Best coach in the 13th?
#1
Who is the best coach in the 13th?
#2
My pick would have to be Coach Patterson
#3
Tony P- Corbin
Jeff Davis- SL
Brad Sizemore- Bell

Would be my top three, but I’d say Tony P is at the top of the 13th.
#4
I like Brad Sizemore's coaching style. He is at the top of the list.
#5
Dinky
#6
Robert Marcum is the best coach in the region..........oh wait we forced him to resign.... Never mind!!!
#7
My top 3 would be
Coach P
Tony Patterson
Jeff Davis
#8
My top 3
1. Coach Jeff Davis (South Laurel
2. Coach Tony P ( Corbin )
3. Coach Robert Marcum ( retired by the Clay County board of education ) unbelievable

Lewis Morris (Middlesboro) has won region championships at three schools. He has also turned Middlesboro around fast. They had only won a few games for 4 or 5 years before he arrived. He won the ALL A and the district last year. I would put him in the top three or four. Maybe not the best but in the top tier. All that have been mention are all good. I can't disagree with any of them.

Michael Jones won one region and four district titles in his first five years at Harlan County - very few have started better than that.
Derrick Akal has made Harlan very competitive and was the best girls coach in the region while he was there.
There are quite a few very good coaches in the region, including those already mentioned.
#11
Both of them coaches in Harlan have been very good. No doubt about it.
#12
Coaches that are successful every year!
Not based on talent.
1. Tony Pietrieski - corbin, wins with average talent and dominates when he has very good talent
2. Lewis Morris- wins every year and kids play extremely hard.
3. Brad Sizemore- reminds me of the coach at Wayne Co. Very calm and kids are always being coached.
4. Derek A. -Harlan Always has his teams competing.
5. Jeff Davis- always has the talent and really should dominate the region but his neighbor has his number when the talent is equal.

6-10: Dinky, Gray, Napier, Jones and Patterson
#13
1. Lewis
2. Dinky
3. Tony P. Corbin

Akal needs to prove himself. Jones was given a loaded team, but has been okay since then. Patterson has lost too many big games to be in the upper names. Napier could be up and coming. Sizemore was given talent at N.L so not much coaching needed. Bell could define his mark on list. Davis has done a good job and brilliance at Clay🤔 ridiculous.
#14
Wonder if Clay County looks at what they did to Robert Marcum 🤔🤔 and see what they got now?

Jones' inherited a 14-15 team and won a region in three years and became the first coach since Ralph Roberts in the 70s to win four straight 52nd District titles to start a career. His "loaded" team has two players in college and one all-stater.

Lets be honest though, the district was not that tough to win those 4 years. boro was 15-15, 5-23,1-29 and 3-22. harlan was 6-20, 14-15, 15-14, 10-15. bell was 17-11, 13-18, 12-17, 14-16. Two winning seasons combined and none of those three played a very tough schedule.
#17
Robert Marcum ask for a 4 year contract and schools DO NOT do contracts except year by year. So Mr. Marcum quit the team! Everyone keeps talking about Clay Co did this and did that, not true. Robert quit the team!
#18
Dinky- plays a very weak to average schedule every year. Average coach unless monster Ash is on his game and then he can beat UK.. JK

That's true - the district was way down, no denying that, but Jones still did a very good job and held his own against the top teams in the region and had a winning record against several of the coaches ranked ahead of him on the list I responded to.

His freshman/sophomore classes are what I was referring to. My mistake on comment. Great guy/player/coach.

He has def done a great job. Took us out in the finals of region.

That's a good example
South and Corbin were both loaded that year. HCHS had to play almost perfectly to win both of those games. Both teams were very well coached and had lots of talent.

Robert Marcum would've been let go no matter what he ask for or wanted because the coach they have now was getting it anyway. And besides that an employee of the coach now is on the school board. 🤔🤔🤔

In the last 8 years boys basketball is 103-138 at Whitley County. Region 48-76. District regular season 16-32, 3-15 last 3 years. District tourney 0-8. Overstays record speaks for itself.
#25
Best coach in the region is coach P and it’s nit really close. Aka is probably the second with the group of Davis and Patterson third. Then you have Dink and Lewis both have won a lot of games but play schedules weaker than water. Coaches to watch are Messer from Barbourville and Marsee at Redbirds. I believe these guys will be hot names in a couple years.
#26
1) P (Corbin)
2) Valentine (North)
3) Sizemore (Bell)
4) Jones (Harlan Co)
5) Davis (South)
#27
Surprised no one is talking about Valentine.

He did resign......however get your facts straight....he asked for a commitment from the board because he knew that the next year would be a down year and most likely a losing record. Behind the scenes if he would have had a losing record they would have fired him and hired Gray anyway. Therefore he resigned. The board sewed into what they have now so therefore they are reaping the results.....or lack thereof.

The way I look at Marcum leaving Clay is he disrespect the kids by saling out. It doesn't matter what people think on how it could have been a down yr at the end of the day Marcum never had any faith or respect for the kids that was coming in so praise coach Gray for that he least had faith in the kids n wanted step up to plate n take the chance when Marcum had to try to get a 4yr contract for reinsurance that he could keep his job of he could get the job done with these kids.lol.. Any body can take a A team with all talent n go win.
