Floyd Central Coaching Controversy
#91
Real Badman Wrote:Agreed 100%

I believe everyone can get on board with this statement. There is no place in the world for those second statements.

Just for information sake I never use those words either. I only did here to relay information. I have no problem with rough language at all either

I don't know the man or the situation but most people raise there kids like creampuff's today. Saw the picture of the team and hell YES, a lot of them are out of shape. These kids will go to work for a A-hole someday and guess what? They'll quit or get fired because the can't hack it, no matter how good the pay. They'll blame everyone but themselves. Thin skin is an epidemic in society.

The man sounds old school to me. Wants to win and has won an All A state title. Don't worry Floyd Central, he's out now.
#93
When you have 8 players willing to quit the team. :please: listen to the kids and don’t over look it, we have a problem Houston
#94
The man is more then just a basketball coach for these kids. He is a mentor and life coach on how to be a respectable adult when you grow up. It seems he failed those kids because they wasn’t winning and it was making him look bad .

The old school win at all cost is why you have children dying in practice and your Jerry Sandusky’s of the world .

But hey, this guy won an ALL A STATE TITLE HES BASICALLY THE CLOSEST THING TO GOD.... gimme a break.

“There’s been no Bobby Knight (actions) or any of those things,” Spurlock said. “Nobody getting their nose bit off or nobody getting headbutted or choked. It’s not even remotely close to that. The superintendent said he felt comfortable with three (games) if I felt comfortable with three, and I felt totally comfortable with it. I think based on our policies, it was perfectly fine with me. We’re gonna move on and get past it. We’ll see how that works. It won’t be easy but in the long run it’ll be okay. I’m not real worried about it. It’s just another obstacle you gotta get over.”

Glad he was comfortable with 3 games . Really nice of the superintendent to make sure he was ok with that .
Pathetic .

Wonder how Kevin Spurlock would of reacted if a coach called one of his girls "Fat, Retarded or Slow" or cussed at them when they played ball???

Coaching positions / jobs are not tenured in Kentucky per the KRS. Coaches are hired backed each year by the principle of the school. So this problem can be a easy fix for Greata Thornsberry who can just not hire him back at the end of the school year without reason.

I'm surprised that Floyd County BOE does not have a "Bulling Policy" in place to deal with a problem like this. I'm sure the Board Members are wondering if a law suit may be heading their way.

I read someone comparing Shawn Hager to Kevin Spurlock, what are they thinking. Shawn Hager is a !st class coach and I've known Shawn for several years and never heard him use a cuss word much less cuss at a player, it's not the kinda man Shawn is. Shawn knows he needs to teach a player what to do and how to do it, before he expects them to do it, it's called coaching. When Shawn left Sheldon Clark they lost a Great teacher and coach, they also lost 2 three sport athletes who were also 4.0 students, but most of all they lost a first class role model for the young men at Sheldon Clark.

I found it interesting that Floyd Central has already removed the 8 players names from the KHSAA Floyd Central basketball team roster, but they still list Shawn Hager as a assistant coach, which I think is not correct?

I also find it interesting that Kevin Spurlock has FAILED to complete his required coaching classes with the KHSAA this year which is a requirement to coach, according to their web site. I guess their AD Tony Isaac does not care about KHSAA rules either.

I thought Hager decided to leave his assistant job with basketball before the last school year ended. I know his son didnt come back out for basketball this season after getting some minutes last year.

Finally seeing someone else who doesn't have their heads in the dirt like an ostrich.

Beginning to think I was the only one who saw something wrong with the treatment of "STUDENT Athletes" by "OLD SCHOOL COACHES". WildcatK23 and Ballfan1952 well said.......

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread...... it's been a loooong day for me, but here are my thoughts on the matter of coaching behavior in general.

There are some coaches that better be thankful the social media era wasn't around during their coaching campaigns. I would say around 2010 or 2011 is when we started seeing other incidents like this become more prevalent.
This has been a two-way shift.....
- Kids are WAY more sensitive & willing to come forward with incidents like this.
- Social media has given a voice to incidents like this and gives it the legs to take off and run. This story making the Lexington Herald is proof enough. Even a few years back, I would say less than two or three years ago, this situation would make the message board rounds and barber shop talk as "a few kids quit the team because they didn't like the coach."

Let's say an English teacher yelled and screamed at the students during class like some coaches scream and yell in practice or a game..... the teacher would proabably be fired or at the least suspended for a very long time and the kids would get counseling sponsored by the school, every staff member would have to have some type of new training or professional development course. Not too mention designating a "Safe Space" at the school so the kids can feel safe.

If these allegations are proven to be true.... Mr. Spurlock needs to be removed from his position with the Floyd County B.O.E. My guess is that lawsuits may be on the horizon. Removing him would be a good look for the Floyd County B.O.E. in court, because they can say they removed the hostile element. If lawsuits are to follow and Spurlock is still at Floyd Central, the kids can claim they don't feel safe with him there and shouldn't have to leave their home school. 99 times out of 100, a jury will side with kids on situations like this if an internal investigation proves the allegations are accurate, cause you know as well as I do, that will be presented as evidence.

With how litigious our society is, I have a feeling there is a lawsuit coming no matter what the ultimate outcome is. I think the parents will be sueing regardless. If Kevin Spurlock loses his job, he will sue. Just my opinion.
Sounds like these kids need to toughen up. I read the transcripts of the investigation. Most of the kids changed there stories or backed off. Kids today are plain soft and no drive. I do believe most of these kids fake injuries. Hell most aren’t coach able anyways. If what was said was all true they would have fired him.

Some of these kids are 2 way players who have played football all season with injuries . I don’t think their toughness is an issue .

The Conn boy played football with a cast on his arm. I remember that
Wildcatk23 Wrote:There is a reason this guy moves around so much. That should tell you about everything you need to know.

