Clay County 2024
#2
Clay co......sigh....
#3
Big losses for this team to graduation will make for a long season. Unless they switch up offense style or have a stud transfer in or step up, finding wins and replacing Rice this year will be tough times.
#4
Sizemore assembles good offenses from year to year. Thats one thing I will give him credit for. No matter who graduates, he finds a way to plug the hole.

Not a huge issue with Clay playing decent Class A programs like Hazard, Williamsburg, or Middlesboro, but they're not doing themselves any favors keeping the Harlan, Pineville, and Lynn Camp's on the schedule on a consistent basis.

Clay went through some years to where they played 5A teams on a yearly basis and then 4A teams and was with a new coach every other year. I like them in 3A. They play in a district that is winnable. Good games and evenly matched. I’m glad they are winning games. Some programs are built for December. Some are not.

No clue how long the current coach has been there but I think Clay went through like 6 or 7 coaches in 5 years, with one resignign and taking a new job like as the season was about to start. You dont bounce back from a 10 years of turmoil, I do believe things are on the rise in Tigertown, time will tell.

Sizemore has done a good job of simply making Clay watchable in recent years. I would like to see them add some 2A or even average 3A teams just mix it up from the 1A lower teams. Like someone said above, Williamsburg and Hazard are historically solid programs. The Tigers have some talent that many may be over looking. Unfortunately, they have a huge question mark at the spot that you would love to avoid that with. I don’t think a lot of people realize how many kids Clay has playing at another school that would’ve made them a district title contender last year and through 2025. But you have to give it to the kids that are there putting in the work for their school and community.

Do their better athletes play only BKBL or BSBL like it has been ? Are they being discouraged from playing FB ?

Not sure but they’ve got enough kids playing 20 minutes down the road that would move them into the district title hunt over night.

Coach Sizemore can coach some ball. He has won every where he has been. And he has been at some bad jobs.

Sounds like they have a lot of kids at North. How many Robert's and Fultzs are still there ?

Several and then another combo of brothers and several other kids as well. At one point last year there were 8-9 and several started. Would’ve loved to have seen them play for the Tigers after middle school or longer. Clay would’ve been right on Bell’s heals.

Until they build a defense it’s all just smoke and mirrors.

Does Sizemore coach/call the defense? Do they have a DC ?

Not sure, but I do know from going back and looking that they have improved every single year defensively the last several years in a row and the 2019 team looks like it was at the very top of PPG average defensively of any Clay team in nearly 25-30 years.

You also have to take into account the amount of points scored on offense and the way Clay has thrown the ball has put their defense on the field more than most teams. Along with the fact that they sub as soon as games are out of hand in their favor so that skews the average a bit.

Bell county was substituting freshman in halfway through the third quarter last year in a rain game. I don’t think it was going to matter. Gotta worry about getting over the hump with knox and rock first so the first round playoff game isn’t in pond creek.

Doesn’t Bell’s heals insinuate that they would still be better? But there will be 3-4 kids start for NL that I would bet would make Clay better than Knox and Rock over night. Which was my original point. You factor in 5A vs. 3A and last year there were 6 kids on North’s roster that would’ve started for Clay (about 8-9 overall). The school they were at 1 year earlier.

Bell will always be tuff as long as Dudley is coaching. From what I am hearing, Clay is working on a very good QB in the making. I watched some North games last year. No doubt, lots of talent that I had no ideal was on the team from Clay. Very good athletes. Would make any team better.

Sizemore gets it done wherever he is! Hazard should have taken a blank check to Manchester and got him.

Everything I said was true. Part of mass exodus (for various reasons) during and after Covid that is rarely referenced. It is what it is but it’s also true. There are a lot of kids on NL that played for Clay through middle and even early high school that would have changed CC overnight. Meaningless now but still a point to make.
