Johnson Central vs Covington Catholic. Thoughts?

Might be the most compelling game in the state this week. For sure in 4A.

Pulling for Johnson Central.

These two programs have had some great battles over the past 2 decades. Hopefully, JC can get the W.

JC has had a great year. I had them beating Ashland but the same thing I said beginning of the season watching them is still true today. Their pass defense is simply bad and will knock them out of the playoffs at some point. This may be the week. CC will be able to do what they want and JC is one dimensional on offense although that one is really hard to stop. Ashland had some success slowing them down and if they get behind, they are stuck. CC by a whisker but I hope JC gets to continue their season.

Hope the Golden Eagles win but feel like Cov Cath will win a close one.

Cov Cath passing game gets them a lead a aa nd JC won’t have type of offense to catch up. Cov Cath by 14
11-10-2024, 03:11 PM
Be rooting for JC….and their offense will keep them in it for a while….but Cov Cath will prevail at home.

Let’s Go Central I will be rooting for you guys

Let's go JC!

One of the biggest games of the week, if not the biggest.
11-11-2024, 04:27 PM
I dont see either team stopping the other. But I didn’t think Ashland would shut down McCourt. If CC has a player like Jennings that can come up and hit McCourt every play and still make tackles like he did then JC will be in trouble. If not it will come down to who stumbles first and who has the ball last.

This one is a shoot out but I think JCs pass defense gets them beat.

I want to pick JC to win, but I’m afraid that pass defense, or lack there of, will be the deciding factor in this one. Hoping they’ve solved their issues in that department and they come out with the big W.

JC running game needs to control the clock. Ultimately though if that defense hasn’t gotten any better Cov cath will win

Interesting thing about this matchup is Cov Cath has not played a good team since September 20th and JC has played two good teams at end of their schedule but lost to both of them.
11-11-2024, 11:02 PM
Stack said it, JC has played the more challenging schedule as of late. They’ve been in a recent fight which will make the difference in this game.
I’ve got a cold and I just took a shot of NyQuil so I’m going to go ahead and say it, the battle tested Golden Eagles fly high in this one. It’s close but go ahead and charter the busses for next week.

The Colonels are always well-coached defensively and can usually play heavy run teams very well. McCourt is an animal and JC is extremely physical up front though. Covcath will do their best to stay ahead of sticks and run a balanced Power Spread with a good OL and QB Harney, RB Gaiser, etc… If CovCath gets up by two possessions, it could be tough for JC with their style of play. If JC keeps it tight, and does what they do well in running the football, taking TOP, and making Covcath play in a phone booth, then I think that advantage goes to JC. With that said, I think Cash Harney and Covcath’s skilled guys may be too much for the Eagles at home. I’ll say 24-14

Could be wrong but other than the first game of the season, JC has been super efficient on offense. Ashland held them one possession and that was due to a penalty. Corbin held once and got an INT. (Not sure why they were trying to pass at that point in the game anyway). CC is definitely dual threat so it will be up to the JC defense to step up if they want a third round game. If JC for some reason struggles on offense, will be a long night. Not working on a pass game may haunt JC in this one if CC can stop the run. It did last year.

I'd like to see JC win this and then get Boyle the next week and hopefully they can play a physical game against Boyle and hopefully wear them down some for the next week if Corbin gets past Ashland then maybe it could help Corbin out if they get a potentially beat up Boyle team coming out of that game. Corbin knows it well that win or lose JC will make you pay for it.

You’re probably right on the 14 points. Does seem low for a team as good as JC. They’re a tough, physical that is battle tested. I do think JC is going to have to move the ball through the air a little bit. Run games are big this time of year, but so is play-action off of the run game. This will be a dog fight!

It was early in season son it is a little foggy but Highlands ran the ball pretty effectively against Cov Cath. Now Highlands runs more on the outside than JC does, but they did have success up the middle. The more I think about this game I think JC may have enough success running the ball to keep it close if their pass D can play well.

This should be a heck of a second round match. I’ll take Covington at home.
