Corbin had an outstanding team last season and too many people have let the Johnson Central loss affect their opinions of this year's team. Corbin is a top 4A contender and has the talent to reach the finals.

Teams are almost always better off settling on a single quarterback, but it is not a bad thing to give two strong quarterback candidates plenty of snaps during competitive early season games to build depth at the most important position on the team. Even if it costs a team an early season loss or two, having a backup quarterback with quality experience at the position is great insurance for the rest of the season.

The realistic goal of both of these teams is to win state titles this season and I don't fault either coach for giving two quarterbacks extended tryouts. I don't think that either team hurt their chances of achieving that goal last night.

You think Pikeville will be favored against Covington Catholic and LCA?  Plus they have Belfry and a very good Hazard team to deal with after already playing a very good Corbin team and like you said Madison Central also...that schedule is ridiculously tough for a 1A team but it will have them ready for 1A playoffs though no doubt.
Yeah I made up my mind not to comment on this one hahah. It’s early and emotions get the best of some
You're wrong if you think I get emotional over any football game that does not involve JC. Pikeville will be favored in every 1A game they play this season but I will be just as happy to see Raceland or Hazard bring the 1A trophy back to eastern Kentucky as Pikeville.

In the era of RPI it's win at all costs and then develop depth when you can. Otherwise, you may find yourself on the wrong end of a huge homefield advantage in the playoffs. Pikeville/Raceland is the perfect example. Pikeville has 1 win at Raceland and Raceland has never won at Pikeville. Like RPI or not (I don't) this is where we are.

Having said that, I'm over this loss. Kind of like Madison Central last year where we should have won and didn't and that turned out ok. I am with the other Pikeville posters on here - total faith in getting the kinks worked out and firing on all cylinders come playoff time.

What did you do with the guy who argued that a long bus ride is not a factor in winning a football game?  Smile The RPI is a joke but if the best team in any class cannot win a road playoff game, then maybe they don't really belong in the state finals.

Have you been hacked? Do you really need an explanation of how riding in a bus and a huge home field advantage are two entirely different things? Really? And I won't try to argue your other attempted point. In case you really don't know I will just tell you that every single team in every single level of football covets the home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Home field advantage is a real thing and part of that advantage is the short trip to the stadium compared to your counterparts. The bus trip and home field advantage are not two entirely different things. Do you really need an explanation of what home field advantage includes?

You're right Hoot. Getting on those buses was just more than the Pikeville boys could bear. I heard after this fiasco whenever they have to play at Hazard Paintsville or Belfry they are going the day before to hopefully get their legs back by game time.

It’s 3 championships and nobody is disputing that at all. It’s ok to have the opinion that playing 2 QBs doesn’t work though. Because it never does. Again, they will be ready to roll in November.

I realized this evening how unfair I'm being to Coach Mac, who is one of the best coaches in the state of Kentucky no matter the class, and the rest of his staff!! This is one game, the first game of the season, against a damn decent football team in Corbin!! To Mac's credit this is why he's scheduled such strong competition right out of the gate!! I know he'd rather had the W, but now he has a better understanding of where his team is on both sides of the ball, what needs to be corrected or adjusted & how to move forward a little bit better next time they take the field!! If we can see things, God knows Mac does too!! And he's the man to put all the pieces together so when it matters, to make sure Pikeville is best positioned for another ring!! It's times like these that make me realize the importance of really understanding situations instead of doing what I often do & assuming I've got it all figured out!! Especially when it's a life situation & not what could have been done to win a football game.....Godspeed

Well if you seen Sur you definitely seen me because I was sitting beside him about half through the game

I only seen him during the first game. 6foot2 250 DuDe with the Hawain Shirt. Just outside the umbrella LOL. I always look for 64SUR whereever I go..
At that time I was about 3rd person on his left because I was there before the kickoff of the first game and they came later on during the game. They even had me excited about the first game.

Pikeville's coach and program is one I'd love to see my school mimic. Pikeville is playing a brutal schedule. I can see them  hanging tough with Covington Catholic and Madison Central or giving LCA more than they want. I don't think any team will want to face them after they end the regular season against Russellville and Hazard.

Corbin was much better than I was expecting. On film they didn’t show much of having Elam, Wells and Combs all back there together and that combination was deadly. Stretch out of that 2 back set with either Wells leading and Combs with the ball or vice versa absolutely gashed the Panther D.
At the end of the day, even with the loss, that was a great contest for both teams. I’d rather play those type games all year than play teams that you just destroy and gain an over inflated self confidence.
Corbin was a little better and deeper than Pikeville, they have a solid team.
As for Pikeville and all the questions concerning the 2 QB’s, I think both did some good things. My opinion is Boykins def needs to be on the field, he’s just too electric. But I’m not sold that it has to only be at QB. But I’m confident that the Panther staff will figure that all out. I was proud the way the kids kept competing even when they were gassed. They could’ve thrown in the towel and it could’ve really gotten out of hand but in the end Pikeville still had a shot to win.
Anyway I reiterate, that was a great first game and I love our schedule, if we can escape without any major injuries then we should be ready by Nov.
Time to get focused on another huge test this weekend!

Kid probably has small hands for a high-school football. He can run like the wind, but his throws were wobblers with no velocity. Looks like he'd be a dynamic receiver but occasional direct snaps and designed runs he's hard to stop, especially when they play lesser teams than Corbin (which is a LOT of teams). The starting QB threw every bit as good a ball as the 2 Corbin QB's, or very close. Corbin has a "problem", as well as Pikeville, that 95% of teams in Kentucky would pay to have.

Congratulations to Corbin
