Russell won in 2005 and Lost 15-12 to Mercer in 2006.

T-Cats, you love to really down this Russell team this year. We all need to remember is that Ashland got tired of getting beat by Johnson Central so they slide down to 3A so that the Devils can now take over for JC! You have over 21,000 population and Russell-Flatwoods has approx. 10,000 and your in 3A? Russell High School has 600 studens and Ashland has near 900 students??? Just had to get away from Johnson Central in 4A (Lol)
and by the way the Russell Cupcakes in 2019 is who Raceland, Ironton, Fleming County, West Carter, your Ashland, and EC. Normally, Montgomery and Lawrence County have been stronger and Mason County started to turn things around so where is your cupcakes on the Russell schedule for 2019. This year's schedule for Russell with the new District setup with Ashland, GC, and EC and then playing Raceland, Ironton, Fleming County, WC, and usually tough Montgomery County and Lawrence County makes this one of the best schedules Russell has had over the last few years. Tell your Tomcats to stop playing 4Ohio and WVA schools and that might help your RPI!!! Play Ironton and then play some strong Kentucky 3A or 4A schools. Like Russell still playing strong teams like Fleming and West Carter this year both of these teams finished 8-2 and 7-3 and both were strong this year. Why not Ashland still playing Johnson Central or is Ashland just done playing JC because it was too hard too beat them? (Lol)

I always think in any sport it is hard to beat a team twice or 3 times in 1 season. Maybe it was good for Russell to lose on that 1 play 95 yard TD Pass in 4th Quarter 21-14. Russell knows what it needs to do to finish this game off and they know they get a Home Game vs. an Old-time rival Belfry at Russell the following week. I look for Russell in a tight one 28-21 over Ashland and meet Belfry at Russell on Nov. 22nd.

Switch the schedules and look at where each would be. Ashland would more then likely be undefeated playing that rough schedule the Devils played this season. Russell would be 6-4 at best or 5-5 playing Ashland’s schedule. Swapping JC for Spring Valley isn’t a down grade. Switching Rowan for Wheelersburg is an upgrade. Ashland getting the shaft in the RPI won’t happen for long. KSHAA will fix it because of the Trinitys of the State who have a lower RPI then Russell. Doesn’t matter how many kids Ashland has it’s the Boy population at the school that matters and both East and GC along with the Tomcats all had enough to drop down. Sucks Russell has a good team but Ashland being in the district now is going to send you home earlier then you want. If Russell wants out of Ashland’s district maybe send all the GC boys back to Greenup and they can drop to 2A and be back in a district with West and Bath etc. Ashland has played a much more challenging schedule then Russell and it hopefully pays off Friday night. If Russell were to upset Ashland I’ll be the first to congratulate them and be at their game next week probably against Belfry pulling for the Devils to win. It’s a friendly rivalry Russell Ashland but we still want too beat each other at every sport. Good luck Friday I think Russell needs all the luck they can muster on ELM Street at Putnam.

3A has the potential for numerous great games this Friday, but this one may be the best. Ashland is a beautiful part of the state, and this contest should be more than worth the price of admission.

Couple of other thoughts if Ashland would have stayed in 4A JC and Ashland would be in different districts this season. Max-Preps has Ashland at 1673 in the U.S. and 13th in the State. Russell is 2348 nationally and 23rd in KY. And David5164 Russell taking over for JC is a joke right? Ashland owns Russell in Football at the moment.13 of 14 I believe.

T-cats, Ashland fans never change. You love to dish it out but can't take it when someone challenges you. I have never said anything negative towards Ashland and yes Ashland has been tough over the last 10 years. This happens in sports all the time but I see that changing with Russell and Ashland after this year's game and how Russell future looks down the road for sometime. The Freshman beat Ashland pretty bad and we have a QB Logan Lundy that three close to 300 yards in that game. We have some really talented players in 8th and 9th grade so I see that winning turning around for Russell Against Ashland in the future so we shall see in the future. Like always it will be a great rivalry when Russell and Ashland play in any sport.

Yep destroyed our freshman team this year last year it was 42-0 Ashland. Not sure that's a very good indicator. One stud freshman can win those games.

Darn right that's the reason...They like to brag about how they can dominate a lesser program but they have that big yeller streak running down their backs when you start talking about playing "real" competition...And there is nobody no more "yeller" than the 2 goofball brothers, T-CATS and The Prideful One!!

I am taking Russell in a close one at home, with Ashland adding to its impressive collection of regional runner-up trophies. This should be one of the best games in the state.

How often do you polish regional runner up trophies?

I have no clue. I graduated a long time before Johnson Central made it that deep into the playoffs.

rumor mill says the same crew that helped Ashland beat Ironton will be back in town for this one

heard from two people close to defensive coaches that they swapped out boys this week simulating pittman at practice with as many as 10 in the box gearing up for run. gonna be cold and Ashland doesn't pass too much anyways. we will see in 48 hours. I'm betting on the red devils. tony love has showed in close games that he will go for two or 4th down. TJ and boys should win this one. Devils 22 Cats 20

Scrappy, that would be a good plan except for the fact that I heard from sources close to the program that Pittman and Hester won’t play this week. Instead, they may move Stone and Wardle to RB to mix it up and throw Russell off balance and off of their game plan. They may run some wildcat with marushi back there too. Plan is 95% pass, 3% run, and 2% quick punt because they are expecting Russell to play a 10-1 defense. I’m just kidding, I don’t think they will run the quick punt this week.😉

For what it is worth, I also want to complain about the officiating in advance. I can’t believe they missed that holding call and pass interference call. Outrageous. Completely changed the momentum of the game. All the fans on _______’s side agree. It is particularly egregious if you run the film back 8 or 9 times and look real carefully and take the real-time, live reaction time away. I heard that three of them live in the _____ school district too (or did, or thought about it once). Also, _____ only had 4 penalties called on them while _______ had 5. How can ______ expect to compete with that kind of disparity?

In all seriousness though, I’m hopeful for a hard fought, injury free game for both teams. They have both worked hard and are very talented. Both defenses are stout and have excellent personnel. All LBs are legit. The offenses are productive with big/strong lines and with skill kids that have had exceptional seasons. Both schools worked hard in the weight room. Very evenly matched. Should be a dandy of a game with a great atmosphere. Whether you like or hate Ashland, Putnam stadium is a great place to watch a game because the fans are so close to the field. For those seniors for whom this is their last game, best of luck to all of them. It has been enjoyable watching them play and compete against one another the last few years in various sports. Football is a great game with many great life lessons to be learned. Wishing them all much success. I’m going to enjoy this game. Full disclosure, I’ll enjoy it more if Ashland wins though.

Agree with those claiming the elevated challenge in beating a rival twice in a single season...but these two teams seem evenly matched with talent albeit in different capacities (strength vs speed for example). Tomcats at Putnam with all its storied magic, stretching my judgement but think Ashland pulls it off: 17 - 15. Great night for football. :1:

Start the season in the heat and dang near finish the games in the daylight. Not much better then Putnam Stadium on a cool too cold evening in November.
#59
Is this game being streamed anywhere such as MY Town?
#60
According to the My Town Tv facebook they will not. I don't know if Playoff games can be shown online or not. Even if they are allowed to show playoff games I doubt Ashland would allow it.
