Really , really sad news today. Frank Selvy, one of the best basketball players , and maybe THE best , to ever come from eastern KY died today at the age of 91. People still talk about the night Frank scored 100 points in a game for Furman University in 1954. Frank led the nation in scoring twice while in college , averaging 41.7 ppg as a senior. He was the over #1 draft pick in the 1954 NBA draft. Frank went on to have a very nice NBA career. Frank was named a NBA All-Star twice during his nine- year NBA career. The last four and a half years he played for the Lakers, and was Jerry West's backcourt mate for the '62 NBA runner-up Lakers' team. Frank was considered one of the NBA's best shooters at the time he played, and averaged about 11 ppg for his career.
Frank was born in Corbin in 1932 and went on to become one of the most celebrated athletes to ever put on a Redhound uniform. I can't think of any player ever coming from the 13th region to have had more success in his basketball career than Franklin Delano Selvy. Frank was a kind and gentle man and will be sorely miss but forever remembers for the class act he was on and off the basketball court.
Rest well, Mr. Selvy. You lived well.
Here's a clip of Frank being introduced on the Ed Sullivan Show, as part of the 1954 All-American team.

Great thread OSH. I heard about this today while I was out and was 90% sure he was from Corbin. A legend.
