticket…..come stand beside me at KCD and root for the Rams

The Sayre defense really surprised me. I figured Anthony would be enough for Pikeville to force Sayre to come up with some sort of rabbit out of the hat plays to keep it close. But it was just the opposite. I think 35 may have been tackled more in one on one situations Friday night than he had the last two years put together. Still scratching my head on this one. Campbellsville better stay balanced on offense bc I think Sayre will try to take away the QB first and foremost. If they could neutralize Anthony…their defense is stout.

Sayre has some decent athletes at skill. They can play man on the outside and allow the rest to crowd the line and they’ll bring their safety downhill too. I actually think they will be able to stifle any rushing attack of Campbellsville with a similar game plan as Friday night against Pikeville. Sayre is small up front in several spots but those guys battle. Campbellsville QB is more dynamic and may be able to extend some drives with his legs but they better be able to throw it some or it will be a similar result.

I don't think Sayre even thought about worrying too much about Pikeville's passing game. Just worried about Pikeville's big back who is really good. Sayre's got some dudes. Know a couple of them. And, there is another Pennington waiting in the wings! Watched it online and just thought Sayre out-toughed them with a much smaller line. Coffman was playing on one ankle all night and balled out. And, thought Pikeville was very undisciplined with all the personal fouls and unsportsmanlike penalties. I am sure frustration set in, but that surprised me from a Pikeville team. But, like Boyle, I am sure P will just regroup and get back to work.

Pikeville has a little bit of a lull right now where the talent has dipped a little. You may also have some seeds of entitlement or complacency that comes with sustained winning, but I don't think that is the big problem.
With that said, Pikeville will be back. Just like the year they got upset by Paintsville in the playoffs this will be a wakeup call that helps point out where things need to be tweaked.... and with the talent coming back in.... they will be right back looking like a dominant force in no time. Pikeville may be vulnerable again next season... but by the time this incoming crop are Sophomores mixing with some good upper class talent... look out.
Belfry has experienced the same thing. It is hard to sustain a Championship pedigree every year in essentially a rural area. Pike County has a little more population, talent, and benefits than a lot of places so I say "essentially", but its not like Pikeville is pulling from a major metro area. Smaller school public programs will ebb and flow as the talent flows. You could see Belfry had some leaner talent years coming and it translated at the HS... then you saw Belfry would have a little spike and that has translated as well. Pikeville will be just fine.

05 pretty much nailed it. One more observation: The senior class of '23 season had several dudes. Everybody including me thought the Panthers would just "reload." But they really couldn't replace some of those dudes from the '23 team. Pikeville was loaded for Class A but they didn't "reload." Underestimated how great that class was.
Pikeville just didn't get it done this year but they always come back.

I went back and watched this one, Sayre went up and down the field all night as jet says. They only punted the ball one time. They did however had a couple turnovers on down but all were inside the 20. If Sayre cashes in on those then this game could have got out of hand. But Credit that Pikeville defense who played hard all night and forced those turnovers. Pikeville did get a little creative in the offense trying to find different ways to run the ball. I believe they only threw the ball 5-6 times. 2 of those were in the first half. Anthony got his yards, I’m not sure what he ended up with but I’m sure it’s over 120. 56 came on the one touchdown. But it seems Anthony got 3-7 yards on first down, and after that the Sayre defense tightened up. Sayre ended up with 265 yards of offense. 82 on the ground and 183 through the air.
We shall see what Sayre has this week against Campbellsville who can/will run and throw both.
Brock Coffman is a matchup night mare. But once u key on him then they hit someone else for a big play like Slaybaugh,Braxton, Parker, Evans, or Stuart. Sayre better get all they can out of these kids because not sure when a class like this will walk through them halls at Sayre again. Sayre is gonna take a step back next season. They lose to much not too.

Nope you don’t, but Sayre has only had 1 kid come in to my knowledge and that was the Braxton kid last year. I think the rest have been in there system/school.
But with this huge win over Pikeville things could pick up for Sayre. So we shall have to keep an eye on it.

The rise of Sayre reminds me of the rise of LCA back in the early 2000’s. I played when they first started their program and they were the team that you counted as a guaranteed win in your schedule. Almost over night they went from a team that was a doormat to a state power and never looked back. If that happens with Sayre is left to be seen but the parallels are there.

I don’t think it will last. Pennington won’t stay at Sayre. In fact he is rumored to be the next Marshall coach
Pikeville still had some great coaches this year, but just wanted to also mention they lost a great assistant coach last year in Coach Yogi Davis who is the head coach at Frankfort now. He was the D-line coach and special teams coordinator. The kids loved him and he was a pretty substantial loss for the program too. In my opinion. He did ALOT.

I'm not buying into Sayre is all that until I see how they do against Campbellsville even though C'ville has been underperforming lately. I think Raceland would handle Sayre.

Now that the season is over and Trevor Hoskins has officially resigned from his head coaching duties at Paintsville, Pikeville could pursue him to be their offensive coordinator.

Something nobody talked about so far is the schedule Pikeville played. Was it too much for them to handle. Not saying the kids weren’t tough enough physically but maybe mentally it took a toll on some of them. Idk…just another thought

Not in the way you would think. The team as a whole never lost confidence in my opinion. I actually began to worry something was off with this team when they lost to Corbin and JC the first 2 games, and there seemed to be no disappointment or concern. The only thing I kept hearing was "We should still win 1A, nobody in 1A is as good as Corbin or JC". The lack of disappointment from the team and those close to the program after losing those winnable games was a huge red flag to me.

^^^The way they lost. Didn't look like Pikeville in either game, especially JC game. Kept waiting for a statement win all year and it never came.
