Jenkins dropping football again
#1
I see the Cavaliers forfeited the last five games due to a lack of players.
It seems like this is the third or fourth time that has happened, and now five teams have one less game to play when you only get 10. It's way past time to go to soccer or cross country.

They just need to consolidate with Letcher.
#3
Some games they’ve played in the last couple years weren’t even 11 on 11.

Other teams have gone independent as a chance to get some wins and improve the program, but Jenkins has never gotten any forward momentum. They’ve disbanded the program for a bit, gone independent, and the numbers just aren’t there.

Jenkins has some history and it would be nice to see them get something off the ground but it’s not looking good.

As far as consolidating with Letcher…
I don’t know much about their enrollment, but I wouldn’t hang the livelihood of the school on the football program’s success.

The schools/ADs still have time to find a new opponent. There are still teams in the region that don't have a full 10 game schedule, and calls have already been made.
#5
they should just allow jenkins students who want to play to play at letcher

monday makes 8 years since they won a game
#6
One less tiny sad school for 3A Morgan to play while avoiding competition!!! Sad day for mORGAN.

This or play a JV schedule for the year so kids still get to play football

You have to have 11 either way.
They've tried all of that, off and on, for years and it didn't work. They dropped out of district competition and it still doesn't work.

How far is Jenkins from the nearest high school? Are there schools closer to Jenkins than LCC?

Shelby Valley on the other side and Virginia, but I doubt any are closer than Letcher.
#11
Do the “athletes” districted for Jenkins already wind up at LCC OR SV or Pound?
#12
I think Pound closed.
I'm sure some go back and forth with Letcher. Jenkins has a pretty good boys basketball team this year, at least compared to the last 20 years or so.

That is correct. Pound and JJ Kelly combined to form Central High School in Norton, Virginia.

Jenkins High School to Letcher Central high school is about 11 miles apart. It's pretty much a straight shot on 119.

Jenkins High School to Shelby Valley is about 20 miles apart. It's pretty much a straight north on 23.

It's terrible when kids who want to play, can't .  Jenkins and Letcher are two different school districts, but surely something can be worked out so these kids at Jenkins can get to play.  I honestly hate that for them.

Dear school district admins,

Make it happen!

Who knows what the interest is but soccer seems like a really good option. It’s too difficult to try to keep re-building a football program scratch year after year. With soccer in EKY there are plenty of schools that are just picking up soccer and have just started teams in the last 2 years. Jenkins could be reasonably competitive with schools like Knott County, Pike County Central, Shelby Valley, Morgan County, etc.

Even with soccer, you've got to have 15 to 18 kids to make sure you've got 11 ready to play.
#18
Jenkins will be fine, I hear they will field a team next season.

I've been hearing that since the 80s. What makes you think it will be different next season?
Soccer makes more sense. I think it's easier to get numbers when no one is hitting you.

I don't think that's allowed by the KHSAA. The 5-10 kids who want to play could transfer, I guess.

I would say you are correct.
