He’s a good player but he wouldn’t change their record. Pikeville has some important players growing up and playing better each week. That will be huge for them when it matters. I do think their scheme has been questionable at times especially the Johnson Central game. That was a stinker. After watching a replay of the Raceland game, it wasn’t much better. Braxton had 3 long TDs in the second scrimmage and looked blazing fast. Now 5 touches in first 4 games. Stevens 2 touches first 4 games. Mind boggling. Those 2 would be like having 2 Boykinses on the field at the same time and would help open up the running game as well. I don't get it...

Also, do we find out if our QB Varney is better than the highly touted Duty?
One thing though, this isn't paper; this is a rivalry. One that is looked upon with not only county bragging rights, but with respect for both programs. Both sides will play with more heart than you'll normally expect.
I'll be watching with my cowbell ringing and with loud whistling for Pikeville, but I expect this game to be a classic - a classic with all players from both sides leaving it all on the field. A game where Pikeville hopes to send Belfry back 25 miles east, as though it'll last twice that distance. A game where Belfry hopes to bring a shovel and avenge 5 years of losses to bury it all on that P at the 50 yard line.
Either way, I can't wait to see this game.

Are they the two fastest Pikeville players?

^^^Anthony puts out a ton of energy on defense and is probably the best offensive player in the mountains.

I agree with saving him but tons of people all over HS football play both ways. Let playmakers get touches and make plays.

That’s all well and good til he’s out for the end of the season but that’s why I’m not the coach. Lol. I figured Pikeville had enough skill to save him some reps.

Panthers need to let Duty throw more period. Thought LCA might have been a turning point because they could have won that game but then they played Raceland. They have also had too many turnovers and 3 and outs. Defense is on the field too much every game. Won’t beat many teams with current formula.

It seemed to me that Pikeville was determined to run the ball. I’m not sure why with Anthony out. Play calling was very mundane except for the half back pass. Screens seemed to be all duty connected on.

all I hear on here they are saving Anthony and the should try to keep him healthy because these games won’t matter when it comes district and playoffs but what about the rest of the talent they have saving it too I think Hager had 1 touch in the Rams game and he took a screen to the house but hopefully the line play gets better or it don’t matter who has the ball in their hands but what really gets me is the effort these players put forth on the field sure some are doing their part but a lot is just out there for I don’t know what reason personally I have been really disappointed in this teams effort it’s just not there but it better change or they will be sitting at home watching the semifinals and final and I really think they could have a good team but right now to many just not doing their job to make the team work

I think the Pikeville offense needs to go back and watch the LCA game and try to learn from it. Pikeville threw it on early downs and threw it more often. Had big success passing and more running lanes. They also left some points out there. Panthers had 1st and goal at the 1 and didn’t score and another possession inside the LCA 10 and didn’t score. LCA had a scoop and score on a strip sack and 2 interceptions. LCA had zero turnovers and only won 40-26. Pikeville could have very easily won the game and LCA just beat CAL and played well against Boyle and Franklin County. Defensively, they have been on the field too long. Between offensive turnovers and not getting stops, the defense has been tired in some games. Pikeville isn’t far off.
Belfry has looked far more impressive than their record. Very easily could be 4-0. Offensive line is big and very good. Back to Belfry standards there and likely the best Pikeville has seen. They have ran well and thrown it way more than any Belfry team in recent memory and look good doing it. Make no mistake they are still going to run it and should but the pass gives opposing defenses something else to prepare for. Defensively, they are giving up too many points. Gotta clean that up but they have a lot of athletes that fly to the ball. Haywood doesn’t like playing offensive linemen on the D-line but maybe he should if they have the conditioning.
Still have Belfry winning and it could possibly get ugly if Pikeville plays like it did in the JC or Raceland games. It’s a rivalry game so shouldn’t be a lack of motivation on either side but haven’t seen enough from Pikeville’s offense or defense to be able to hang.

