Good list...a few other names to consider:

Ed Miracle (Lynch East Main)
Tom "Chalk" Stapleton (Middlesboro)
Tim Saylor (Cumberland, Pineville, Cawood)
Ron Cain (Cumberland, Somerset) or John Cain (Somerset)--if you consider Somerset a "mountain" school (I tend not to).
Walt Green (Corbin, Middlesboro)

Definitely Miracle

Glad someone mentioned Walter Brugh

I have a question regarding this list. Do accomplishments outside of the mountains count? If they do then it really strengthens Larry French's resume. He has won two state titles outside the mountains.

You made me mad right off the bat. I'm not sure if I'd even put the West Virginia coach in the top 10.

Dudley! Dudley! Dudley!

Any Top 5 has to include Miracle.

He also loved all sports and coached a lot of them. Lynch is like a ghost town now, but I still love to visit there sometimes.

what have Jim Matney done to be on this list, nothing. I would put Hillard Howard at #1. I would take off Jim Matney and add Mark Dixon.

I erase most of the list and insert other names :biglmao:

Can't go wrong with the four H's. Matney is making his mark for sure, but it would have to be a toss-up between he and Ed Miracle, jmo. Ed miracle developed that Lynch team into a force back in the day. Good list, btw.

I've heard a lot about Miracle, but he was before my time so I didn't feel comfortable with adding him. Yes, from what I've seen, he probably could slide right into my number 5 slot.

Ed Miracle won 4 State Titles from 1959 to 1968. All in Class A when there were only three classes.

He was Runner Up another 4 times.

In comparison Howard had 3 titles and two Runners Up.

Holcomb has three state titles.

Hilton has had a great career. State Titles at Bell (2) and Bourbon (1).
But that really doesn't compare to Miracle.

Haywood is the only coach that can compare to Miracle IMO.

Look at what johnson central was before matney got there. Look at what Sheldon Clark has become since he left. He build johnson Central from one of the worst teams in the state to one of the best. If he hadn't been in the same class with dale mueller all those years he would be much higher on the list.

A lot of teams could say that.
#22
If it weren't for mueller, a lot of teams would be saying that about matney. Either way, the guy has won a title and built a program from nothing. I think he deserves to be on the list. Why don't some of you all post your own list instead of critiquing everybody else's.

Went back to look at this long held claim by JC supporters.

2011 it was 67-21 so I don’t think it was that year.

2010 they lost to HHS by a TD. Probably the closest to making that claim true. Still the Eagles would have to beat good Harlan Co n Christian Co teams.

2009 they lost to HHS by 21. They also weren’t a zoo in vs John Hardin to win it all. In fact in 2010 and 2009 they were lucky not to be in 4A vs Boyle n Bell who beat them both years.

2008 they again lost by 14. Again not a foregone conclusion they would win out.

2007 JC was doubled up by Lincoln County.

First off I'm not a johnson central supporter. I'm firmly in the Corbin camp. Second, most of those years johnson central gave highlands a better game than anyone they played the rest of the playoffs. While they weren't shoe ins, they would've had a much better chance of winning it all. That being said, this is all subjective. You don't have to agree with me, and I don't have to agree with you. Lets see your list of top ten all time coaches in the mountains. Not top five, that's a cop out. This thread title is top ten.

I would do a top 10 instead of a top 5, but I only have 2 hands and I count with one and type with the other. 5 is as high as I can go.

Matney couldn't carry Miracle's..... You know the rest.

I guess college wins don't count since I don't see Roy Kidd on the list Confusednicker:

My Colonels would have went to a state championship game if not for Dale Mueller Confusednicker:
