Since I could care less about a teachers pension, please correct me if I'm wrong, but why are these people still whining?
From what I can tell, pretty much the only thing that has changed is they can't horde sick days (neither can any normal person) and new teachers, not existing ones, have to start a flexible spending retirement plan.
Am i missing something here? Imean teachers literally get about 4 months off a year. From the looks of it, bevin just saved your retirement since it was wasteful spending libs who destroyed it.
What am I missing? If the continue to cause a disturbance of school days should those teachers be fired for insubordination?

Public sector unions should be outlawed and teachers who strike should be fired. No exceptions.
Politicians cannot be trusted to negotiate contracts with unions or other groups representing large voting blocs like the NEA. Contracts between self serving elected officials and public sector unions are the reason that governments at all levels are going broke across the U.S. The ratio between working Americans and retirees is continuing to shrink and generous public sector retirement benefits are continuing to expand. That is not a sustainable system.

^^ Hence the unholy alliance between organized labor and Democrats. Generally speaking, union people can give you the entirety of their political awareness in one breath, "Democrats are for the working man." Of course the reality is, though Democrats did and do use union labor to build government funded projects (so do Republicans BTW), unions for the most part are merely vote piñatas. And while it is the tax payer who provides the funds for those government projects, (which if managed correctly is not a bad thing) union membership sends a treasure trove of donations to their Democratic representatives for reelection purposes. Politicians then take a bow for their labor oriented watch care, and though the truth is that such matters are actually the benefit of free enterprise, union bosses in bed with politicians nonetheless take the bait, hook, line and sinker. Democrats have never been averse to taking credit where it is not due. Take the issue of civil rights for slaves for example, it was the Dems who resisted Republican Abraham Lincoln's efforts to free them, but you see who claims now to be defenders of black men.
Teaching is considered to be a profession, like a doctor or a lawyer. To say such people need union representation is a little ridiculous in my mind.

I appreciate these comments. I am very close to several teachers in this area, and I have really heard some very negative things lately about this bill and how it was passed.
Two items that have really surprised me are the way this bill was passed (attaching it to a sewage bill) and that the employers are $14B in deficit of funding their retirement.
As I understand it, the teachers have NO authority in whether or not that want to participate in salary deferral contributions or the amount they contribute. It's called "automatic enrollment". The employer is bound to match that by a certain percentage. Not only has the government taken $14B (that's BILLION not million), they have also not done their contribution as bound by the contract.
If I understand these two items correctly, then I think it's wrong.

Which then leads to the question. Where was the rooster in charge of making sure that the fox was not taking eggs from the hen house for the last 30 years? One has to wonder, was the rooster and the fox in cahoots splitting the profits by selling the stolen eggs all this time? But the hens all believe the rooster when he says “ I have been your friend and all along I was watching out for you, let’s all get that evil fox now”. And the hens all cried out “fear not our savior of eggs and our friend, for we art with thou , and farmer Brown will surely bail us out of this mess.”

nicker:
You are correct about that!!! Back before certain regulations were approved by the DOL (I cannot remember the acronym.....ERISA?), it was legal for companies to take the gain from certain types of retirement plans. So if an employee contributed $1,000 in 1970 and it gained up to $5,000, the employer could legally take $4,000 back as long as it was spent on the company's facilities. I know two in our area that built and renovated millions of dollars for their buildings. I also know some employees that worked and contributed for 30+ years and retired on $200/month.

I can understand that outrage granny.
I think once again, the media is at fault for not putting the blame where it should lie. Dems wasteful spending over the past 30 years while leading this state is what led to this.
It would be nice to see a list of exactly where and what that money was spent on and who voted for what over that time span.
Why do politicians find it so hard to use earmarked money for what it was intended for?
At the end of the day it is hard to publicly argue with our educators over this issue without looking like an ass, but I also expect our educators to be intelligent enough to place the blame where it lies. Going to Steve beshears house and protesting his private life would be a good start.

