If I'm not mistaken, this was his fourth year and he has had plenty of time to put his footprint on the program. I get it, it's Magoffin, but I personally thought he would have more success at this point in his tenure. If you look at his tenure, his teams seemed to get worse as time went on. His first season he was 6-4, followed by two 4-6 seasons, and this year they missed the playoffs with a 2-8 record. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Magoffin will find a better person or a better football coach, but being honest, I don't see any big name programs hiring Derossett. I may be wrong, but I feel like John's best days are behind him.
There is a mistake on KHSAA, JD was only at Magoffin for 3. The 6-4 season Gamble was the head coach.
I'm curious if Gamble is interested in coming back. He was there three years (2019-2021) and had 11 wins. Gambles 2019 team had six wins. Which is the best season Magoffin has had in about ten years.  Gamble had big numbers and about all the talent in the building out playing. Secondly, do those six wins in 2021 count toward Coach Derossetts 200 career wins even though Chris Gamble was the coach in 2021?
Oh I’m sure he will be interested agai when his youngest boy gets to high school. He’s also one of those people that has that petition in his barber shop trying to get folks to sign it. I’d say his sight ls are set on coaching the middle school again right now since his boy will be in 7th grade next year. Idk if many of y’all know this or not, but DeRossett made Perkins the middle school coach this season. The middle school practiced with high school every day, NON CONTACT. Perkins tried to juggle his varsity duties and middle school. DeRossett eliminated having 10-11 dads on the sideline. You can see where I’m going with this….

Doesn’t amagoffin have some really good talent in the 8th grade this year? Seems like their better days lay ahead. Surprised to see this happening

I do have to level down my intellect sometimes based on the situation.  I can see your confusion.

Yes they did. They had a very good team last year too. So they got a good 8th grade class and freshmen class. Things could be solid for them in a year or so.

Got word that there will be a meeting this coming Sunday. Hopefully this all gets squared away and Coach DeRossett will still be the HC at Magoffin County.

I just wonder how much damage that petition has actually done?

I’m sure coach John will hear them out in this meeting, but if another school expresses interest, I’d be shocked if he stays at Magoffin. And they’ll be nobody else to thank than the ones trying to run him off.

Magoffin could hire Nick Saban tomorrow and they’d still not be very competitive. They are not the only school like that either. These schools just don’t have enough people who truly care to invest what it takes to win at a high level.

Not sure why DeRossett is going to meet with them Sunday, unless its to formally resign. After all, according to the experts on here, he's going to have his pick of jobs.

There’s only a few that really wanted him gone. The players, parents (majority), boosters and administration wants him here. If there are more than 10 names on that petition, it’s people that have nothing to do with or know anything about the football program.

Completely disagree. A great hire can turn programs around, MC has never tasted meaningful success in football. If they could ever hire a home run coach it would flip the culture of that community in terms of how they view football. Easier said than done, I get that.

Current PHS principal, Chester McCoy was building something at MC before he left. His son Scotty took over and continued building. MC win a district championship if I’m not mistaken in 2014? Once he left, the wheels fell off.

You say Magoffin hired the local barber to coach football when Scotty left? Why would they hire him? No clue who he is but was he some big standout that used to play or have prior coaching experience? I know they didn’t just let any ole farthead take over their program did they? What qualifications did he have to get that position

The barber wasn’t actually the next coach. A guy from Breathitt County was after McCoy. The barber was the middle school coach. They game him a chance after the guy from Breathitt went back to Breathitt.

Coach Derossett just posted on social media the upcoming strength and conditioning schedule for Magoffin Co along with a summer camp that they will be attending, so I am assuming he is staying.

Good news that it sounds like they've come to their senses and kept Coach D around in Salyersville. I'm sure he will not forget this experience and those involved with it though.

I’m on night shift and just woke up or I would have posted earlier. DeRossett ain’t going anywhere, which is what 98% of the people wanted.
