Prestonsburg 2024
(08-06-2024, 03:31 PM)Blackcat 4 Life Wrote: Hager seems like a great guy and he seems to be trying to do the right things within the program and the community. I didn't know it until a couple of days ago that Brewer didn't involve the feeder programs to attend media day last year. You talk about a program killer! I was happy to hear that Hager allowed all elementary programs to participate this year. I heard he attended the Allen Eagle throwback game and was very impressed with the turnout. These little things go a long way when trying to build a program, and the kids and parents see this and want to be a part of it.

As for this year, Hager is going to have his hands full. He has the skill players to compete, but the inexperience and overall talent up front will be a major concern. I would be very surprised if they finish the year at .500. With all of that coming into play, we still can't judge him off of one year, especially when he has been dealt a bad hand in regards to transfers, and kids leaving which was beyond his control. Prestonsburg has a solid freshman and sophomore class, and with the talent coming up from the middle school the future is bright. The key as I have heard a lot of people around town talking about is keeping all of the talent in Prestonsburg. We all know, the talent has always been here, it's just been hard keeping it over the last ten years or so. Hail Blackcats!
Hopefully there’s some linemen coming up!! That’s the best coaching group on his staff but they don’t have a talented group to develop right now. Until that is resolved there won’t be many wins in Pburg.

It’s going to be a rough road. Brewer is probably a better football coach but Wesley may prove to be a better program builder. I worry about the football knowledge on the staff that he has built but if he can develop or upgrade his coaching staff things may trend in the right direction with enough time.

Prestonsburg has had the longest drought in talent it’s seen in a very long time. Thats the real issue. As the population has decreased the talent pool has too. It’s not a very attractive destination for transfers or coaches at the current time.
Yes, the line is a concern I think everyone is aware of. It’s no fault to the kids out there attempting to play out of position they’d normally might play or play as a 14/15 year old freshman. It’s the hand that was dealt to coach Hager and he’s not complaining. The boys are working hard and the coaches are doing their best to make this work, because like mentioned above, the skill talent is there. If those guys get a hole or can get outside in space Prestonsburg is gonna be dangerous. I believe the defense is going to surprise some folks. I hope teams decide to elect to kick it deep to Elliott, Harris and Patton also. Special teams could win Pburg a game this season, that’s how fast these guys are.

I’m happy with how everything is going. There’s over 40 players on the roster, media day was awesome, Blackcat Madness was great, 7v7 went great, camp was good, now the pads are on and scrimmages are upon us. We’re gonna see how a successful spring and camp translates. I’m excited and I hope this bunch can prove many wrong. It all starts at Leslie County and that should be a great game like last season. Vibes are great around the program and Blackcat football is on the rise.

First scrimmage is Friday at East Carter with them, Johnson Central & Powell Co. Scrimmage at Shelby Valley on the 17th.

Gosh, who agreed to that scrimmage…that’s a great way to end a rebuild before it gets started
The line situation only got worse with the injury to Adams. I heard he was on crutches, but I don't know the severity. If it isn't something major, I wouldn't rush him back, especially with him being their best and most experienced lineman. Like I've said in the past, I hope "the powers to be" will give Hager a fair shake, and not judge him based off of one season. Hail Blackcats!

News I heard was at best Daniel is back by district play. I hate that for him because he’s a great kid.
Let me hurt this straight. Brewer couldn’t get kids out, couldn’t sniff a district title and lost to Betsy Layne 21-7 the last game he coached. Betsy a Layne gets absolute destroyed the following week at Martin County but Brewer wasn’t the problem. It was the stakeholders? Maybe. Sounds a lil far fetched and like excuses to me. But I’m no insider over there.
How did the Blackcats look last night?

They had their ups and downs, but overall it was definitely a positive night for Prestonsburg. Played their best ball of the night against East Carter. Which should be a top 10 3A team. Scored 3 times on them in 10 mins running clock format.

Prestonsburg has big play capabilities as they showcased that against each team last night. Finally got some good film for coaches to breakdown and go over with the boys also. Very happy with last nights performance.

