Do you know who has been under center for JC?

JC throws a pick... Pikeville returns it to the JC 37...

Don't have clue. JC isn't wearing numbers. It doesn't look like Rice to me.

Looks like the scrimmage is over... neither team scored in the 12 minute quarter.

Pikeville

It looks like McNamee is going to split reps between Duty and Boykins at QB. Their run game is way ahead of the passing game, but that was expected. Panthers were able to run the ball pretty well on JC. Boykins give JC fits many times throughout the scrimmage. Duty is going to get better throwing the ball. He has a big arm and with more reps and experience the passing game is going to come around. Defensively Pikeville was swarming to the ball well and did a good job for the most part, especially in the second half of the scrimmage.

Johnson Central

They looked a played like your typical JC team to me. Reeled off some big runs, broke tackles, and moved the chains. Turnover at the goal line can't happen. Defensively the Eagles looked good and got into the backfield several times and made plays. I don't believe they showed their hand too much, basically run the same plays throughout the scrimmage.

I think the two teams were very comparable, both run the ball really well and play good defense. Both teams are as solid as you would expect and are worthy of their preseason expectations.

I know folks don’t have Pikeville ranked 1st overall in 1A but after tonight watching their defense and how much speed and aggression they have I’d have a hard time seeing offenses outmatch them. Now on offense they hardly ran Birchfield tonight and their offense was trying to get a full for QB. Duty throws the ball really well but the kid from Pike Central is fast as lightning and was able to get some really good chunks on the ground against Johnson Central. Birchfield and Him back in the backfield is speed that’ll be hard to match in 1A.

I said it Months ago and I'll say it again, With Tayvion Boykins at QB Pikeville's Offense will be one of the Best in the State. He should and Will end up being the Starting QB.

Sounds like 2 evenly matched teams. If Pikeville gets good play from new QBs they will be really hard to beat in class A this year.

Thanks for the updates and analysis BA. Had an issue come up at the last minute and didn’t get to go watch this one. Sounds like a beneficial scrimmage for both teams.

As long as Boykins stays healthy and Duty and the passing game improves, no one in class A will stop Pikeville's offense. It'll be a nightmare to prepare for by playoff time.

Pikeville is going to be a force running the football. The only big runs they've ripped off so far was with Boykins, but they ran the ball nicely the whole first half of this scrimmage. Pass blocking hasn't been great for Pikeville. JC got to Duty and almost blew up a few other plays in the backfield, but Boykins was able to slip out of a few tackles.

Pikeville has scored once so far with Boykins.

Johnson Central to me is clearly the better team so far. They've scored 2 times I believe with their varsity, maybe another could've went for a 3rd touchdown, but the coaches blew the whistle. They're aggressive and good at what they do.

Boykins is the fastest kid on the field. A for sure difference maker for Pikeville.
Does the Boykins kid play baseball or run track? Birchfield playing tonight?

According to Pikeville Football Twitter, JC varsity scored once on a long run and Pikeville varsity scored once on a Boykins scramble. Then no scores in 20:00 scrimmage. Is this accurate? They usually are on the money with their tweets.

Now here is my opinion of the game Johnson Central scored once on both of their 10 play segments and Pikeville scored once on their 2. Boykin running was excellent but Blake had trouble getting out of the backfield but as usual he made some miss and got some yardage. The rhythm in the backfield between the quarterbacks and the running backs is not very good but I believe that will come. Defense looked good at times but it’s really hard to tell because every 3 plays they were rotating the 3 down line man and some linebackers out.Pikeville has a lot to work on but they looked better tonight than they did the other day.But as always GO PANTHERS!!!

Here's some Screenshots of David & Darryl's tweet of their thoughts about Pikeville and Tavion at QB.

A different one.

Definitely agree with the fluidity of the backfield seems a little off. But that’s to be expected with two QBs rotating in and out instead of Macnamee who has been the QB for his entire career. But once Boykins and Birchfield start to click things could get scary. That’s elite speed back there

Boykins uncle was a great friend of mine and teammate at Pikeville, damn I wish he was here too see his nephew Ball out. Very glad too see him in the Maroon and White.

I thought going into the season Duty should be the QB but Boykins is electric.

I'm probably biased because I love the family but I'm hoping he's QB1.

Boykins was very dangerous in the broken plays. Most kids would of took a loss where he was turning them in to first downs. JC was missing their linebacker.

If i was pikeville I would be most excited about the d line and linebacker play. They played tough and down hill all night.

Any media outlet that does not contain Pikeville as their #1 preseason team, doesnt have any credibility, imo. Unless they lost the house(which they far from had that happen) they are still the team to beat, coming off a 2nd title in 3 years.

You got to watch those Ram posters they like to put their team in position of the underdog role so it will hype the team up they all have seen the ratings and have them as top dog but the exception is Ram A Devil and he will telll you the rams are going to win by 11 billion

If pikeville can find a way to get boykin as QB1 and focus on their quick game they are unbeatable IMO. The kid looked pretty dang impressive and next to birchfield is immediately the most dynamic backfield in 1A and 2A. Maybe even in the bigger classes. Someone with such speed and quickness that was displayed in this game shouldn’t be in a QB battle.
#57
JC is till JC. I don’t know their players well but they will be very good again.

Pikeville looking like the 2 QB system is going to go throughout the year. Both have good strengths but huge weaknesses. Lines were solid.
#58
I’m not a fan of the 2- QB system.. They should make the call no later than game 2-4. Rotating those in and out messes with the rhythm of the offense..

Got to agree. I don’t particularly like that system for the reasons mentioned. Coach could put Boykins in any skill position on the field and he would catch lightning in a bottle! Maybe at a wideout position or even at RB or both. This kid has a motor, fast forward!!

He’s definitely an athlete and you can plug him in anywhere.. Hoping this battle doesn’t cause controversy.. There may not be none, but some parents are hard to deal with when it comes to situations like this.. I will be following to see how this turns out..
