JC was nothing until Matney got there. They produce a few good players who had success in college, but success as a team just wasn't there very often. I'm not saying he is coming to Pburg, but it's not like he can't turn Pburg into a powerhouse as well. JC tradition before Matney vs Prestonsburg's tradition? I'd take Prestonsburg any day of the week.

I would be shocked to see this move especially with the massive success Matney has had the last 3 years at JC. But I can see the lower competition and huge sum of money at least making him have to think about it.

Salyersville is the end of the parkway in the mountains, not Prestonsburg.

He seems pretty set at Pikeville especially with the talent they have coming through right now.I think it would a great hire. No idea on the interest in either party. But, if I am Prestonsburg it is a call I would make.

True in signage only. Driven it a thousand times. 114 IS the Parkway as much as the rest.

I do not know if he is going to switch schools or not. He is either going to PBurg or he used them to gain a little leverage where he is now. I could see either. However, I do know it is his to turn down and that it is a pretty sweet deal.

^^^This.
Within the past 3 hours, Iâve heard comments that make me think heâs coming...AND....comments that make me think he is not. Both from reputable sources.
And you are right: it is his to turn down or accept.

I hope the Blackcats sign their man. Time for excitement to return to the program. But it does seem like they will get a good coach no matter what.

Once you get to the spring (and, beyond); telling your current school and KIDS on the team that you are LEAVING make(s) an already hard decision even harder; especially if you have a chance to be pretty good in the coming year at your current school (say what you want, but that factors in).
Jobs (many) come open every year, but great jobs don't. All factored in..is this another job or is it a great job? There are arguments for both sides of that coin depending on who you talk to.
Whether who it's been offered to is using this for leverage at his current school or legitimately thinking about taking this job doesn't matter to me. Good for them. Coaches (and their families) give up so much for others, so I have zero issues with them looking out for "#1" from time to time.
If leaving every other year for a job (unless they are bonifide climbs up the ladder, in particular...in $$$), then that's a different story.

Letâs be honest, if they land Matney it is the biggest hire in EKY in a very very long time. He was successful at Sheldon Clark but nothing like what he has built at JC. If they have to go another route, time will tell if it is a good hire.

I hope they get him. He is their best option but I guess I have more faith in there being others that can step into that program and do a great job as well...

Matney would be the hire that would get the community fired back up about Blackcat football again.

Write it down.
For the 2018 season Jim Matney WILL be the coach for Johnson Central and Brandon Brewer WILL be the new coach at Prestonsburg.

As of now, I agree with this.

Jim Matney showed serious interest in this job. His reasoning is and probably always will be a mystery. Was he actually considering leaving or was it a simple leverage play.. only he knows.

Did brewer play for Tony Burchett? Did Tony Burchett play for Pburg? Or am I dreaming this all up

Brewer played at Powell. Coached under Tony Burchett for a few seasons before being named head coach.

JC is on the verge of moving to 5a. They're pretty lucky they didn't with this latest alignment. I don't think JC, or any mountain team for that matter, will be able to compete in the new 5a for a while. That's the only reason I could see him leaving.
04-02-2018, 01:32 PM
I don't think that Matney is serious about taking the job. I think this is a smart move on his part, to get a pay increase, or a little more leverage. Johnson Central is the second best program in the mountains and arguably the best program in the state in 4A. So, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me why he would be interested in the Prestonsburg job. Don't get me wrong, Prestonsburg is a good job, but I don't think it is near the job it was ten or fifteen years ago. If things don't change, regardless of who is named the new coach at Prestonsburg, the next two or three years could be some of the weakest teams in program history. All of the talent has left and from what I'm hearing, a lot of the remaining talent is leaving, due to the firing of Derossett. Personally, I think Brandon Brewer will get the job and deservingly so. Anyone who can turn Powell County into a regional contender, is one heck of a coach in my opinion.

I think they need to go after home grown Prestonsburg coach. Nathan Leslie would be good one.
