Kentucky Basketball: How Much Does it Really Matter?
#1
Matt Jones ,  of  KSR, mentioned this at the end of his post-game call-in show yesterday. He closed by talking about whether UK basketball is really that important in the grand scheme of things. He told one caller not to let anyone tell him that it wasn't important or that it didn't matter. Matt said that , while basketball is just a game, it is a big part of our cultural landscape in KY and, while we need to keep it in perspective, it is still important. I say, phooey!!!

How do you all feel about this?  Is KY basketball really important to you?  I think I disagree more than I agree with Jones on this issue.  When I was younger, I lived and died with each big win or loss. As I've grown older, I really have gained the perspective of " it  is just a game."  I do think most of the players want to win and a loss stings for about  15 minutes and then they are on to counting their NIL money and looking forward to their big check in the League. Most players care WAAAAAY less than a lot of the hardcore fans do. Don't get me wrong , I like watching the games aand rooting the team on and I had fun doing so this year. In fact, look at who posted the most on here about UK basketball this season. But, at the end of the day, it's really just not all that important. It really isn't. At least that's my perspective. For many in this state, UK basketball is truly a religion and , if anything, more religion is certainly not something we need.

Do you agree with Jones that UK basketball is a big part of the fabric of our culture and, while some go way overboard in their worship of Big Blue , it is important and does matter?  Or do you agree with me that, while it's fun to follow the games and root the team on , at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter?

As long as Calipari continues to coach UK, my interest in college basketball will remain at a very low level. While Kentucky was losing to mighty Kansas State, I was watching the championship round of the Onix Austin Showdown Professional Pickleball Tournament. I was not expecting UK to survive the weekend, so I decided not to shell out the money to subscribe to CBS for a month to watch one or two UK games. YouTube is free and pickleball players still play mostly for the love of the game. There are no $10 million/year coaches in the sport either.

In other words, UK basketball, as played under the direction of John Calipari, has taken a backseat to pickleball in my list of entertainment preferences. I did check the score of the UK game periodically through one of my Amazon devices, but I am glad that i did not watch another UK trainwreck.

The #1 seeds swept all of the titles. Men's #1 seed, 24-year old Ben Johns, won the men's singles, he and his brother won the men's doubles. 16-year old #1 women's seed, Ann Leigh Waters, won the women's singles and women's doubles titles. The #1 seeded mixed doubles team of Ben Waters and Anna Leigh Waters won the title. Johns and Waters both avenged recent losses in the singles finals.

It's interesting that you mentioned pickleball. When I got my hair cut last week, the stylist started talking about pickleball and how fun it was. I told him I wasn't very familiar with it at all but that it sounded like fun. I told him I was gonna check it out. Have you ever played, Hoot?

Growing up UK basketball was extremely important to me. I watched every game I could. The 92 team was the peak of my fandom. Once I got married and started having kids UK basketball became less important to me. As my kids got older and my life got busier, watching UK became less of a priority. When Calipari was hired in 2009 started falling out of love with UK. I absolutely did not want Calipari to come to Kentucky (my dislike for Calipari goes back to his days at UMASS). The Providence game was the first game this season that watched more than a couple of minutes this year. Many times I never knew they had a game until someone posted it on Facebook. Maybe this will change when Calipari leaves Kentucky.

I've never played. I became curious about pickleball after watching an episode of the Lehto's Law YouTube channel. The story was about people suing an HOA because they opened up some pickleball courts near some residents' condos. The dispute was over the noise of people hitting the pickleballs. It was hard for me to believe that the sport could be noisy enough to generate legitimate complaints, so I searched YouTube and started watching some games. The ball makes a sound similar to a ping-pong ball, except louder but I don't think it would bother me to live near a court.

I am currently not in shape to take up pickleball but eventually, I hope to give it a try. I loved racquetball when I was younger. Like racquetball, pickleball looks like it would be easy to learn well enough to enjoy playing it, but difficult to master. The game is like a cross between tennis and ping-pong, with some similarities to racquetball thrown in. Like racquetball and ping-pong, the pickleball rackets have much shorter handles and smaller heads than tennis rackets and you don't have to hold your wrist stiff - which always gave me problems when I tried tennis and golf. Baseball was my primary sport and keeping my wrists stiff just never felt right to me.