The last few coaching jobs he has had they paid him to leave the second year and not coach. That in itself should tell ppl something about him. He had to of been in bed with Henry Webb or something to even get the job. Anyone with common sense wouldn’t of even considered him with his record of coaching one year and being paid to leave the next
Blacksmith Wrote:The Conn boy played football with a cast on his arm. I remember that

That was a different Brady it was Brady Jones not Brady conn who played with the cast. Brady conn did something to his knee and had surgery like the 3rd game of the season in football. But I agree toughness is not the issue here calling a kid named is completely uncalled for at any level while that player is a student or otherwise. I’ve bossed plenty of men before and would never call them “retards” “slow in the head” or “fatasses” not any other names. Plain and simple he should never have did any of the above
Ok, I want everyone on admit what levels they have coached at. Ive done every level from grades K to 12. Some of you have no idea what you have to do to try to motivate kids to perform. Some kids only respond to being cussed at, thats all some know. Other kids cant handle it. You got to treat every kid differently. Some of you people arent giving Spurlock any credit at all. Until you have walked in his shoes or some other coaches shoes, dont try to tell someone how to do their job.

.

If you are on a high school team and you will only respond to profanity then you have had some horrible adults coaching you.

Brady Conn had knee surgery three games into the season. His outlook was good and if he pushed it he could have returned for the playoffs. Shawn Hagar told him to take as much time to recover as possible as he didn’t not want him to risk missing basketball as well. He knew there might offers for both sports and wanted the best for him. That’s a coach. For all of you calling him soft he played the last A All game for South Floyd against Sheldon Clark 1-11-17 with SC winning by nine. He sprained his wrist during the very first play. He finished the whole game with only two points but a game high 14 rebounds. He stayed in the entire game because he didn’t want to let his team mates down. This is why he walked when they did. Keep calling him soft.
Never coached basketball but have coached football. From flag all the way through 8th and been around high school for a long time. Never was allowed to cuss at or around kids and anyone who does or says they have isn’t much of a coach. Not saying some words didn’t slip out but was in no way directed towards any kid on my team.
Apparently you have only coached in Mayberry then Darrin. Ive coached teams from very different areas and situations. Everything isnt ice cream and cake like some of you child psychologist may think.
I'd love to keep this one going, but please keep your comments on topic and refrain from attacking people because you don't agree with them.

I did not compare Hager and spurlock I was stating that Hager is old school coach as well kicked multiple players off the team and he didn’t have 8 players walk out on him. He goes abt coaching in a different way than spurlock which obviously shows more respect to the players. So lose the attitude.

I honestly don't think he would have a problem with it. He is a coach himself, and he sees the big picture.

In the past it was said playing sports taught you a lot about life. I don't think that is the case as much anymore. Life will chew you up and spit you and no one will care about your hurt feelings or anything else. Players who played for old school coaches were taught that. They were taught no matter what you needed to push through to the end, never quit on yourself, never quit on your teammates and work as a team. It seems now days kids have learned to quit as a team.

I have taught middle school several years and coached middle school basketball and middle school through high school football. I have never yelled one single time in the classroom, ever. I also had great classroom discipline and was known for my discipline. Before I got a full time job teaching, an elementary \middle school principal used to being me in once to twice a week to run his in school suspension room because I was so effective at discipline. I taught a few BGR's family members, and if they ask around, they can vouch for me on that. As far as coaching, I have never cussed at a player, and I never yelled at a player. Yes, I yelled, but I never yelled at a player. I will be the first to say I was no Phillip Haywood. Every coach has their own style that fits their personality. I never yelled at players. When I did raise my voice, it caught the players' attention though because I didn't do it very often. There is a difference though in helping and yelling at someone.

Kudos to you. There is no reason for a coach to cuss a kid, or even cuss in the presence of a kid he coaches. If cussing is the only way a coach can get his point across, he/she really does not have a command of the English language. There are other words to use.

I have watched Billy's Hicks' career since he started at Evarts in the late 70s. He not only doesn't cuss around his kids, he doesn't allow anyone else to cuss around his kids, including his assistant coaches. I remember when he was at Harlan he kicked the head football coach out of the gym during one of his practices for cussing.

I think this all depends. The kids that I see benefiting the most from sports are not the star players, who are the center of attention. The role players and bench players learn valuable lessens that benefit them for life. Working for the good of the team, not the individual will serve them through their career and family life.

I’ve coached every level and have never cussed at any kid. As a matter of fact, I don’t even cuss in general. My kids still text me asking for advice and guidance even after I’ve stepped away from coaching and moved cities. So, I’m not sure what type of kids you’re coaching or programs you’ve been apart of, but your take is absolutely ridiculous if you think “some kids need to be cussed before they’ll perform”.

This is where we see what the superintendent is made of. We watched previous regimes ruin other sports at other schools in the county by doing nothing when complaints mounted. Let’s see if the last real sign of hope for athletics in Floyd County gets taken down because the new administration refuses to do anything.

Everything surrounding FC new school, where it was built, who the land was bought off of , who was hired as coach is all buddy buddy system. Same as to why he is still there . Justin Holbrook should be the coach up there after winning district back to back . College friends and the buddy buddy system is in full affect.

The microcosm of Floyd County in general why it is in the shape it is in.

No I coached middle school and had a pretty good record and just for the record if someone talked to one of my boys like u claim u did there would of been a fight. Nobody will ever cuss my boys for no reason specially a washed up coach
I never cussed a kid for no reason and I never put any kids down or called them names. May of told them to quit playing like a bunch of pu@@ies. Have used a few words in a timeout. Guess me and you would had to fight then if that was the case. Im sure if you played football, you have surely had a few coaches say something similar to you.
