South Laurel 56 Clay County 45
#1
Final
#2
I guess this isn’t Clay’s year...again. 🙄
#3
Playing a bad zone against a excellent 3 point shooting team is usually not a good idea.
#4
Until Clay can learn to guard and play man to man, they’ll be no more region titles. I heard Little A wanted to make it mandatory for the elementary schools to play man to man. But he met a lot of resistance from coaches and parents.

I wasn’t able to make it out for this one so I can’t say anything from a visual perspective but this feels like a slight overreaction. Excuses or not it was at South with 10pm+ tip and down basically a starter (I know South could’ve had a player out as well). I still think it’s a 3 team race at a neutral site in late-February or March. Match-ups mean a lot.

currently (Injuries accounted for) I see the 13th Region ranked this way.

North

South/Knox

Corbin
Clay

Everyone else.....

Is it possible that If Clay doesn't figure things out, they could miss another region.
#7
Davis is really good at getting kids to buy into playing on the defensive end. Clay will b fine. South is no where near 100%. Hasn’t been for awhile but they been gutting it out
#8
If Clay doesn’t beat Jackson, Red Bird, or OBI to make an appearance in the region then it’s worse than some make it out to be; I personally think they will. Everything is about tournament time. Clay could get South first round and lose by 20 or North could beat South and meet Clay in the finals (maybe Clay still loses). Anything can happen so these games matter but I wouldn’t over-analyze much.

That’s how I rank em too.

Clay won’t miss regions. I think they ditched the blind draw for district. Clay may struggle with the Laurels, but OBI, Redbird or Jackson isn’t beating them

I think it’s between North, South or Knox Central.

So Little A has a great idea to make kids better in the long run and it’s shot down...sounds about right. Clay is terrible defensively and most games they wait for Langdon to rebound while everyone else watches. Clay has enough talent/athleticism with this group to win region easily. Gray can’t motivate the kids is what it looks like to me.

Knox could be the third team. Like I said, you almost have to wait until you see the draw. There’s a scenario for those 3 to be on one side. There’s also the possibility of Clay drawing South first game which wouldn’t be good for the Tigers.

clay goes the way Curry goes. Curry has a good game clay plays well. For whatever reason Clay doesn’t use Langdon. Would be one of the biggest weapons in region. Very seldom unless he gets a offensive rebound does he get it.

Clay ain’t guarded since the late 80’s. Still didn’t then. Just out scored folks

Clay SHOULD be the hands down favorite to win this region. I remember people saying a few years back that it would be a colossal failure if they didn't win two to three regions with this bunch. Well, half of them are seniors now and this bunch hasn't done anything up to this point. Last year was a huge underachievement and the players have shown they havent got much better. Furthermore, Clay plays tight in the big post season games and the coach has very little experience in regional games on top of that. I would say Clay is in trouble. Either north or south wins region this year.

By the looks of the final score I’m not sure if defense was their problem. Holding a quality opponent in the 50’s should give one a really good shot at winning

56 to 45 please let clay play fast and it would b 80-60

My thinking as well. Didn’t make the game but a lot of people acting like 56 is 80-90. Being in the 40’s is an issue to me.

I'll be Mr. Obvious. South has always played good defense, and played it last night. Good defense makes the other team struggle to find a good shot and take more time off the clock. That same amount of game time is taken from South. Fewer minutes on offense means fewer shots for both teams. South got wide open shots for the most part and made them. Clay did not. Clay can't play a fast paced game. If you increase the possessions and shot attempts for both teams it's still a 15-20 point loss regardless if it's in the 90's or 40's.

Can somebody answer this for me. South Laurel Matthew Cromer steals the ball up by 11pts with 58 seconds remaining in game. I’m not sure but Clay made no attempt to cross center court. Anything can happen in 58 seconds, fight to the end TongueirateSho

Of course that’s the case but I’m not even looking that far into it. I’m saying the Tigers should’ve made two more baskets, lost by 6-7 and people would’ve talked about how good of a game it was. Instead they don’t show up, lose by 11, and suddenly go to a team that might not make the region. If I didn’t know the score from the comments I would’ve thought it was 82-50.

I would have shot a lay up. Lol

Clay is very inconsistent, my opinion they will play Oneida in the district as a two and three seed. All the pressure will be on clay and Oneida shot the ball well in Jackson County’s gym earlier this year, which is where the district is. If Oneida continues to improve should be a ball game. I’m a clay fan but no way I’d look over Oneida in the district.

Well, big Clay gets another shot at South next Saturday night in the Bobby Keith classic. Problem is, the Tigers have a huge game at North the night before.

How did they end up scheduling South against Clay on back to back weekends? There were other teams in these classics.

I think the comments you're talking about is because it was never really in question. Was a 16-18 point game with not a lot of time left. But I get what you're saying.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes more sense. 11 points from the outside didn’t look as bad as people were making it. As someone else said, they will play again soon. If it is bad in South’s favor again then the Clay may be in trouble comments could be valid. On the flip side, each could make a run and never see one another.

I was at the game and it could possibly be the worst I have seen Clay look in a long time. South shot lights out from 3.....but I can't recall one shot in which the shooter wasn't wide open. South controlled the game from the opening tip.......Clay played a lazy zone and South moved the ball around very nicely and made open shots. That is why the score was so low. South would have a 2 minute possession and then drain a 3.........There was never a sense of urgency from Clay. Everyone wants to say why don't this Clay team play man to man....the answer is simple....they can't......they don't have the speed or depth to guard teams man. Their only hope is to play a lazy zone and hope the team shoots about 10% from the 3 point line.

Clay is not coached very well. Gray was a mistake from the beginning. I'm not a fan at all. Teams that are patient and spread them out on offense can have any shot they want. If the post season plays out like I think it will then Clay needs to send Gray packing and bring in Little A. If Gray can't win the region this year, he never will.

Hard to see them going very far with that zone. South really got after it defensively and made their open shots. They are hard to beat when they play like that. Couldnt understand why Clay didnt go inside to their big guys more, thats where they had an advantage. Also, I would have been embarrassed if my guys quit with a minute on the clock like that, they practically walked off the court. Cromer showed great restraint not ripping the rim off right there haha

Honestly, the last CC team I thought could do any damage at state was the one with Trey Farmer and Blake Smith.

Clays a decent team and one that can get on a roll, but I never saw them as on the same level with North or South.