Another thing that appeals to me about pickleball is that most of the players, including at the pro level, have other jobs or are students. It is a rapidly growing sport and the top players probably make enough money to cover their travel expenses and many of them also have some endorsement deals, but nobody is getting rich playing the sport. Most of the players seem to get along well and opposing players make most of the calls when the ball hits near the lines. (There is also a video appeal system, where the appealing player/team loses a timeout if they lose the appeal.)

Pickleball looks like it would be a lot of fun to play and I enjoy watching it. Tickets to the Austin tournament were $50 for center court to watch the championship matches, but that covers several hours of matches. The closest upcoming pro tournament to my home is in Charlotte, North Carolina. There is also a tournament scheduled in Cincinnati in September.

I still enjoy watching the games. Just not s much as I did when I was 20. This season had some fun moments, especially when they were given up for dead after the SC and GA games. Cal did a pretty good job the last 6 or 8 weeks.  I can't help but feel something just wasn't right this season. It seems to go back to Wheeler. Matt Jones said he was told by a reliable source back in January that Wheeler had quit the team and would not play again. Contrary to what we were told about Wheeler being likely to play in the NCAA, it never happened. I don't think we ever got the true story and maybe never will, much like the Shaedon Sharpe situation last season. Just really weird. Just seemed to be some chemistry issues this season. The team did a pretty good job overcoming the mystery cancer but 2-22 shooting by two of your best players will doom a marginally good team every time. At least we outlasted Duke , UNC , and Kansas.  Some consolation, I guess.

As I mentioned before, I like watching the games and I had fun doing it this season but I just don't see UK basketball as being all that important in the grand scheme of things. I kinda feel bad for those who are devastated by UK tourney losses.

I feel bad for Oscar. I doubt that i will remember any of the other players' names in a couple of years. I have to admit that John Calipari was ahead of his time with the one-and-dones, but that is not a good thing, IMO. I don't like the proliferation of transfers and the high number of early NBA draftees but that does not seem to be a trend that is ever going away.

The Austin tournament is on YouTube and the coverage was pretty good. All of the finals were held on Sunday, so those matches would give you a great intro to pickleball. The first two games of the women's finals between Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau were classics. Singles matches are usually the best of three games to 11 (by 2) and doubles are best of five. You can only score on your serve.

It stopped mattering as much for me when they started kneeling and trying to make political statements!!
This goes for all sports and teams I followed!!
I went over a year of not watching any college or pro sports because of it. Stopped doing fantasy football, which I really enjoyed. Needless to say it was a huge adjustment for me to stop watching and following sports. If someone would have told me I would have went a weekend without watching sports, I would have told them they were nuts!! But I did it and filled my time with other things. Doing this put sports back into perspective when I started watching again and caused me to place a lot less importance on wins and losses!!

Maybe look into a digital antenna and watch a lot of channels for free. I got one off of Amazon, I am able to watch about 18 different channels where I live.
All three major networks in my area each have about 3-4 other channels besides the normal broadcast channel you can watch.

Just a thought!

The bolded kinda hit me in the feels. From '92 to '98, things were great, even though they were very not great just a few years before.

As I've gotten older, the games do seem as though they don't mean as much and I find myself skipping or being indifferent to them more frequently. Part of that is undoubtedly due to the prominence of AAU, the influence of shoe companies, conference expansion, one and dones, transfers, or NIL money, but I think that overexposure and market saturation are just as much to blame. It used to be a much bigger deal to play in an event like The Derby Classic, which is much more affordable to the average fan than the McDonald's All American game or Jordan Brand Classic. I can remember sitting up in the middle of the night to watch tape delayed regular season games on Jefferson Pilot, but now I start most games that I'm able to watch late via a streaming subscription and time it so that I can skip through the commercials and still catch the last five minutes of the game live so I don't risk spoiling it on social media or sports news sites.

I do appreciate what Calipari has been able to do, but I think that barring a very strong finish to next season, it could be his last. Whether it gets better or worse after is anyone's guess, but I have a feeling that things will ebb and flow as the next coach's honeymoon phase ends, past successes become more distant, and the speculation about who'll take over next heats up.

