Martin County to charge live streamers.

I don’t know why any business would want to pay for an advertisement to get their name out there. I mean these athletes don’t pay them to put their names out there.

Oh. I didn’t see that. This is definitely a double edged sword. They are putting the work in going to different paces and announcing games and broadcasting live to people that otherwise wouldn’t even have interest in those games. I’ve not been able to get to a Betsy Layne game once this year but I’ve watched two on their broadcasts. So I’ve definitely used their platform for my own benefit. But charging that much for sponsors to show on your stream is rough. But then again, would those businesses get that exposure without being on their livestream?

It’s more about business in the community helping out these outlets to keep it going so our youth Benefit from it. Not so much for the business’s to get their name out.

1. This is for live streaming media that makes money of the kids not the parents in the gym.
2. we aren't the only school doing it we are just the first to do it.

#2 Not sure about that. Most schools understand the value.

At a Pikeville game this year there was four people broadcasting live to Facebook from the press box and I don’t know the whole story. But the cops got involved and had to ask them to leave because they were in the way of the radio guys or something. I can’t remember what my buddy told me who does radio for the Panthers football team. But I know that no one is allowed to live broadcast at Pikeville football games and as well at Belfry. Coach Haywood won’t allow any live broadcasts. That’s what Bobby Norman told me on the podcast one day.

Won’t do that out of respect of the people that told me. It was also brought up at the 15th region meeting held not long ago.

It’s definitely happening everywhere Redneck. The bad thing is it’s going to hurt the exposure of the kids in the long run. Hopefully they can work out deals with these outlets and charge them a very small minimal fee to broadcast live and everyone’s happy and the kids continue to get great coverage.

If I were the outlets, I’d just stop doing it all together. They do it for the kids. The time and money that they already put into doing what they do should be plenty enough for getting these young athletes the exposure they have gotten. Like I said earlier, a lot of the posts D&D ran on the Martin County boys all summer long got 1000’s of views and was shared 100’s of times. People should be happy about this, not greedy.

I don’t think it’s the people as much as the people I’m charge. These principals and athletic directors are probably getting all kinds of pushback for letting these guys into their games with no fee broadcasting the game online for free hitting their gate sales and concessions stand money.

But the money these guys are making from sponsors depending on how many they have at that 100-200 buck price is probably just now paying for their equipment. I know I bought a microphone, and handy recorder, and some xlr cables and it was very pricey for the podcast. Thankfully I had some help from a very generous person that pitched in money on the equipment because they believed in the idea I had for the podcast.

I don’t think the Expo Center allows live streaming during the All A or Regional tournaments? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

It impacts the amount of money at the gate. They use all kinds of excuses but it comes down to money. If people can watch on the Internet they may choose that over going to the games.

You can livestream just without visuals of the game. So basically they recorded their faces lives while commentating the game. You can’t show the actual game. It’s basically a glorified radio stream.

I already mentioned Pikeville and Belfry not allowing their games to be broadcast live. Martin County isn’t the only one and won’t be the last.

I think it’s dumb. Are they gonna fine a high school kid that takes a notion to live stream their buddy playing ball?

I think live streaming and broadcasting games are helping to excite folks and energize them to go see their high school basketball team play. Also, it gives away teams and their families a way to watch them without having to travel. If anything. Schools should be paying them to live stream, not the other way around. Broadcasting games help the student athletes get noticed and shines a spotlight on the community.

These streamers also paid to do the JC/Paintsville game so I don't see why it's such a fuss, it's gonna happen at a lot of schools sooner than later.

The excuse I think is laughable is the one that they do not want teams to have film on their team. Like this is the 80s and very few people can record video anytime, anywhere. Plus there are scouts at every game.

I think the Martin County HS broadcasting / journalism class live streams the boys and girls home games and ANYONE can watch them on youtube for FREE. I think the kids get graded for their efforts because it's part of their class, and the live stream they do is FREE, FREE, FREE to anyone that wants to watch it live and those games remain on youtube if someone wants to watch the game at a later time... IT'S FREE, they don't limited the broadcast to only Martin county fans, IT'S FREE to everyone to watch, if they want to watch the game, IT'S FREE...

I think it would be safe to say that every family in this area has access to a computer or smart phone to watch a game on for FREE. I have watched their broadcast and think those students do a great job and I think it may be part of their class requirement and it appears the kids are having good time with it from what i've seen, so what's the the problem, IT'S FREE... lol

I think every school should do live stream broadcasts of ALL their school events. I don't know of any school who doesn't have the internet, so why not broadcast.

There are no free lunches in life, so why does any radio station or live streamer think they can just show up and demand anything from any school system. Go to the EXPO center or UK and tell them you're going to live stream a game or do radio broadcast and see how they react to your request.

I think Martin County may be one of the smallest school districts in the state and they can manage to provide this streaming service for FREE to anyone that may want to watch a Martin County boys or girls game for FREE and for those of you who don't want to watch a Martin County game for FREE it has cost you nothing, no money, no time, just nothing.

I’m sure these guys aren’t wanting anything for free. I’m positive they’d pay their dues to broadcast the games on their networks.

It 100% does not affect the gate. That’s just something that they use as an excuse to charge these outlets. Just like I said with Paintsville and Johnson Central. Radio coverage on every game plus many games covered by streaming and both houses stay PACKED! Low gates fall on the program. It Just hurts the elderly fans and ones who cannot physically make it or fans that have to work. I’ve spoke with many people at surrounding schools on this issue and it very much appears it will be solely Martin Co. Maybe Not the best business decision with The District Tourney right around the corner.