On defense, Pikeville will have to find a way to stop Woolum and Ace Caudill; a task that won't be easy. Varney can make one look silly second guessing who he hands it off to. On offense, Duty will have to pass more in order to spread out Belfry's defense.
IMO, special teams play will be more of a factor and turnovers will be created.
I will not expect Anthony to be running the ball in this game. Instead, I will expect Stevens and Justice to be the running duo. Stevens over Caudill running if Anthony doesn't? Maybe, because MacNamee may want to spice and surprise.
No vanilla in this one. It's going to be one helluva game, and I'll be eating a scrumptious chili dog each and every quarter while cheering for the panthers.

I gotta say there’s some really good points being made here in regards to Pikevilles use of personnel. I’ve sat on an opposing sideline from Pikeville for years and years now. Really focusing on the last couple, I used to sit and think, “damn…they just put coach us and put pace us in every aspect of the game”….
That being said. Anthony only being on the field offensively 3 plays and Pikeville essentially running the exact same offense with or without him on the field left me shaking my head. I went back and watched the ‘23 Title game and the ‘22 title game, as well as several other Pikeville games I could find online Pikevilles defense was really damn good, to damn near perfect in those games. But offensively, if you remove Birchfield and Anthony…they aren’t much different than Raceland or the other top teams in terms of what they put up in terms of numbers. Now, I would do the exact thing and use the hell out of those kids, not saying they are stupid for doing that or anything of the sort. But why you don’t call the game different is beyond me without your bell cow. It’s all over film that Raceland has struggled to defend the middle of the field in the passing game. Pikeville has the weapons to attack that. But yet they didn’t. Is Duty? For whatever reason do they not trust him? Seeing his numbers against LCA I thought they would come out throwing and throw it 30x last week. Are the receivers not up to the caliber they need? It just makes no sense because I know what Pikeville has and most would kill for that talent. But that talent just seems to be there for eye candy at this point.

As many times as you say it, it's still not true. That's like saying if you remove Lundy, Raceland would have had 20 passing yards the last 3 years. Nobody is going to buy that Pikeville has had all these great teams because they always have one more good player than the rest of Class A. It's nonsensical.

so what is the explanation of the game at Pikeville last year and the game this past Friday? What’s the difference in those two games and the title game last year? I’m really serious here. Not discrediting Pikevilles defense. Not discrediting that they have other athletes or play makers. It’s hard to deny that Anthony has been 80% of their offense.

For whatever reason Coach Mac plays pretty Vanilla on Offense in some games and Raceland always seems to be one of them. Doesn't make sense to me because Pikeville has so many Athletes that could really make that Offense hum up and down the Field in many different ways.

They don’t need Anthony at all on offense. But the defense is terrible without him. Yes Anthony can run the ball well but it’s more important they have him making stops.

Credit to him bc whatever percent he was vs Raceland, is better than most at 100%. That being said, he didn’t flow sideline to sideline like I’ve seen him do in the past. The Raceland game showed me that Pikeville needs him on that side of the ball just as much as they do on offense. If I were the Panthers, I would use him only when needed until he is back to 100%. Just seems injury prone right now. Personally idc what any Ram fan says, I want Pikeville at 100% should we see them again.
as for this week, I’m not sure they win with or without Anthony on the field. I would sit him and let him rest. The kid isn’t going to give any less than everything he has. To me the risk outweighs the reward with him out there right now. Rest the kid and work on expanding your offense. Bc Caudill is tough, but he is NOT #35.

I posted this in the raceland/Pikeville thread thought I’d bring it over to this one.
I went back and watched this one. Neither team really didn’t do anything fancy except for the trick play. Very Vanilla. Scores come from missed tackles, mental mistakes and turnovers.
Pikeville give Raceland two gifts and that set Raceland up for there scores. Waller being inserted brought a bit of a spark after that 4th down touchdown pass. Then he broke one with legs later to set up the 2nd score.
Two things I also noticed as well in this one is Pikeville looked very tired defensively in 4th especially Blake Caudill. I’m not sure how many kids they got going both ways but get that kid a a break.
The second I noticed its WR holds in games I’ve watched are all called differently each game and there isn’t nothing consistent about it.

I think we find out in this one that Chase Varney is the real deal and may show that he is the better QB in this game. Hoping the Pirates mix it up a little and let this young man shine.

Pikeville will fumble again and belfry will win. If they don’t i’ll eat TWO scrumptious chilli dogs EACH and EVERY quarter
