[Old School Hound]

What are some of the games that stand out to you as some of the biggest wins in your school's  history? I'm talking the school you attended and/or root for? 

**For me, the 1976 shutout win over Mayfield to win the 2A state title was huge. I was in high school at the time and it was the first title since the mythical titles back in '39 and '55. I knew a lot of the guys on the team and so it was very exciting.  It was a cold, November day in Commonwealth Stadium, spitting snow. The Hounds' defense rose to the occasion against a powerful Mayfield offense to bring home the trophy.  Memorable day.

Others:

**1976 @ Middlesboro . Hounds won 10-9 in what may a been a battle of the top two teams anywhere in Kentucky. A great MBoro team's season ended that night and I nearly got stabbed by an irate Jacket fan.

**1980 State title win over Ft. Campbell . Campbell was probably a 2-3 TD favorite but the Hounds defense again stool tall and won 16-7 at Cardinal Stadium. 

**1982 vs Glasgow .  A 18-6 victory gave Corbin it's last  state title in a cold, rainy 33 degree gametime temperature day. The Hounds played on turf shoes they borrowed from EKU. That Hounds team started off poorly that season, losing to Bryan Station, Madison Central ,Danville, and Cawood. But a big 22-21 come from behind win at Middleboro late in the season pushed the Hounds over .500 and they never lost again.


**1982 @ Middlesboro.  (See above) .Corbin seemed dead in the water and destined to be ousted from playoff contention at halftime , down , I believe, 21-8 . They stormed back in the second half to win 22-21 to send them streaking toward a a state championship.

**2017 :  Another 22-21 win. This time over Tennessee state power , Alcoa.   Anytime you get a win over a powerhouse like Alcoa, it has to make the list of big time wins.   Corbin tied it up at 14 will 11 seconds left in regulation and won it in overtime after a score and a 2-point conversion.


** 2018 :  Corbin v. Boyle - State Semis .  Corbin hosted the Rebs at Campbell Field and posted a rare shutout over a strong Boyle County squad.  The Hounds went on to drop the title game by a point to Central.

**!960 : I wasn't born yet but in 1960 state power Louisville Manual came to town at the end of the season. As the story goes , Corbin's coach, Walt Green, was giving a pregame speech to his troops in the locker room  when someone came in and handed him what appeared to be a telegram. The Coach read it, dropped it on the floor and walked out.  A Redhound player came over and picked up the paper and read it. The Coach had been informed that his mother had passed away.  This motivated the Hounds to go out and "win one for the Gipper." They did just that ,  beating the powerful Manual team  48-36 .  The fact is, it was all a ruse. The coach was up in the press box the whole game. He used the fake telegram to motivate his players. It worked.  The Hounds ended with a perfect record, and even was rated #1 for a time during that season but didn't qualify for the playoffs under a failed ratings system that was much worse than RPI.

**1962:  Highlands comes to town .  Corbin hosted a powerful Highlands team from northern KY in the state semifinals.  Highlands came in as the two-time defending state champion, riding an impressive 34-game winning streak .  In what many describe as the best atmosphere ever for a game in Corbin, the Hounds stunned Highlands and everyone around the state of Kentucky by beating the Birds  10-0 .  The Hounds went on to lose to Danville in the state finals  13-6. Corbin had beaten Danville earlier in the season.


These are some of my favorite big time wins in Corbin history. What are some of the wins that stand out for you as far as your school goes ???

That Belfry team was SO good.   Corbin played a really good first half, jumping out to a 17-0 lead but I think  Corbin fumbled away another potential score  and Belfry scored before the half. Belfry completely dominated the second half.

The streak finally ends. After 13 straight losses to the rivals from Pond Creek, PHS pulled off a monster upset of the future AAA State Champions.

The Panthers return to the state championship for the first time in 24 years with a win at Memorial Field against a team that had defeated them in September.

The Hillard Howard era would not be the only time the Panthers grabbed the gold as they win the program’s 4th State Championship.

Another rebuilding year, another playoff upset. This time at Daniel Field against a Bulldog team that had beaten PHS just a few weeks prior.

Cementing the McNamee era, the Panthers claim the school’s 6th state title and 3rd in 7 seasons.

After over a decade of dominance by Belfry, Pikeville takes its turn with back to back blowout victories and makes it four in a row over the Pirates.

2004 Belfry vs Russell state semi finals is a memorable one for me. Belfry wins this one 39-17 in the final game BHS ever plays at Vipperman Stadium to return to the state finals. The very next week they would defeat Owensboro Catholic to win their 2nd state championship. Breathitt vs Belfry 2007 semi final was a good one too. Belfry absolutely dominates this game to win 62-28 and at one point was 55-13. Belfry had a chance to be the only team in program history to end their season a perfect 15-0 after this game but would lose in the very first matchup with Louisville Central 27-17 the very next week in the state finals in a game they were driving late down 20-17 to take the lead and an untimely fumble cost them. There is a lot of games I can talk about but these are 2 that stick out to me.

