Here is telling stat, John DeRossett has lead 9 different teams to play for the Regional championship game in his 22 years as Head Coach. Before he was head coach, Prestonburg had only 7 other appearances in that In their entire history. The people at Prestonburg need to ask themselves the question, who would want the job after they have treated most successful coach in there history so poorly. I might want to add, he was a district champion in his final season.

Not according to the website it isnât. Which Id heard that from a reliable source and laughed at it; then was told to go look for myself and sure enough.
7,500 is just that. Middle of the back if not in the bottom half to be honest.

Pete Greene is the leading candidate. Odds on favorite to be hired.

More of the same with Pete as the coach.

The pay is the reason most coaches in Floyd county coach more than one sport.. Hell, Spurlock at Floyd central coaches about 3-4 different things.. I know basketball, softball, bass fishing and Im pretty sure theres more..

Rumor has it... a certain AD has reached to a current asst. coach at Whitley. Have heard that the talks went well, and both sides seem to be interested in each. Coach said it will be a prime time job with the new realignment. Also said he need to fill out the current administration at one school and the new new super to be named at the other before making a move

I attempted to find coaching salaries for several schools in EKY for comparisons and unfortunately, most of districts do not have that information on their websites (or it's impossible to find).
Here is what I did find.
Pikeville Ind. Roughly $8,000 (based on years experience and the last report I could find was from 13-14 fiscal year)
Floyd Co. $7,500
Lawrence Co. $6,000
Pike Co. $3,500
Johnson Co. ?
Paintsville ?
Magoffin ?

Floyd is $3,200 according to the link I posted & I've heard that from more than one reliable source.
Lawrence County's is 6K + extended days. Rank 1 with 10-15 years makes it a 10K or so job & obviously with extended days; that means you constantly are getting a raise each year since your daily wage goes up.
I'd be HIGHLY shocked if that wasn't the case for Pike County as well.

Regardless of alignment...unless something drastically changes in the economy and football falls apart at the other surrounding schools...(.ala, Paintsville, Johnson Central and even Floyd Central).....not seeing anything indicating this would be a âprime time jobâ. P-burg has a rich history....but they appear to be in full decline at this point in time. If that decline is largely on Derossett....it will be interesting to see how the program reinvents itself under new leadership.

The fact is with the "decline" and soft minded parents sending their kids to another district Prestonsburg "declined" to 7-5 with 4-0 in the district and a playoff win. Wonder what kind of program they would have with better admin and better parents not trying to stab him in the back?

Derossett's overall record the past 4 seasons was 28-19. If you take away 2014's 10-3 record... the past three years it's been 18-16.
Thus the decline comment. With P-burg's history...I definitely consider that a decline. Have traditionally been know for good, hard nosed football

Yeah, and the grade school program have kids that don't wont to play for him and I don't know what that reason may be that they don't want to play for him but the administration is a little too late with this firing because the talent pool already left for Paintsville.

Not to get off topic but I wonder if he will coach elsewhere next year. Also where will James DeRossett land?

I guess there is around 40 sets of soft minded parents in Prestonsburg then, because that is close to the number of athletes that have left and went to Johnson Central, Pikeville, and Paintsville. To me that number tells me all I need to know about the problems at Prestonsburg! That many kids don't leave without good reasons!

Talk to some of these parents. They have their reasons. I won't spread those kinds of tales on here but it was as much off the field as on it, maybe more so.. just ask, they will all be more than willing to share

But based on what I’ve heard, yes $7500 is about in the middle of the pack state wide. Pic is attached for reference for Floyd County from your link.

Perhaps I did visits the link which is where I got the 3200 from, but the actual stipend was on the 2nd page.
Iâd heard it was in the neighborhood of 3-4K; I go look and sure enough (despite it saying âsponsorâ - whatever that means or even is? But went with it.)

I don't understand the debate on the pay. It clearly says $7,500 for "Football Head"..... and $3,200 for "Cheerleading Varsity Sponsor" (which means cheer coach)

The football assistant coaching pay is garbage, though. That part I know I didnât slip up and read wrong. Lol

My thoughts on this thread/Prestonsburg football right now.
What has Prestonsburg ever won that's been so spectacular? They've had a lot of talent that's went through and no rings to back it up. Good seasons, but not great seasons. John started off well at Prestonsburg, but has been in a steady decline for about 8 years. He's kept alumni from having part in the program which has led to lost interest. 50 kids have transferred to different schools. No one was welcomed around the program unless you were one of the good ol' boys that did whatever John said. He treats his players like dirt, and it's worse when they no longer play for him. (Besides last year because he knew he had to change to keep his job). He basically has "ran" the school for the past several years until the new Principal has taken over. His former players are even coaching at different schools. I can vouch for one of them at FC.
I don't think this is a very attractive job right now. The program is in bad shape and it will be evident in seasons to come. No feeder program talent and just a handful of players that can make a difference for next year (#1 is a beast).
He has an above average winning % and has only been to 1 state championship, and is
3-6 in regional championship games. 22 years. Too much talent, and not enough trophies. That's pretty average to be a football powerhouse like everyone claims. But what do I know. I think a young coach like Jarred Jarrell isn't a bad idea.

Lawrence co is 15 extended days. Puts that around an additional $3,750- $4,500 depending on rank and years.
With Pike County, I couldn't find anything on extended days and as someone posted about it being $5K. Can you post a link or document with that. Their district website is outdated and trash.
A lot of districts in central KY got rid of extended days for coaches and just bumped the salary up into 10K.

That's the biggest downfall for male Pburg athletics as a whole IMO. And thats been the case for over a decade.
