Shelby Valley Coach

Let’s hear the rumors!

What’s taking them so long?

I’m hearing seniors may not play and at least 3 possible transfers because the administration is really dropping the ball with hiring.

Besides Newsome from BL and the Coach at Jenkins, I’ve really not heard about any other candidates.  Summer ball will be starting soon and some programs are already working out.  I don’t have any idea what’s taking them this long.

The Greg Napier Administration continues to show ineptitude. Hard to believe how much he's sent things downhill and how quickly it has happened.
#4
Newsome is returning to BL. Keep hearing an insider already has the SV job.
#5
Job was Newsomes, but the pushback from parents and players made Napier change course. Fields the hire supposedly.

Sucks for BL, but good for SV.

Who is Fields?  Also how does it suck for BL if their coach is returning?  Is there an issue with him at BL?

He ran a lot of talent off. He’s a good basketball coach, above average for the 15th, but he is a terrible people person.

He’s not good enough of a coach to be the non-people person he is.

Hearing Pike Central’s coach.

It’s hard to see anything the administration does that is in the best interest of the school, community, or students. He likes the attention.

I’ve been hearing it’s a done deal. Just trying to work out the details of the hire. If this is true, it’s gonna be interesting to see who Pike Central hires. They will definitely be a contender next year if they can keep Stewart n Rigdon.

Why wait until May 2nd if they know who it’s going to be?  Waiting ran off a great player on the girls’ side.

It sucks for Betsy Layne because the players don't want him to come back.  Most of the ones returning (only 5 high schoolers left after he ran off 8 last year) have let the administration know they don't want him, but the administration will bring him back due to the board member putting the pressure on them to bring back his family that he has under his thumb.

Hmm it’s all interesting.  So if Newsome is indeed at BL to stay, I’m intrigued to see their roster for summer ball.

If the above poster is correct about Valley, it seems Pike Central will be looking for a coach.  Would Newsome from BL be interested in that job since he was once the girls coach there and they will have two of the top 5 players in the region next year.

I’m definitely curious to see how all this plays out.  Mountain basketball is fun.

Newsome stays at BL.
SV gets the young coach from Jenkins.

I'd like to see Winston Lee get the job at Shelby Valley. He is a class act. I know most will say how Jenkins won a bunch of games due to a weak schedule, but before Winston got there, they would have lost almost all of those games.

As far as Betsy Layne, I thought they were so excited to get Derrick Newsome. If he does leave on his own, I wonder who they'd go after? I think they have a young coach at the middle school, Mason Hall who has done a lot of winning there, may be time for him to get a high school head coaching job.

Why hasn’t the incident with the recently retired coach been discussed? The Shelby Valley Facebook brigade is very quick to post and share any inadequacies dealing with any other local rivals, why has there been no mention of this incident? I love watching people point their fingers but cower when it comes to their own ….. do tell???

I refuse to post about the incident, but if you don’t know ask your current high school coach…..apparently everyone was discussing it at the state tournament but I just happened to randomly catch wind of it this past week……pretty sickening and hilarious at the same time.

The incident hasn't been discussed because people like you that supposedly know what it was refuse to post about it.

Well you got me there. My point is that everyone doesn’t sprint to social media to bash, but you can guarantee if the shoe was on the other foot in this particular situation it would’ve been posted and shared about a million times. My hope is that the Facebook mob understands this principal. I just wanted to make it clear that lots of people know.

I actually agree with you. That community in particular is pretty bad for being Facebook/Keyboard warriors but then make sure people know when they do something good or love letting people know just how much they love God and how "blessed" they are. They will call names and be rude on Facebook, but then they get up and preach on Sunday and they post scripture.

At the same time though, and not directing this at you in particular but on this site lately, people are just so vague about things. I can understand that if you were at a barber shop or church talking where people knew who you are, but these user names on here should keep people's identities private. In some cases its a high school coaching job, nothing to hold close to the vest like its some CIA matter or something like that.

Just the rumors that have come my way, Pike Central's head coach has never been mentioned at Valley. It was a member of the high school administration that use to coach. As for people that applied, there was never an actual application, it was only resumes being sent to Napier. More than ten people sent resumes and eight people were interviewed supposedly. Was told Derrick Newsome never even submitted a resume, no proof to that however. The kid from Jenkins has been mentioned in the past but have not heard his name in the last month. Heard someone from Morgan County and a former UPike player (not anyone currently coaching at another local school) were being highly considered. One of Rodney's assistants has been doing a lot of open gyms with the boys, and is being considered too. Administration has taken their time to get the opinions of players and people close to the program, but the announcement will hopefully come very soon. My gut feeling is someone currently working at Pike Central who is not the head coach.
#21
Matthew Perry or his son Jordan perhaps with the Morgan County/UPike mention?

I dont know if he wanted to get back in to coaching or not, but Roland Wierwillie lives in the Shelby Valley area, would also be someone that should be considered.

What's going on at SV?

It's been a month since the app deadline, but no coach?

Tyler McCoy hired today.

13 years from a state title and being an absolute powerhouse, SV is now just another job. Sad to see it.

Tyler McCoy is valleys new coach
#27
Extremely sad to see. Hard to see this decision as one that is best for the players, school, or community.
#28
I believe this is a good hire for Valley. He should be able to keep the young talent they have an be In the mix for a regional championship year in and year out.
#29
Not a terrible hire. Probably the best they could do considering the politics of Pike County.
#30
This hire seems odd with the names on the list that applied.

He has no experience running a program. He is not a homegrown kid.

I’m sure this hire has something to do with Greg Napier’s evil plan to act like the Board of Education will not support SV. He will never take credit for slowly ruining every sport at SV but softball.
