Floyd Central Coaching Controversy
#61
This just sounds like straight up coaching to me. Idk the exact details but from what I seen it is nothing but a hard nosed coach who wants you to get after it. You have to have thick skin to be an athlete. You aren’t always going to have that non criticizing coach. At a collegiate level it is 10x worse.

Like I said, I stop short of saying these kids are right or wrong because I just don't know the particulars. But part of standing up for what you believe in is dealing with the criticism that inevitably comes your way.

The word "retard" should be blacklisted from everyone's vocabulary, but dare I say I've been called WORSE by coaches. Does that make it right? No. Does that make me a bad person for not calling out my coaches? I don't believe it does.

Spurlock has evidently been disciplined by the administration and will have a chance to continue coaching and modify his behavior moving forward.

If the problem is the way he acts/talks and his bosses told him he can't act/talk like that anymore, the problem should be resolved.

The kids who are being called "soft" now have an opportunity to show up and play their role without dealing with the stuff they protested. Will they do it? Will Spurlock calm down? Those two questions will tell me everything we need to know about this.

You really think the 3 game suspension will be all that happens? This is getting State-wide attention. Matt Jones talked about it on KSR yesterday. School Boards don’t like being in the spotlight in a negative way...

Spurlock and Webb are good friends. I say Spurlock gets another chance if he wants it.

So you're saying Kevin Spurlock may move to Northern Kentucky and take a job up there?

Henry got Kevin the job in Floyd County and could probably get him one in Kenton County too if open. Maybe that’s the best thing for Kevin to get out of eastern Kentucky, beside ain’t many schools left Kevin ain’t been at already lol

Nobody is willing to get crucified in the media for anyone. I don’t care how good of friends they are.

Who knows what will happen .

Id say Kevin will retire at Floyd Central. Hes probably about at the end of his road. Hes to smart to do this crap forever. He wont give in to anyone either.

Several comments on here really make me question the parenting of some posters. There's a difference in cussing a child and cussing at a child. For example: "Get your A$$ up the floor and play defense". As a parent I could accept that. "Your fat A$$ is to F'ing slow to play defense so set your fat A$$ on the bench". As a parent this is unacceptable.

The way some of you posters act, you would accept the coach firing a gun at your child as long as it didn't hit them. "That's just tough love, He will learn to get out of the way next time".

Comments that kids need to grow up, that's exactly what they are trying to do. Coaches are already grown up, NOW ACT LIKE IT!!!

At some point you will realize you don't need to work for this boss and find another job. And if co-workers feel the same way and move on as well, then you can bet your bottom $$ the owner of the company will find a new boss who will treat his employees with respect.

Again there's a difference in being a jerk (making you work overtime or on weekends and holidays) and mistreating people. If you are being mistreated and decide to stay then that's your stupidity.

Spurlock is hard nosed. Like many coaches emotions can get the best of you sometimes. He rubs people the wrong way there’s not denying that. Also there is no denying that everyone knew that before they hired him up there. It’s hard when those kids had never had a demanding coach. Coach Hager has kicked several kids off the football team up there as well from what I hear. But seems like they respond to him fairly well. Maybe a difference in approaches. Hope it works out for all involved.
Ps how can you let the kid come back three times. Imo you’re asking for trouble.

Alot of people in this thread would be terrible coaches.

Eight students in Eastern Kentucky have quit playing for their high school basketball team due to their Board of Education’s handling of alleged grievances against their head coach.

Honey jobs don't just grow on trees. I can't go down to the land of jobs and pick from the job tree.

You have a job to do, do it! End of story. Life will be difficult, get over it. It's no wonder this state is falling apart.

I was cussed “at” as a player. I was told to move by ass.get off my lazy ass, move my f******* ass. I was made to run 3 miles carrying a brick in each hand every day. Never had a problem with any of that..
I was never called “retarded” or “slow in the head”.. I think there’s a difference between the two things

Agreed 100%

I believe everyone can get on board with this statement. There is no place in the world for those second statements.

Back in the late 80's, one of our assistant football coaches and the head coach of our jv team beat a fan up in front of everyone immediately after one of our home games. The guy had it coming, but he beat the guy pretty badly. Funny part was the guy had been asking for it, and the coach informed the other coaches in front of many of the players that it was going to go down. Deputies questioned the coach about what happened, and that was that. He also loved calling us imbeciles, which is one of the nicer names I was called by a coach, when we messed up. Funny thing is to this day I have a lot of respect for him. Whenever i see him, we always talk. He never hurt my feelings when he yelled at me or when he called me names. I guess times have changed. The article said the final straw for the players was Kevin Spurlock getting into an argument with a fan. LOL!!!! WOW!!!

I was at the Ashland scrimmage when he tried to fight a fan during the game. It was really embarrassing. He was yelling in the stands for the fan to come down there to sit him down and to shut him up. I know he was upset at the officiating, but man, keep it together for your players and fans... Just saying. I do hate this for the kids. All kids deserve better then that. JMO

I played for Hillard Howard, you’ll never find another Coach that was “Tough”, “Old School”, and “Hard Nosed” as he was. Now he could chew you with the best of them. But I don’t remember him ever being degrading to me or anyone else and I never heard a curse word come out of his mouth. That didn’t make me respect him less, that made me respect him even more. There’s a difference between being tough and being abusive.

“At halftime of the varsity game while my child was still sitting because he couldn’t dress,” Jo Hall, Hayden’s mother, said. “(Spurlock) threw himself on the floor, grabbed his knee and said, ‘Oh I’m Hayden, I’ve hurt my knee,’ making fun of my child. He’s supposed to be an adult? He’s supposed to be an educator and setting examples for these children? No.”

I take this back, the more i think bout this the more I think Spurlock career is over.

Parents are softer than the kids now! Not sure how some make in the real world. My dad would have went crazy on me if I walked out of the gym because a coach cussed me and made fun of me.

Let’s just address the elephant in the room as well in order to be fair. If FC was winning, would this even be an issue?

There is a reason this guy moves around so much. That should tell you about everything you need to know.