I’ll add one. Pikeville traveled to Bluefield WV around ‘95 or 6 I think and blew out the #1 team in all classes in WV. The great Brent Coleman was one of the stars on that team.

that Corbin vs Boyle was probably the biggest and most talked about game that year. Holding them scoreless was about next to impossible. 

that 2016 game vs belfry……. Oh my lord. It was probably the 2nd most attendance record at Campbell field (boyle vs Corbin was probably 1st). Standing room only. Loud. Caused belfry to fumble on the first possession which they hardly ever done. We looked like a machine against one of the best teams I’ve seen in the past decade. I thought we went into the half 17-0. But could be mistaken. 2nd half….. our 4 cylinder machine shut down and Belfry’s 8 cylinder fired up! If we weren’t on the receiving end of it, it would have been a thing of beauty!! Never seen a team just take over a game like that. And Corbin was a pushover either. 

another great game, wasn’t anything big,
just the season district champions but we played Russell co at home. It was a score of 2-0. The ref blew a call a call because  the kickoff went to the end zone and the guy caught it. Which would be a touch back. He barley moved and we tackled him and they called it a safety.

The 1 that comes to mind for Breathitt is 95 semi state at Danville. Danville was class of 2a back then. Breathitt had never won on a state level before but pulled out a come from behind victory that night. I feel like that was the program's coming out party. The next week they go on and win 1st of 3 state titles against a good Franklin Simpson team in double OT.

Loved your trip down memory lane.  Hounds were also thumped by Somerset in '82 something like 20-6. Boyle upset that Jumper team to keep them out of the playoffs and Corbin's line dominated Boyle's in the Regional.  I really think that Somerset squad wan one of the best I saw that didn't win a state title.

I really thought Corbin would win the 2018 title after beating Boyle the way they did.  Still scratch my head on how they lost that one.  

If I remember the 1980 team started slow then caught fire in the last half of the season.

Those '76-'77 squads were powerful.  They broke open a close game vs Boyle in start of 2nd half.  As strong a team as I saw in my HS days.

I agree about the '76-77 teams.  Those were the strongest Corbin squads since I've been following. Incredible defensive teams. Big, strong(and mean), skilled guys on the line.   The  '76  10-9 game at Middlesboro at season's end was a classic defensive struggle between two of the state's best teams.

I remember this wolfcat. That was def a magical time back then in Jackson. Them boys won the state then a couple boys in the football team won the 14th region the same year. Prob the greatest year breathitt sports ever had in my opinion.

2020 Paintsville over KCD. Lone state title, enough said.

2014- Paintsville over Pikeville 2nd round playoffs. Decisive victory over an opponent that beat us 56-8 in the regular season. This game shot Paintsville into title contention for the next 6 years.

Lewis County beating Russell 14-7 in 2011 for the first district championship since 1986 and the first and only win over the Red Devils in school history. The Lions have a chance to best this game as the biggest win in school history if they can get a W in Irvine next week in the playoffs at Estill, as LCHS has never won a playoff football game.

I was at EKU in 1982 and it seemed like we talked about that Middlesboro-Corbin game all week, and this was from Harlan County guys. Several of my friends stopped at that game on the way home. It felt like the game of the year for entire state.

I was at EKU in 1982 and it seemed like we talked about that Middlesboro-Corbin game all week, and this was from Harlan County guys. Several of my friends stopped at that game on the way home. It felt like the game of the year for entire state.

I was at EKU in '82 as well.  The Colonels were rolling back then with Bird from Corbin and Tuck Woolum from Pineville.

I remember that game. Wasnt able to make it to that one but listened on the radio. That was a statement game, no doubt.

There are so many great games played and won by Pikeville through the years and they're all appreciated, but my favorite was in 1987 when the Panthers travelled over to Pond Creek to take on Belfry. What a game! Belfry coming off a state appearance the previous season was primed and loaded to take on Pikeville. What was supposed to be a stern test for the Panthers turned out to be a "pop quiz'' as Pikeville rolled to a 39 - 14 win. That was the season of the Big Five - 0- offense and The Big Dawg Defense. Arguably the best football team in Pike high's history.

1991 vs Ashland- Ashland coming off a state championship Rams shock the Tomcats at Putnam.

1997 vs NCC

2006 vs Ashland

2007 vs Ashland

2008 vs Ashland

2008 vs LCA- Rams secure the district championship

2008 vs Russell-Rams first win since the series was renewed.

2013 vs Fairview- Rams end a 3 year skid to Fairview and secure the first district Championship since 2008 the next week at Paintsville.

2013 vs Ironton- First win over Ironton and 500th win in school history.

2013 vs Pikeville (playoffs)- First Regional Championship in program history.

2014 vs Paintsville (playoffs) - Rams win 2nd regional title

1986 Prestonsburg 12-8 First and only win over the Blackcats in school history
1986 at Whitesburg 34-20 a win over a good Whitesburg team that gave Betsy Layne their first winning record in school history.
1989 Leslie County 24-14 win over a Greg Couch led team. Couch went on to play at EKU and professionally in Canada.

I'm not sure about the win that secured the team's first playoff appearance.
