This was the one I was gonna post, Jet.  In my mind it is the saddest song ever! I remember listening to it as a 10 year old boy and being very, very sad. Filled me with sadness and fear and thoughts of losing my parents or grandparents .  As sad as the song is, it is also one of the best songs of any decade.

I loved Warren Zevon!  Such a unique artist. He could tell a story like no one else.

Here was his final love letter to his fans, friends, and family:

From my favorite year for pop music - 1974 :

Leave it to an Englishman to capture , so sublimely, the shameful and harsh treatment given by this country to its Native people.

Another favorite from the great music year of 1974.   Here's Henry Gross with "Shannon."

Anyone care to take a guess what this song is about??? It has  to do with something that Beach Boy Carl Wilson once owned. Very sad song. Hard for me to listen to.

Love the song but 2 different dogs if I'm not mistaken OSH.

Whether it's God, the Universe, Source Energy, or just my dumb luck , I'm very thankful for my parents. They have been a blessing and have always stood by me, even when they could no longer live together.  Thankful for you as well, Jet.

Written by the ultra-talented Mac Davis. Brings me to tears every time.

The whole David Gates and Bread catalog would, by itself, make a good  list of sad songs.

This heart-wrenching ballad captures what it must feel like to lose a parent.  Gates wrote this tear jerker in 1972 after the death of his father, who he has said was his greatest influence.

You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew
Were all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
You never said too much
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can't let go
And I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Is there someone you know
You're loving them so
But taking them all for granted?
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And they don't hear the words you long to say
I would give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again