What scares me the most about this is seeing just how much the teachers take to their unions. I know some teachers that are conservative yet are jumping all over Bevin over this issue. If anything, and I'm sure TRT will have something to say on this because it's something we've discussed before, it has once again exposed how people only truly care about something if they think it will hit their pocketbooks. Where is this kind of effort on abortion, where we have lost nearly 60 million children since 1973? It's truly saddening to see this cultish, and yes, as Bevin called it, thuggish behavior coming from teachers. The liberal ones, I expect this from. But the ones that I see that are pro-life, defend marriage, and have Christian values, this is disappointing to see them sit back on those issues while going crazy when something hits their pocketbook. While this all was going on, Kentucky has been in the process of passing a dismemberment abortion ban. It passed the House 71-11 with 18 people not present, it passed the Senate 31-5. My representative was one of the two that was not present - yet very few people of the teachers I know who are strongly pro-life knew that or even probably cared about it.
The Democratic Party is using this opportunity to get teacher votes and they are biting the bait hook, line, and sinker. West Virginia had a big fight over this recently, although their issue was related to a pay raise and not to pensions. The Republicans navigated a bill that gave them the 5% pay increase without raising taxes in any form and they forced a lot of spending cuts by doing that. The teachers unions STILL bashed the Republican Party after getting them a raise 2% higher than what they initially requested.
I am a CPA, and starting out in this field one doesn't just make a lot of money off the bat. A first year accountant probably makes in the $40,000 range and doesn't get summer off, Christmas vacation, and they are busting their tails working 50-60+ hours per week from January - April. My first job I made $37,000 per year and did that. Did I complain and whine? No. I busted my tail and continued to work to get better. This issue isn't pertaining to a raise like in WV, but rather making sure their pensions are not being cut. I get the concern, but actually look into the issue yourself before going on this big emotional rant after reading an e-mail that was sent out.
If these people actually kept up with politics, they would know that this stuff happens all the time with bills being slid in together. Look at the omnibus bill that just passed. Not that it's right, but a lot of times 2 - 3 bills might be crammed into one when you get deep into a legislative session. Apparently, nobody on either side has read this bill. Sure, it's fair to question the intention of it, but I find it funny how the Republicans haven't read the bill but yet how are the Democrats so sure that this is some teacher-hating bill if they haven't read it themselves?
What I like about Matt Bevin, he does not back down. I hope this doesn't cost him re-election next year. Unfortunately I am seeing people come from every corner bashing him on this - from "conservatives" to liberals to people who I see that typically don't care one way or the other about politics.

I can answer this one, he retired last year collecting his retirement that others wont see. He was also on the front line with 3 administrations, offering up any "eggs" he had. He agreed for the state to take funds out of the pension. In fact he was in committees pushing for the state to do it. Yet the Education department, continued to give him raise after raise after raise, and the teachers and administrators in the school district just sat on their hands and let it happen.

Whooo-eee, do you all ever have this one right! And the next AND WORST, chicken to come home to roost will be when all the government give-aways associated with ObamaCare stop, and Kentuckians are suddenly stuck with the full tab. Kentucky you will recall, is the flagship for free health care, and Kentucky was strictly all-in from ObamaCare rollout to certain failure. Only problem is and it's an old one, there is NO such thing as a 'free lunch.' People have been using that phrase in trying to get that simple truth across to this nation's citizenry since the 1930's, and Milton Friedman made it even more famous in 1975. And we STILL can't wrap our heads around the truth of it. But to this twinkie stuffing, Mountain Dew guzzling, zombie-kill-count obsessed generation, you might as well be speaking in an unknown language.
And there is another term thrown around all the time that the people love to ignore as well, 'unfunded liabilities.' State and federal government know that there is a calamity looming on this nation's horizon, that will likely make the depression days of 1929 to 1941 look like easy street. And you can bet that Ol Steve Beshear and his predecessors knew full well they were running the affairs of the people of Kentucky, in a completely irresponsible manner. The only other option it would seem to me, would have to be that they really were as inept as they seemed. But I believe it is possible that these guys put party ahead of state, just like federal politicians put party ahead of country. As the result, taxes are at some point going to skyrocket in Kentucky. And unsustainable pensions and welfare entitlements, to include ObamaCare, will bankrupt this state. Frankly, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that Governor Bevin has suffered more than a few nights laying awake about it. The total sum of unfunded liabilities this nation faces is a number nothing less than staggering. 220 Trillion. "There is no question that the following policy is bipartisan. Democrats and Republicans in Congress are completely agreed that the following information should not get out to the American people, namely, that the present value of the United States government’s off-budget liabilities is over $200 trillion."https://dailyreckoning.com/205-trillion-...abilities/
You can bet DJT knows what we Americans face, and IMHO, this nation would do well to reject the ridiculousness of the politically correct left, vote the big dogs of the CBC, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Adam Schiff et-al out of office. And pray diligently for the Lord to give us a second chance. At any rate, and should we lose this President to said ridiculousness, the establishment go-to, of kicking the can down the road will only make our fall more thunderous a proposition.

