Syracuse 59 Pittsburg 45
#1
Syracuse, N.Y. -- The jacket came off and the defense went on.

When Pittsburgh guard Parker Stewart hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim angrily ripped off his jacket and slammed it onto his chair on the SU bench.
Stewart's 3-pointer had brought Pitt, which was winless in its first five ACC games, to within 36-32 of the Orange with 14:54 left in Tuesday's game at the Carrier Dome.

But the Syracuse players responded to their coach's wardrobe frustration and tightened up their defense on the Panthers.

Syracuse held Pittsburgh to just one field goal for the next 12 minutes. The Orange extended its lead to 51-37 during that timespan.

The defensive effort helped Syracuse overcome its offensive struggles for a 59-45 win over the Panthers in front of 21,259 fans at the Dome.

Syracuse snapped its four-game losing streak to improve to 13-6 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. The win meant Syracuse avoided its first five-game losing streak since the 1968-69 season.

Pittsburgh fell to 8-11 overall and 0-6 in the ACC. The 0-6 start to conference play is Pittsburgh's worst since joining the ACC. Pittsburgh lost its first six conference games as a member of the Big East in the 2011-12 season.

Syracuse needed its defense to help it win the game. The Orange failed to score more than 60 points for the fourth time this season. Syracuse had lost the three previous games that it scored 60 or less.

The 45 points were a season-low for Pittsburgh.

Syracuse scored eight straight points to close the first half and take a 27-22 lead into intermission.

The Orange trailed 22-19 after Pitt's Kene Chukwuka buried a 3-pointer to give the Panthers the lead with 4:22 left in the half.

Pitt employed a zone defense that stymied the Orange. Syracuse made just 10 out of 24 shots from the field in the first half. The Orange went 3-for-11 from 3-point range.

Howard plays complete game

It wasn't a great night for many of the Syracuse players, but junior point guard Frank Howard put together a complete stat line.

Howard scored a team-high 18 points and also pulled down a career-best seven rebounds. He also had four assists and five steals.

Pitt frosh fires up threes

Stewart, who came into the game averaging 7.4 points per game, scored a career-high 23 points for the Panthers.

A 6-5 freshman from Union City, Tenn., Stewart's previous career-best of 14 came in a Dec. 1 win over Duquesne.

Stewart scored 12 first-half points, hitting four of his seven attempts from 3-point range.

He finished the game 7-for-13 from beyond the arc. He took just one shot inside the 3-point line; a reverse layup in the game's final seconds.

Lineups

Syracuse and Pittsburgh provided sharp contrasts in terms of the stability of their starting lineups.

Boeheim used the same starting lineup that he has put on the court for the Orange's first 18 games.

Howard, Tyus Battle, Matthew Moyer, Oshae Brissett and Paschal Chukwu have each started every game this season for the Orange.

Pitt, on the other, used its 14th different starting lineup in just 19 games. That's the most of any team in the country. Prior to Wednesday's game, Pitt had been tied with UT-Martin, Florida Gulf Coast and Bryant with 13 different starting lineups.
