Best memory playing or rooting for your favorite team?
#1
I have many playing and watching but would like to share my favorite. My Dad is a Tomcat through and through. When Putnam was coming down and being put back together my Dad was by the stadium everyday maybe 2 or 3 times a day collecting bricks and other trinkets he could find. I was also over there my share too but nothing like him. Dad was over there so much the contractor knew him by name. Anyway stadium gets built and they pour the concrete stairs leading to the field. The stairs were screwed up and had to be ripped out and redone. Just so happens Dad and I show up the day they are getting ready to repore the stairs. I said Dad wouldn’t it be cool if we put something in the stairs before they start and he said I’ll go ask. He asked they didn’t care so Dad walks across the street to one of his stash piles and pulls a chunk of bricks and mortar out and walks back over and says let’s put some old in with the new. We grabbed a sharpie and signed the date and our names on the old piece of Putnam and added it to the gravel already in the forms. Here comes the concrete trucks and they pour the new concrete on the stairs and embed the old piece of Putnam forever or until they decide to tear them out again. That was in August of 15 my Dad died in December of that year after the season. That day will be with me forever.

Enjoyed your story. Can't get those moments back

Well T-Cat after reading your story, I'm kind of embarrassed to post mine, but I will. My junior Leslie County came to our field. If I'm not mistakes they had beaten us the two previous meetings by around 40 points. This game should have been no different as they had Greg Couch starting at quarterback and who went on to start at EKU as a freshman. We ended up winning the game by 12-14 points.

I guess it was watching my son's team win a state championship 40 years to the day after my team won one.

Bell County 91 State Championship game! That was a dandy!

My senior year. Playing for Betsy Layne at home against Somerset in what would eventually be my last game as a bobcat. My whole career we fought for respect for the Betsy Layne name because we had always just been a walk over for teams. But against a really good Somerset team playing at home in cold weather in a playoff game I looked around and seen people full in the stands and people lined up along the fences all around the field. For the first time in my career I felt pride and that people cared about the program and that we were actually a football team that had the respect of a storied program. We didn’t get blown out and it was an awesome game with 2,000 people in attendance.

I had two regrets in my career as a bobcat, we never beat Prestonsburg and we didn’t win Betsy Layne their first playoff game.
If you need any assistance or want to report a problem feel free to PM me and we will get it taken care of!  Thank you for choosing to be apart of the BGR community!

There is film out there of me blocking a punt with my face Jr year.

Full dive to the left to block the punt and foot to ball, ball to face, right under the facemask.

If JV games count, my freshman year I tackled the umpire by accident.

Mine would have to be watching Estill County All-State Linebacker Robbie Wiseman. No game or situation stands out, but it was just a pure joy to watch him play the game although it was a LONG time ago.

Watching both my sons play in the the state championionship games for 2 different schools.Dalton played qb for 2013 Williamsburg team that lost to Mayfield, and Camron play qb for the 2017 Corbin team that lost to Boyle winning would have made it better but still proud of them and the careers they had at each school. I think both of them ended up being the winningest qb's in their schools history.

Best team memory is 1982 playoff game with Highlands beating CovCath in playoffs in overtime. Great game, great atmosphere. Personal favorite was making a game winning TD. But neither of those compare to the amount of nerves and joy I got from watching my daughters compete, 5 team state championships, individual state runner up, multiple top 5 individual finishes, all state teams and both earning D1 scholarships. I always tell younger parents to sit back and just enjoy it because it flies by.

I’ve got a lot of great memories as a player and a fan but this is the ones that are popping out right now. After losing in overtime to MC Napier their coach put his arm around me and said, “I wish I had 11 players like you.” Later that year we played #8 Adair County and Coach Peck (who I always thought was a prick until this) ran over to me as soon as the horn blowed and said, “You’re the best defensive player I’ve ever coached against.” We lost both those games, but that sure helped lessen the pain of the loss.

My Top 3

1. Of all the Belfry games I have attended and the State Title games I've been to..there's nothing like that First State Championship in 2003. The pride and joy we all shared in that moment...there were hugs and tears of joy. I'll never forget the guys that I went with that made it all the ore special as they had all lived through the long wait and finally gotten what our community had been so close to getting. Those guys have passed on but I"ll never forget how we all felt walking out of there State Champions!

2. Belfry at Corbin (2016) Belfry down 17-7 at the half. Won 42-17. Probably one of the best road game atmospheres I have ever been in.

3. Belfry defeats defending Class A Champ Pikeville and stops their 42 game winning streak (1989)

Your dad was killed in a car accident correct ?

it was 2007 or 2008 the game was Hazard vs Perry Co Central. my little cousin set the state record for the most sack in a game. he had 12 or 13 sacks in that game, but it could have been more.

Of all the accomplishment and wins I had in high school, nothing comes even remotely close to watching my boys play. That is the single best moment for me that I currently get to relive over and over.

There is something special about your programs first title. Great memories there.

(For the record it was a 33 game winning streak rather than 42 but they were impressive Pikeville teams in that three year run. )

Have to agree with Nut, I also played and loved the game but nothing compares to watching your son play. Now I get the great feeling of watching my grandsons play which is all together another High I get to enjoy. I have been very blessed in my life getting to see and enjoy this.

There are a few as a Boyle County alum.

1. Playing days I will think of one for each year. 1978 beating Harrodsburg and Gus Parks 17-0 the year after being drubbed by them 60-0.

1979 beating Somerset after having not played them for years. Down 17-7 at the half we came back to win 27-17 dominating the 2nd half. Beating Danville on the last play of the game is 1b.

1980 beating Somerset again after trailing this time 24-13 with 10 minutes to play. Won 27-24. 1b was beating Harrodsburg 27-0 and knowing that after they ran it up 60-0 our freshman year they never scored a point vs Boyle the next three seasons.

As a fan of the Rebels the first title was great but I lived in VA by then. I came back twice in the "run." Saw them beat Rockastle in 2002 and the next year got to broadcast with my good friend Steve Bertram again in the Semi-Final contest vs Paducah Tighlman. There is no way the talent on that Tornado team should have lost but Boyle as a unit was just too much, 35-21.

I've got a bunch but don't want to share and ruin my anonymous status. I've got too many people to troll. I have some great memories, some of the great ones involved disappointment on the biggest stage but I regret none of it. This sport reveals character in so many ways. It builds strong young men better than any other sport.

I loved watching the birds when they played Johnson Central.
