IMO Corbin could possibly be better. Estep a year stronger and faster...More explosive fast offense maybe. I wonder if he's going to be QB or a B back?

It's just I remember how special that junior class, well, now, senior class this year was when they were in middle school. They weren't the juggernaut Belfry maybe was with that team Belfry had 2 years ago, but overall I felt Corbin had so much skill on the field, skill kids out the wazoo! I didn't know Estep's name back then, but I knew what number his jersey was and also many of the others. There were a pair of twins I think that were studs, etc.. I remember them dismantling everyone in 8th grade, including Bowling Green. I know they'll be VERY good this year, if not better than last year, they'll not fall off much. I am prepared for watching "the worst" (IE them being better), and I'm hoping, at least when we play them, they are at their worst. I think for 2 years in a row they have claimed they had their worst game against us. Hopefully that trend continues, and we finally take them to the last few minutes of a 4th quarter. Some schools may not understand when "not getting the running clock put on you" is a victory. Our coaches would never say that, but as a fan I don't mind a bit telling it like it is. I just hope to somewhat compete, again.

As a runner at QB, I'd rather face Sizemore than Estep, unless it's inside the 10 yard line. That's when Sizemore became Earl Campbell. But Estep seems to have remarkable strength himself, just a lighter package. But so much quicker and elusive, one of the top athletes in 3A up to 5A I guess. Not knowing much about baseball and hearing how good he is I may actually be downplaying his ability. I don't know them personally but what I see being hard to replace with Sizemore was his heart and leadership. He seemed to be a very vocal leader at times on the field. I saw him take so many hits as a QB and still stay in the game. I don't think Estep could take that much punishment, BUT, he's so quick and elusive he's probably not going to take a clean shot. I'd image with baseball he's got a heck of an arm. Darned if you do darned if you don't against Corbin when they are "up". And Corbin's rarely ever "down". I don't know what exactly makes someone a "mountain team" or sure but I saw my school put in there by someone. I don't think we are anywhere on the top 10 personally. We are a solid team is what I'd call us. Mountain to me starts with Belfry (as they'll quickly tell you), Johnson Central, Corbin (but I don't really see the mountains there), Bell is on a darn mountain, and I guess Pulaski would be since it extends into the Cumberland region, and I was at their Walmart when a bear was trapped in there...:-D Doesn't get more "mountain" than that does it? Wayne is almost flat, so mountain? IMO this is Wayne's last year as a competitive team for awhile. I like Shawn over there and afraid they are about to take some flatout beatings after this season. After a coach works so hard to buildup a football culture, then they merge schools and throw you in 4A (although it's pick your poison in almost all classes) and then your athletic director before you basically wanted football to die...I don't know. I respected what Wayne did, what coach did over there. I think he'll be retiring fairly soon, at least as coach. We'll see I guess. He'd make someone with the talent a good tough minded coach if there's an opening.

Wayne County has higher mountains than Johnson County. Shawn can come over to Whitley County to coach

I saw that someone listed Powell earlier as a top ten team in the mountains. 😂 while last year at the end of the year that might not have been crazy to me right now. It is far fetched they are gonna have to count on alot of young guys and they will have a rocky road not to mention the change in head coach may throw more stumbling blocks in the road but other than that agree with most other predictions I've seen.
1. Johnson central
2. Corbin
3.belfry
4. Pikeville
5. Paintsville
6. Ashland not sure what they lost but they beat jc once last year.
7. Casey
8. Floyd central
9. Pulaski
10. Prestonsburg I look for coach brewer to make Prestonsburg a real team to be trifled with.

The top 3 are JC, Corbin and Belfry. Not sure which order. Knox and Somerset would be my next two if you consider the Bunnies a Mountain team. Knox the team to beat this year in their district after graduation hit Wayne and Rock hard. Somerset could be top 5 team but with a few L's on the schedule. Tough, tough schedule. I'll throw Ashland and Harlan Co. in the mix after that but are not as familiar with what they have returning. Good luck this season to all the Mountain teams!

I think Somerset will be tough this year. If they get their offense rolling they will really be dangerous.

When did a team West of I-75 become a Mountain school? For that matter, when did Ashland and Raceland become teams from the mountains? I get that Ashland and Raceland are close to the area but technically they are not in the mountains. . And Somerset is definitely not. If we are going to include these teams in the mix, my 1. will be Trinity and my 2. will be St X LOL

Mountain polls have always been based mostly on the WYMT coverage area, which extends from Martin Co. (Sheldon Clark) all the way to Pulaski Co., and went as far north as Estill, Powell, Morgan Co. to the Tennessee and Virginia border..

True. But his point has always been mine. Somerset, Wayne County, Ashland or Russell had never been called Mountain teams until it became a good way to bolster the Mountain Football persona.

When most counties consolidate to one high school, the word "Central" is often incorporated into their name, i.e. Letcher Co Central, Perry Co Central etc.
Harlan County is just that!!

The mountain football persona is not in need of bolstering, it is fine. The teams you mention are good enough, but how many mountain football titles do they account for in modern times? But to be honest, I don't consider them mountain teams either.

Hatz Wrote:So why would Ashland and/or Russell be included?
I've never known Ashland, Raceland, Russell, Greenup, and the rest of the teams to be covered by WYMT unless they're playing a team from the coverage area... Those are just my thoughts... The Pulaski teams have always...

WYMT has extended for most what is considered the mountains into Somerset and to the north toward Ashland.
For me, the mountains will always be the 13th, 14th and 15th regions only - which is the way the Courier-Journal described the mountain teams in the old days.
