Perry County Central 62 Breathitt County 55 (14th Region Championship)
#1
Final from Powell County High School.

Shannon Hoskins' Commodores avenge last season's loss to the Bobcats and move on to face the winner of the 15th in Rupp.

PCC jumped out to a big lead early in the third and it looked like Breathitt had weathered the storm, but the 'Dores were able to push it back out. They led 57-50 with 39 seconds left before a pair of Bobcat free throws. Breathitt extended the game and cut into the lead, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Give us feed back on how PCC won. Did they throttle Sperry and Breathitt’s supporting cast could not carry the day?

How did rebounding and turnover stats look?
#3
So much for Perry getting embarrassed. Absolutely thrilled with the outcome. Good luck Dores!

Honeycutt is out of league. Shannon absolutely took Breathitt out of everything they wanted to do. Hats off the Perry great win.

Perry Central used their speed.
It looked like they were faster at several positions. They made Breathitt guard them on the perimeter, spread it out and attacked the rim early. They pushed the ball in the open floor and got to the rim consistently. They shot the ball well from behind the arc and hit their free throws.

Tyson Neace guarded Sperry and frustrated him all night but he still did pretty well. Perry weathered an early storm from Breathitt. They were down 9-1 early but answered. I don’t think they trailed again after they took the lead in the second quarter.

Breathitt got their bell rung and just never could get back into it aside for a couple runs here and there.

The bottom line is the players decide it on the court and this was just Perry’s night.

Congratulations Perry County Central

I would not be surprised to see these two in this same situation again next season. They both return bulk if they’re teams.
#10
Breathitt is wishing right about now that they had John Noble back. The best and only coach to coach at Breathitt and got done dirty.
#11
Perry was much more skilled in all 5 spots. Other than Sperrys of course

Honeycutt in one season has double the regional tourney wins than noble did his entire tenure at breathitt. You got your wish tho breathitt appeared they overlooked pcc. Pcc defense was in breathitts grill tight and they spread the floor on offense and had good movement from players without the ball. Shannon did a great job with a team everyone thought had no chance earlier in the year. Congrats Perry. Breathitt returns bulk of their starters next year I’m think stallard, Collins and Honeycutt can mature and fill those spots and be better.

Breathitt made it easy for Perry tonight. The offense was a circus show and Shannon sit back and watched Breathitt play right into his hands. Selfish play results in season over every time. Congratulations on blowing a golden opportunity, the best team lost tonight

I thought rebounding would be our problem. But dang , castle and slone out played Breathitt bigs so bad and that was the difference tonight. Did not see that coming Huge 3rd Quarter for Perry

PCC - Breathitt
Q1- 8 - 9
Q2- 10 - 8
Q3- 23 - 11
Q4- 21 - 27
Tot- 62 - 55

Breathitt led by 1 at the end of Q1 and trailed by 1, 18-17 at the half. Third quarter was the biggest story of the game. PCC dropped 23 and pushed their lead to 13. By the start of the 4th, Sperry had three personals and would get a technical within the first two minutes of the 4th; by my count, he finished with 26 & 22 of those came in the 2nd.

The Bobcats were able to cut it down to nine at the 4:00 mark in the 4th and would cut it to 6 a couple of times and 5 once within the last minute and a half. PCC had some missed free throws, turnovers, and fouls that weren't called for from the bench (when they'd have been telling them not to foul) that helped Breathitt out late.

PCC had 44 of their 62 and Breathitt County had 38 of their 55 in the 2nd half and much of that could have been attributed to the game getting extended by strategic fouls. Overall, it was a 62-55 regional final, so it wasn't always the prettiest. Pretty doesn't matter though, and I'm sure the Commodores are happy to be going to Rupp.

Call me crazy but I don’t remember a technical on Sperry.
He got called for a really hard personal foul on Slone but I don’t remember a tech.

I'd thought I heard the announcers saying that when a teammate had come over and covered his mouth after he'd said something in the direction of a ref.

Probably my mistake on that one.

Coach Hoskins executed his game plan perfectly. Amazing what a hard working/listening/coachable group of gym rats can accomplish. Kids put in a lot of work and done more than the bare minimum like most athletes do around here. Good to see those kids hadn’t checked out like a lot of kids do and wanted to play another week. Great Job Dores.

Anyone watching this game could plainly see Sperry and Honeycutt was dumbfounded when Perry came out man to man. They spent hours working on the zone (Out coached) Perry completely took the bigs out no layups when guards penetrated (Out coached) Honeycutt had NO game play at all and in showed. Just plain and simple out coached bad. Honeycutt and the whole gym could see the selfishness of his players and done nothing all year to stop it (No coaching)

Bellamy and Hamilton are great players and will be hard to replace that easy

Breathitt came out and punched Perry in the mouth and when Perry punched back, the Bobcats had no answer. Perry was left for dead, and for them to be regional champs is something of a story book ending. You've got to give the players and coaches credit for never giving up, because a lot of teams would have folded. As far as Breathitt, they had a good year, and I personally didn't think they would be where they are at today, with all of the loses from last year. Honeycutt did well with this team, and they have a good chance to be back next year. Gross needs to be utilized more with his back to the basket, and he is too skilled not to get more touches. Not taking anything away from Perry, but Sperry didn't look healthy to me in the regional tournament. He didn't have the same explosiveness or lift that we are used to seeing. As someone mentioned earlier, I believe Breathitt will be a lot better next year, if a couple of kids take the next step forward.

Congratulations to PCC. A case of over confidence by BHS after the win against HaZard.

I wouldn’t say great but good players is the adjective I’d use. They weren’t very consistent and at times they did nothing. However at times they would shine and that’s when all breathitt countians would book their rooms at Lexington. The regional finals they didn’t play good at all and that’s why I wouldn’t characterize them as great. Great players step up when it’s time and good players cant. They both were hold back seniors with some age and they played like hold back mediocre seniors. Collins, stallord, honeycut work hard, hit the weights and get in shape can easily fill their shoes in a years time.

Breathitt will be leaps and bounds better next year wait and see

Breathitt lost their 2 best defenders on a team that was handicapped defensively to begin with. Plus with the departure of those 2 seniors they lose 20+ points in production. Without some outside help there is no way Breathitt will be better next year. Sperry didn’t have any trouble lifting off in warmups. Use that as an excuse if you want but he just played a bad game plain and simple. If Honeycutt wants Breathitt’s offense to be “give the ball to Sperry and everyone else get out of the way” then he needs to tell the bigs to quit clogging up the middle so Sperry can get to the rim

Sperry needs to go test the waters and go play at a prep school for a year. He has nothing more to prove in this region. If he’s wanting to be a good college player, he needs to leave and go work hard for a year. Felt like to many others were jacking up shots for Breathitt. Sperry should had about 35/40 attempts. When you’re that much better than your team mates, that’s what you do. But anyway, Breathitt has a good team this year considering they lost the 4 Horseman from last year.

This thread is awfully quiet.
I figure folks would have a lot to say about this one.

Not a lot to say really. Perry outplayed Breathitt this game. There’s no animosity between these two that I know of. Shannon has a lot of friends from his time at Breathitt and I think most people wish Perry the best. Add to that many Breathitt fans felt like the team probably exceeded expectations for the year. Beating Hazard out of regional  play two years straight and 2 out of 3 years in All A probably gets more actionSmile