I agree that teachers dont have it that bad, and have plenty of time off, but what you are missing is regardless that most jobs dont allow this, and regardless that they certainly have plenty of time off is they where promised these things when they took the job. If the state wants to do away with it for future hire ins then fine, and it will be up to future employees whether they take the job without all the sick time benefits or not, but when you have someone sign on the dotted line for a contract, and they agree to work for you under the terms of that contract, how is it morally right for the state to say we are no longer going to honor our promise, just because we are the government, and can do what we want. I signed on the dotted line at another state job, and under my contract it says i cannot strike, or protest, im expected to honor my end or i will be put in jail on the other side of the bars, so why shouldnt the state be obligated to honor the things im supposed to get.

The state government better tread lightly on what they try to take away, if they get to cute the US Supreme court will be brought into things, and the state will lose. The state has whats called an inviolable contract with their employees. A few other states governments have tried to change things on their employees, i know California was one of them, and the state lost when it went to the supreme court, because its deemed unconstitutional to try to take things away thats in an inviolable contract.

Don't know how they are going to raise the money, but last I heard they only have like 15 percent of the money they need to pay retirees for the next 30 years. Definitely a bad situation, can't remember the amount bevin said it was but somewhere in the 40 billion range I think. Like I said Cali was in same boat and decided retirees wouldn't get their retirement, supreme court said otherwise. Guess they better legalize pot, casinos, or something to get the money, cause they will have to pay it. I'm sure the regular Joes will get taxed to death if they don't try any of those type things, cause we all know the politicians ain't going to give it up out of their pockets. A shame the amount of money that has been mismanaged for decades, and not a single politician will spend a day in jail for it. I look for them to do furloughs again soon like they did a few years ago again, where they make workers take off a few days, so they can not pay them for a week. Makes it dangerous with us being short handed but why should Frankfort care it ain't them in danger. Wouldn't suprise me if they start releasing a lot of felons from prison so they can shut some prisons down, and save money. You wouldn't believe the amount it costs to run 1 prison, and we have a dozen running. I was told what the utility bill was time for 1 prison for a month and it's insane.

They are not immune to bankruptcy due to their own negligence..Teachers, regardless of their own elitists opinions of themselves are not a protected species. For a profession that touts their own supreme intelligence, they sure haven't looked very intelligent, while they for the last 30 years stood there and watched their liberal politician crooked friends (i.e. Rocky Adkins, the Andy Beshear gang) and their own union bosses rob them blind. And are now again blindly putting their hopes, dreams, and support back into the ones that stole it from them to begin with while they watched every single moment of it. Yeah, that's real smart, isn't it? Of course when you place the burden on those who had no part in this mess to begin with to bail you out, well, who cares? We can just go on status quo for eternity?

Right on. People should follow the left's example of adjudicating morality, in activist fashion from the bench! Take for example the legal, and constitutional referendums that took place at the state level, in which traditional marriage was upheld as being between one man and one woman, by an average 70 percent margin. Activist courts merely overturned the will of the people in all those cases and voilà , now a person can marry his pet if he wants to, I suppose.
And I must say I agree with you about lying politicians too. I know I'm STILL waiting for my 2500 dollars a year savings on my health expenses. Because you know ObamaCare "won't cost the taxpayer one dime." Right? :please:

This has been very interesting to read from my friends on the Right. They seem to forget a few things so in light of common interest: lets take a look
1. Senate has been controlled by the Republicans since 2002... takes both houses to pass a budget. Now does anyone know what the pension was at before this took place? 125%. Coincidence or not?
2. Bevin was elected with 17% of the Commonwealth of Kentucky voting for him.
3. Bevin did not lie, he said he was going to "fix" the system. Good for him, people have spoken and have not liked the way he wants to "fix" the system.
4. Teachers have to have a Masters degree, many teachers have a degree that is passed that. The pay cut is made up with the pension.
5. Teachers do not receive S.S. So other groups with a 401 K will ultimately go back to Social Security system as a supplement, but the teachers do not have that. BTW, that is a federal law.
6. Speaking of Social Security most folks do not realize that teachers will only get to draw 30% of their spouse's social security. The other group that falls into this category is the Railroad workers.

Gee thanks tvtimeout.
While you're in the mood to enlighten everybody on all this stuff could you please explain to us, how all you've expounded upon above relates to the mismanaged money that was supposed to be in the pension fund in question? The money was appropriated or otherwise withdrawn from the earnings of said teachers, was it not? So where is it?

Nothing more than a tax on the poor/ignorant? Since 1989 the KY Lottery has brought over 5 billion dollars back to the state of Kentucky, including around 3 billion straight back into education to fund scholarships and grants including KAP, KTG, and KEES. So "they" were right.
