RALEIGH, N.C. â The NC State men's basketball team fell short in its bid to secure a fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season as 25th-ranked Miami knocked off the Pack, 86-81, Sunday afternoon inside PNC Arena.
The loss leaves the Wolfpack with a 13-7 overall record and a 3-4 record in ACC play. The Hurricanes are now 14-4 overall with a 3-3 record in the ACC.
Omer Yurtseven led the Pack with 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting. It was his third consecutive contest inside PNC Arena with 20 points or more and one point shy of his career high. He also led the team in rebounds with six while Markell Johnson added a career high 14 assists, the most assists recorded by an NC State player this season.
The 14 assists also rank as the third-most in a game in PNC Arena history.
Allerik Freeman and Torin Dorn each contributed 13 points while Braxton Beverly finished with 10 to round out NC State's double figure scorers.
NC State outrebounded the Hurricanes, 29-24, and shot 54.4 percent from the field, but Miami responded by connecting on 57.6 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 10-of-19 mark from three-point range.
NC State's only lead came after a Yurtseven pick 'n' pop jump-shot 14 seconds into the game. The Hurricanes responded to the 2-0 deficit with an 18-7 run to take an 18-9 lead with 12:58 left in the 1st half. The Pack came back though as a Sam Hunt three-pointer from the right corner with 6:30 left in the first half tied the game 25-25, but the Pack was never able to push past Miami as the Hurricanes went into the locker room with a 36-32 halftime lead.
In the second half, Miami had answer for every NC State run. The Hurricanes would push the lead out to seven or eight points, the Pack would cut it back to a one-score game, but Miami would always respond with a bucket to keep NC State at bay.
The Hurricanes biggest lead came with 6:11 left to play when they took a 77-65 advantage and while the Wolfpack narrowed the margin to just three points, 84-81, with 51 seconds remaining, Miami responded with a dunk to cap the scoring.
Miami was led by Bruce Brown, Jr., who had team-bests in points (19) and assists (9) and tied for the team-high with four rebounds.
Up Next: NC State returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when it travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers (8-12, 0-7). The game is scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m. and will be televised on Raycom Sports Network.
