Martin County to charge live streamers.

The Eagle Knows Wrote:I think the Martin County HS broadcasting / journalism class live streams the boys and girls home games and ANYONE can watch them on youtube for FREE. I think the kids get graded for their efforts because it's part of their class, and the live stream they do is FREE, FREE, FREE to anyone that wants to watch it live and those games remain on youtube if someone wants to watch the game at a later time... IT'S FREE, they don't limited the broadcast to only Martin county fans, IT'S FREE to everyone to watch, if they want to watch the game, IT'S FREE...

I think it would be safe to say that every family in this area has access to a computer or smart phone to watch a game on for FREE. I have watched their broadcast and think those students do a great job and I think it may be part of their class requirement and it appears the kids are having good time with it from what i've seen, so what's the the problem, IT'S FREE... lol

I think every school should do live stream broadcasts of ALL their school events. I don't know of any school who doesn't have the internet, so why not broadcast.

There are no free lunches in life, so why does any radio station or live streamer think they can just show up and demand anything from any school system. Go to the EXPO center or UK and tell them you're going to live stream a game or do radio broadcast and see how they react to your request.

I think Martin County may be one of the smallest school districts in the state and they can manage to provide this streaming service for FREE to anyone that may want to watch a Martin County boys or girls game for FREE and for those of you who don't want to watch a Martin County game for FREE it has cost you nothing, no money, no time, just nothing.

Why are we acting like Martin co is the only school with a media dept that streams their games? Many schools do this on YouTube. Just not sure what this has to do with ANYTHING? Paintsville have kids that do the same deal plus they support D&D and TSR. Just Makes someone at Martin Co appear awful needy.

Blue_Bird96 Wrote:It 100% does not affect the gate. That’s just something that they use as an excuse to charge these outlets. Just like I said with Paintsville and Johnson Central. Radio coverage on every game plus many games covered by streaming and both houses stay PACKED! Low gates fall on the program. It Just hurts the elderly fans and ones who cannot physically make it or fans that have to work. I’ve spoke with many people at surrounding schools on this issue and it very much appears it will be solely Martin Co. Maybe Not the best business decision with The District Tourney right around the corner.

Once again we have in house live streaming so the elderly can watch that.

JuicedMtnGoat Wrote:The excuse I think is laughable is the one that they do not want teams to have film on their team. Like this is the 80s and very few people can record video anytime, anywhere. Plus there are scouts at every game.

Very laughable Juiced! First reason was “because of the lack of attendance” next reason is “our kids stream it on YouTube let’s give the money to the kids” now it’s “ Media outlets are the ONLY way that 1 team can obtain video of another teams games”. Someone at Martin co just needs to pony up and say “the sole reason we’re doing this is because we’re trying to find a way to make money off of someone else that’s doing the work”.

I’m assuming you must be close to the media outlets, just wait and see it’s gonna happen elsewhere.

I think there’s more to the story then what’s being let on and CA is right, Martin County won’t be the only school that does something like this.

WMDJ’s Jamey Johnson brought up a interesting point on his Facebook about being governed by the FCC. Radio announcers cannot do and say whatever they want about coaches, players, officials, schools, etc.

We also had two 15th region streaming services just duel it out on Twitter last week. You know school officials, coaches, and others seen that. It doesn’t look good on either one of them.

Personally, the more streams we have the better it is for me. I work a night shift job and I can’t make it to most games. But if someone is there or the school is offering a live broadcast I get to watch it. So I want streaming services and I wish every school would adopt what Martin County, Floyd Central, and others offer with their live broadcasts.

I think the only way to make everyone happy from the media outlets, to schools and then the community would be to charge the streamers $50-100 for a credential to broadcast their game if you are going to allow it. If you are not going to allow any outside live streamers to broadcast your game because you have a school broadcasting team then that throws away the fee.

There has to be a happy medium with the broadcasters and the administration of schools. What they are doing for the exposure of these kids is great and has helped me watch players like Cody Potter who I normally would never get to see play because I don’t go to games. And so many other players so we definitely need these guys in our community in my opinion.

1st post in years on this site. Lol

Most know who I am, so I want to start off by saying this is an amazing thread and I see both sides of the debate. I don't want any haters, just sharing the experiences that I and JC had during our live streaming days.

We started live streaming back in 2010 through a wonderful agency, ihigh.com. They were great to work with and offered everything up for free. They had a few things we had to do for the software usage (use their ads), but was pretty much free. When they sold out to another company, we decided to switch to the NFHS Network that the KHSAA uses. The software and graphics with NFHS is phenomenal! We still have our JC site on it, but we haven't broadcasted in a few years. It may have changed, but with NFHS, you had to broadcast so many games and / or so many different sports to keep it free.