To no surprise JC was the best team there. They were physical and they didn’t make many mistakes. Well run program that knows their identity. East Carter had probably the best player on the field though in #61. Kid was a monster last night. Their back #20 is a bruiser as well. Powell County played with great energy all night. Ran a uptempo spread offense. They’ll be better than they were last season for sure.

Schedule should look about the same as last season:

@ Leslie Co
East Ridge (Pike Co Bowl at Pikeville) ???
Paintsville
@ Lewis Co
Pike Co Central
Betsy Layne
Martin Co
Floyd Central
@ Knott Central
@ Breathitt Co

Key Losses: RB Jacob Rose, OL/DL Josh Elkins, DL Nick Adams

Key Returners: WR/DB Dalton Elliott, WR/DB Alex Harris, OL/DL Cole Laferty, LB Logan Stumbo

Players to keep an eye on: Westin Harris, QB Bryce Holbrook, WR/DB Kain Patton, RB/LB Colin Hatfield, TE/LB Baron Craft, OL/DL Daniel Adams, DL Noah Price, LB Tyler Stephens, HB/DB Drake Hatfield, QB/TE/LB Brady Allen

Should have 15 or so incoming freshman. I expect to see some freshman play varsity minutes next season. Have some studs coming up.

Dalton Elliott has nearly 2000 yards of offense and 27 touchdowns under his belt as a Blackcat. He's been killing it at indoor track meets as well. He's going to be one of the fastest players in the region next season.

Coach Wes Hager will have a athletic team with playmakers to work with in year one. I think they're capable of winning the district, but Martin County will be the preseason favorite. I'm not sure on who might transfer in. I've heard some names, but we will see over the next few months.

Hager has already hit the ground running and I'm excited to see what he and this new staff can do with the program.

Go Blackcats!!!
Didn’t Martin County graduate a lot?

Are y’all expecting a bunch of transfers in with this hire? Things ain’t like they used to be. People actually have to physically move to be eligible now.
bet you believe in the tooth fairy too!
No, but I’d be willing to bet that if a bunch of kids from Martin County follow Hager to Prestonsburg, they won’t be eligible unless they move to Floyd County.
We’ve seen quite a few get eligible without moving.

Tune in later to find out...
There’s not much positive to say when the head coach is taking vacation time and robbing the youth of our town of valuable practice time.

It’s a shame for the kids this is the best we could do. There’s legitimate talent at the skill positions
It's not a big deal.

Prestonsburg still had practice Monday-Thursday. They lift weights, conditioned, and then they split up and linemen did linemen drills and skill guys done skill drills. Same thing they've basically been doing all spring/summer thus far. No beat was missed.
It’s a big deal. The head coach should be at every thing baring a family emergency.

Shows a lack of leadership and maturity.

i really appreciate that you feel like you have to defend the program on here like this but ignoring red flags isn’t going to help the program out.
How ANYONE can see the amount of work that Coach Hager has already put into this program and still try to shine a negative light and question his dedication and commitment to Prestonsburg’s program is just crazy.

Better look in the mirror.
Would you leave your kid in a toxic environment just because that’s your hometown?

it’s not just about winning and losing football games, this town and the athletics associated with it, is extremely toxic. There’s a handful of people who are football dumb but think they know everything and they want to manipulate and twist it so their children are the “stars” when they’re less talented than the teammates that are losing playing time to them.
I’ve noticed you account is relatively new. You’ve said things like “toxic program”. We must be watching two totally different programs. I’ve seen nothing “toxic” in Prestonsburg football program. Great kids with unbelievable team chemistry from freshmen to seniors. It’s clear someone has found a few sour apples in their basket but I think it’d be best to give the new HC at least until week 1 before you start calling for their job! lol
It takes more than 5 years to build a PROGRAM

Prestonsburg already has a "program" and has for decades. Once people have confidence in the system again it will improve quickly.
As bad as it got they aren't starting from scratch.

It’s pretty close to scratch. Only legit talent at 2-3 positions. Looked great against Powell and ECs JVs in the scrimmage though.

Trolling effort must increase to fend off belief that Prestonsburg is possibly better than expected

The only thing that's "obvious" is your hate for this team, coaching staff, and program.

You're not concerned and you're definitely no Blackcat.

You're a troll.
