Best live concerts you’ve seen
#1
The favorite song thread and having too much unwanted time on my hands right now got me thinking about this. I love live music so I’m gonna list my top five, be interested to hear other folks lists.

1. Prince at Rupp on the Purple Rain tour in Dec, 1984. I was a senior at UK and Prince and Springsteen came to Rupp four days apart! Could only scrape up enough extra cash for one show, and I’m glad I picked this one. The entire thing was just mind-blowing.

2. Van Halen at Knoxville Civic Coliseum, 1980 (I think). As my screen name suggests, I like Van Halen better musically with Sammy Hagar. But for a 17-year-old kid, seeing the original Van Halen in their prime, with Eddie being Eddie and Diamond Dave jumping off the top of 8-foot high amps while drinking massive amounts of Jack, AND getting half the girls in the crowd to flash him—yeah it made an impression.

3. AC/DC at Rupp, early 80s, Back in Black tour. This is my favorite rock band, and they were spectacular, I just wish I could have seen them with Bon Scott once before he passed away, I felt he was the perfect vocalist for them.

4. Dixie Chicks at Rupp, around 2000. May seem like a strange pick to some, but they were fantastic live. I’m sure folks of a certain age don’t realize how big they were, only second to Garth in the country world for a stretch, I hate that they got blackballed out of Nashville, a lot of great music was lost.

5. Travis Tritt, any of the 10 or so times I’ve seen him. He’s my favorite country artist of all time, and never fails to deliver on a live show. I saw him for the first time at Tombstone Junction in the early 90s (you younger folks can ask someone older what that was).

That’s my list. I would estimate I’ve seen well over 200 live shows, the first was Kiss in July of 1979 at Rupp Arena. Then last month, 41 years later, who did my son go to Rupp to see? Kiss, of course! Long live Rock n Roll!

Here are my top 5 favorite concerts that I have been to. Metallic was by far the best. I have seen them twice. The second time was the Black Album tour, but I thought the And Justice Tour was better.

1. Metallic and The Cult- And Justice For All Tour -Charleston, WV

2. Warrant, Ratt, and Gold Tooth- Some bar in Lexington that I don't remember back in 2000.

3. Motley Crue and Faster ***** Cat Dr Feel Good Tour- Rupp Arena

4. AC\DC and Cinderella - Blow Up Your Video Tour- Rupp Arena

5. Billy Joel and Elton John Face To Face Tour - Columbus, Oh U.S. Bank Arena

I saw Kiss with Aerosmith at Freedom back in the early 2000's. I thought Aerosmith blew them away. I would love to see Van Halen. I prefer Sammy Hagar too, but I think we are in the minority.

Yeah, I much prefer Aerosmith to Kiss also. And I’m a huge fan of Sammy’s in any way, solo with Van Halen, with Chickenfoot, the Circle, the Waboritas. Rock and Roll Road trip is a fun show. I would love to go to one of his birthday party shows in Cabo. Hard to imagine he’s 72 now.

I didn't realize he was that old.

One of my biggest regrets is never seeing Freddy Mercury and Queen live. Had a chance and passed back in early 80s. And I’m glad you included Lionel Richie and Tina Turner. I saw both of them, at different times, and both were great.

1) Kenny Rogers back when he was with The First Edition, at Cumberland College 1970.

2. Van Halen at Knoxville Civic Coliseum, 1980 (I think).
Yes, it was 1980. Smile

3) George Jones at The Arena the year before he died. I LOVE The Arena for concerts; it sucks for ballgames. IMO

4) Travis Tritt. I saw him for the first time at Tombstone Junction in the early 90s (you younger folks can ask someone older what that was).
I cannot believe I've seen 2 of your top 5!!!!

Granny Bear, we must have been at the same Van Halen show then! That’s when Civic Coliseum was still festival seating, meaning no chairs on the floor and you could get as close to the stage as you could manage. Now you weren’t one of the ladies flashing David Lee that night were you?!?!😂😂😂
#10
Well of course I was!!! I used to be a fun person!!

38 special Rockin into the Night song. Blackfoot with all orginal members, then all orginal Molly Hatchet members. 15 rows from the stage. Rickey Medlocke and Donnie Van Zant set to left of stage to watch Danny Joe Brown sing. The Hatchet bus pulled up as we were outside waiting and me and my friends run over and Danny Joe through up his hand to us. Rickey Medlocke is one of my music heroes and i have a autograph from a Skynyrd show.
#13
I love Rickey Medlocke too, Blackfoot was an underrated band, and he’s been great with the Skynyrd lineup that is touring now. That’s another great regret for me, never getting to see the original Skynyrd. Ronnie Van Zant was a musical genius.

Seeing Skynyrd today is about like seeing the Beatles without Lennon or the Stones without Jaggar....I guarantee your sitting there thinking that you were seeing the "real" band and not a glorified cover band.
#15
My problem with the ‘today’ Skynyrd is even though Johnny Van Zant seems like a great guy, there was only one Ronnie. The vocals just don’t have the same soul.
#16
The songs from the album done in Atlanta our my favorites. Crossroads, T for Texas and Call me the Breeze. All 3 songs are non Skynyrd written songs. I have Leon Wilkeson bass player autograph. Dale Kranz-Rossington wiped a towel over boyfriend/husband Gary face and tossed to me. I mentioned Medlocke autograph earlier. Whenever i would attend a show i carried a sports page in back pocket. I when to side stage door at Nashville and a guitar tech took my pen and paper carried to Rickey for the signing.

Well Granny Bear, I saw you had seen Kenny Rogers, and the Gambler is no longer with us.
#18
I saw Kenny once at Rupp with Dolly when he was pretty much at the height of his country popularity. Only Granny Bear could have seen him while he was still considered rock.😳😂

If I could go back in time, the one that I would really like to see is Pink Floyd.
#22
Where's Dusty at? He's seen more concerts than all of us put together.

For me it would be Queen, just to see Freddy Mercury in action, and the original Skynyrd.

Been working for weeks between tasks trying to remember them all.
Also have a multi-part answer.
Probably post tonight as beer and quarantine are my only two tasks lol.