JC, my broadcast class, decided to quit broadcasting games be cause of several reasons. One, when our teams traveled to away games, most wouldn't allow us there. We were the only ones at the time doing this and they were afraid of losing gate money. Two, some of our coaches didn't want their games broadcasted because other teams could watch our games at anytime.. Three, equipment was, and still is expensive. We used four camera angles plus had to run 100's of feet of cable to use the cameras. Plus a soundboard and computer for broadcasting.

I want to say I love the different agencies trying to broadcast these games. There is a lot of POSITIVES for our area to showcase our student athletes! I agree these agencies NEED to raise sponsorship money so they broadcast games. I saw where one from the Scouting Report said in a video, they do take sponsorships so they can broaden their program and can showcase their student athletes. That is VERY MUCH NEEDED! Sponsor these guys and David & Daryl, don't just get on the computer and bash the Martin County for trying to do the same thing. Their equipment costs the same as the Scouting Report and David & Daryl. I think I saw that half proceeds go to the school and the other half goes to the journalism class that works there tail off to put on a quality show.

If everyone would help out and back EVERYONE and not just their broadcasting crew, we can put EKY broadcasting and our wonderful students on the map!

I hope this sheds some light on the past history of broadcasting and why we need to broaden it to new heights for students!!!!

Have a blessed day!

I don't Understand what everyone is getting so upset for. If you're getting paid by the ads that D&D and TSR does, why is so bad for schools to ask them to pay a fee to broadcast the games? The money is going to the kids. They may be broadcasting only to help the kids out but they are STILL making MONEY off the kids.

Good idea for each school to have students broadcast their home games. Great for elderly people in the community that can't get out and attend games and also you can watch a game while attending another game. But if you are going to charge a fee to stream games I agree charge the radio too. Let's not let this effect getting coverage out to the public so we can promote our local talent.

The guys who do the live broadcast for Betsy Layne sports just posted on twitter saying that the district tournament will cost $120 to broadcast games. $120 for boys and $120 for girls so $240 total to broadcast anything and everything at the district tourney. What do you all think of this fee?

I think each school should do what's best for their school and if a school chooses to charge a fee to live stream or a radio broadcast, then that's their choice however if they charge live streamers they should also charge the radio stations.

It's my understanding the Martin County HS journalism class will be live streaming the games on YouTube for everybody to watch for FREE. Exactly how many different live streams or radio broadcasts do we need for a game? If a school provides a live stream for free a to anyone that wants to watch the game for Free, what's the problem?

Let's get mad at the EXPO Center for not allowing any live streams of games, how is their policy in anyway supporting or promoting local athletics, it doesn't. I know radio stations broadcast games but do they charge them a fee to broadcast the games ???

I’m totally in favor. Why should D&D make money off these schools? . The schools should do it themselves and sell adds to help support the programs. If D&D can make enough money by selling adds to cover the streaming cost so the schools benefit too than great. Don’t agree with a free ride

My issue isn't even the money. It's the fact that there is no accountability to these groups that come in to live stream. I was watching one group, and I don't even know their name, that said they are "infotainment" and that they are regulated by no one. Well if that is their thought, then they are already thinking of the next thing to do to get more like and shares. So if schools don't develop policies charging them, then they need to develop policies to hold them accountable.

I feel the fee is reasonable. Unfortunately for us we didn’t have but one sponsor and we were going to donate that money to the booster clubs. With the news of the fee for the district tournament we put the post on Facebook. Within the hour we had businesses who agreed to sponsor. I guess it shows if you bring a good quality broadcast people will believe in you. We never planned on broadcasting to make money and never will. All we wanted was to promote our students at Betsy Layne.

Be careful. You know what they say about making assumptions and NO I’m not close to either media outlet. Just understand the difference of what’s good exposure for our kids and Greed.

Which schools in the 15th currently live stream games and are they free or do you have to pay a fee to watch?

As mentioned on this thread, Martin County's journalism class produces their home games for free on Youtube.

Bobcat Sports Live debuted this season on Facebook for free and they cover Betsy Layne home games and several away games. Adam Newsome and Thomas Rainey call the games. If I'm not mistaken, Thomas helped Mark Martin with his Mark's Coaches Corner that he did on Facebook the last couple of seasons. Mark would do games around the region though primarily in the 58th District but I've not seen him do any broadcasting this season.

I think Floyd Central home games are also streamed over Youtube for free as well. I'm not sure if all of them are, but I have saw several on there.

Paintsville streams home games on YouTube free of charge as well but also has no problem with the extra promotion from other media outlets of our athletes.