Maybe look into a digital antenna and watch a lot of channels for free. I got one off of Amazon, I am able to watch about 18 different channels where I live.
All three major networks in my area each have about 3-4 other channels besides the normal broadcast channel you can watch.

Just a thought!
I have plenty of viewing options I just don't watch much "alphabet" network TV any more. We have a Sling TV subscription and the fastest internet connection available but I watch more YoueTube than TV. Last season, I subscribed to CBS, Sling, and the SEC Network to give myself as much opportunity to watch UK basketball as possible, but I didn't actually watch many games. Calipari has just about killed my interest in college basketball. This season, I just decided not to pay any extra to watch the 'Cats.

This exactly how I feel about UK basketball. I remember listening to UK games as a little boy with my dad on WHAS when we lived near Columbus, Ohio. I have fond memories of listening to games featuring Issel, Pratt, Parker, Jimmy Dan Conner, and many others. UK basketball just isn't what it used to be.

First Cal was a great coach, now it's he's a good guy and we should be thankful to have him and basketball isn't really important anyway.

He has a track record of being a VERY winning coach. Does appear to be a very nice man.  I agree that , in the grand scheme of things, basketball isn't exactly all that important.

By the way, if Cal paid a visit to your home or school, you would slobber all over him like he was your favorite rock star. LOL

On here , maybe.  But most UK fans(I'd say, 75-80%) support their HOF coach and are looking forward to net season's fun for #9.

It’s our heritage and gives us a sense of pride outside of the horsing industry. We are put on the map for certain things and this is one of them. Good or bad it’s still important to our state and culture. Of course it’s not important to others and many but for those ones that want to talk about it in a negative way on a consistent basis probably aren’t very happy about things to begin with. Teaching kids to hope, dream, work, have honor, sacrifice, know discipline, reach goals, etc. are many of the attributes I feel are important that Kentucky Basketball can bring. So yea I’m my house it’s important. Maybe those things we teach will transpire to careers one day kids will hopefully enjoy! So many couch coaches these days lol

If basketball isn't important, fire Cal and save $10MM a year of taxpayer money. Cal doesn't have a winning record anymore, If you went to Keeneland you wouldn't bet a dollar on a horse with one win in 4 years. If Cal came to Pikeville I would be respectful but politely tell him I don't recognize the UK program I have loved and followed all my life.

I don't slobber all over anyone. You are the guy on here who can't think for himself and has your opinions assigned to you.

Wrong as always. If you think Cal has an 80% job approval rating you are even dumber than you come across on here. And again you look idiotic repeating the HOF crap over and over. Non-HOF coaches are eating Cal's lunch on a daily basis.

Cal's not listening to you. He even says he's not listening to fans like you.  He's too busy adding to his win total(what is it, going on 900 now?) and his enormous bank account. Oh, and let's not forget the hundreds of young men he has helped become millionaires. HOF coach , businessman, and citizen. Plus, he's not afraid to think critically(he's a Libby). I look for #9 next season !!!!

If Calipari were on the federal payroll, then he would be far and away the most highly paid federal employee and Anthony Fauci would be the second highest paid federal employee. That sentence summarizes, in a nutshell, just how screwed up both our federal government and the University of Kentucky's men's basketball program are. What a country we have - where even an incompetent basketball coach can earn $10 million a year for life. It's hard to imagine how much a great basketball coach could make at UK.

Love it!!!    Cal said he wants half of the All-Star roster to be former Cats.  Could very well happen in the near future. Cal represents our university very well. I love how he supports his players.

I enjoy watching and rooting on UK basketball but , as I've said before, it's not very important. I can think of a thousand things that are far more important. I watch a young guy like Jack Pilgrim, whose joys and sorrows in life seem to be so tied to KY basketball and I think, Jack, oh boy, one day I hope you realize that it's just a damn game. Let it go, son. When Corbin lost to Boyle, I was disappointed(because we were the better team... lol) but I slept like a baby that night. Same when UK lost to, who was it, St. Peters? I slept fine. When I was around Jack's age, I cried when the Bengals lost the Superbowl game. Sports is fun. It's a nice diversion from all of life's worries but it's not really that important when you think about it.
