I thought this game would be closer than many anticipated. Just going by what I saw with Belfry in the Raceland scrimmage and what I saw in the Raceland/Pikeville game. I think Pikeville is a very good football team along with Raceland and Paintsville. Frustrates me to hear people try and cheapen the win with all of the "this ain't ur grandpa's belfry" talk. Congrats the the Panthers! Love seeing 1A get big wins like this.

That is correct as Pikeville is 7-12. But the point is Male enrollment 9-12 between Belfry and Pikeville is really not that far off. Belfry is solid 2A by numbers alone now, and Pikeville is on the higher side of 1A. Not 5A to 2A numbers differences like NCC and Highlands which the post used for example.

Highlands is actually a 4A school playing up a class. That means their enrollment is closer to NCC than you listed.

I don’t think anyone is trying to cheapen Pikeville’s win. They earned it. They played with a lot of heart and guts and as far as Belfry goes, you have to go with what you have available. The decision to sit Dixon after he he warmed up was a little confusing to me. I am not saying it was right or wrong, just confusing. He is the type of player though that is a difference maker and would be on any team.

Other thoughts...

Minus 3 in the turnovers with multiple stupid penalties and many a head scratching time management calls and you lose by 1....not bad.

The two biggest non-scoring plays of the game that no one has mentioned... McNamee completes a pass to Raines on 3 and 11 with Grayson Cook draped on his back and Bentley being marked shy of a first down and forcing Belfry to punt. Both big momentum gains for PHS.

The patience of the coaching staff for Pikeville was big. Pikeville started out trying to throw some home run balls and didn’t connect. They settled in to taking what the BHS defense gave them and establishing enough of a running game with Raines to keep Belfry more honest. Then they finally got the matchups they had wanted and set up the pump and go perfectly to Pugh.

Belfry’s lack of organization and discipline late was frustrating. Multiple offsides
penalties and 12 men on the field are head scratchers and the deliberate pace to which they approached their last drive is a head scratcher.

Best wishes to Mounts....he is/was playing his best football and the two that tried to replace him played hard, but let’s be real...one was a safety.

Belfry’s O line got a decent push for the first time this year. Not great but for the most part Belfry went forward. Pikeville did a good job of limiting the huge play. Multiple times Belfry was an ankle or jersey away from going the distance.

It was a great RPI night for the Pirates. They go up .040 from last week. Pikeville stayed basically even in the RPI. How’s this for a top 5 in the 3A RPI.

Lexington Christian and Southwestern both won and Alter from Ohio lost a tight one. Pike Central, Floyd Central, and Magoffin County all won.

First off a big Congrats to Pikeville. They showed everything Belfry didn't last night, grit, determination, poise under pressure.

Second I am going to play unsolicited armchair coach for a second. Coleman should not be under center. I understand the logic behind why he is, but if you look at the last few years he was much too effective as a piece of the hydra rushing attack with Dixon, Bentley, etc. I know the backfield is crowded but it's also really banged up. Bentley has a scare (usually cramps nearly every week), Dixon is currently day to day. I would move Coleman back to taking snaps in the backfield rotating with Hensley at FB. Give more fresh legs back there and put Little Netanyahu (my nickname for Isreal Canteburry) back under center. He was explosive but he was composed, the offense didn't seem to make as many mistakes and you put Coleman back where he can be most effective.

I agree with a lot of that, but IMO an already smallish playbook becomes much smaller with Canterbury because the option attack is just not there and there is no passing.

It is, but by the end of the season if they get everybody healthy we all know they'll likely have a lock down defense.

Belfry may be down and without their stud RB but a win on Pond Creek is a win on Pond Creek and something that is very rare for any visiting team.

Not to take anything from Pikeville because this is a solid win. But Belfry is not the same Belfry were all used to. It’s true Belfry would have had a better chance had Dixon played, but Belfry has some big problems on both sides of the ball.
If these issues aren’t addressed, don’t look for Belfry to go deep in 3A this year. While 1A is definitely competitive this year, I don’t think you can use this game as a measuring stick to gauge 1A by as Belfry is not as sound as most years. 3A as a whole to me seems to be down, on top of losing some of the normal 3A heavyweights. 1A is definitely on the uptick though! 👍

Pikeville took an early punch, battled back, and got the W. Cody Raines is a stud and from what I hear just as good off the field as on it

Belfry needs to get healthy so the offense can get reps together. Both these teams will be just fine come November. Just got to hope we to be some luck of health that hasn’t been there the last two years by then if you’re Belfry.
