This is not intended as any sort or yay or nay political post; just discusses a pending budget proposal.

The Trump White House and Pentagon are mulling over a budget proposal to discontinue operating 47 elementary, middle and high schools in the continental US and sending those 20,000 affected students to local schools. The defense dept would continue to operate schools outside the USA.

The unanswered question is whether the local school systems would continue to operate the schools on military posts and bases, or if students would be transported to local public schools.

In Ky - the primary impact would be the closure or merger of Fort Campbell and Fort Knox high schools.

This is still is the talking stages and Ky's congressional delegation has always been able to beat down such proposals that have periodically arisen in previous years. Not sure how long this link will last, but it is working now.

I don’t really care either way. It would save some money I guess. But at the same time if they did break them up I’m sure we’d get accused to recruiting their players hahaha.

In all seriousness though, I don’t see a problem shutting them down or than maybe convince for the parents/kids because of the location or proximity of it being closer to where they live. It would also maybe cost some jobs?? I don’t know??

On fort Campbell new schools and a bunch of money has been spent to build new schools so I doubt they will be closed on Campbell anytime soon

I mean, Fort Campbell has been shrinking in size for the last decade. If I recall, they actually had the highest percentage of students leaving of any school in the state.

600 billion dollars is spent on the military...it would save 50 million dollars to close the schools (a drop in the bucket in those terms). 36,000 people would be with out jobs...how is this a good idea again?

Unfortunately I have witnessed to many times the government waste money (government wasteful spending is the true issue) and built buildings only to shut down whatever they built the buildings for, so the buildings just sit there.

When it comes to school size you are correct...the projected numbers at Fort Knox were supposed to be high 200's in 2018...however they are at 400 or so students this year. I'm sure that Fort Campbell is stabilizing now. However this isn't a numbers game but more about what looks good in the news. It looks good that the government is looking to close agencies like DoDEA stateside schools, but it really isn't doing anything for the budget...just looks like it is. I just hope that the government does the right thing and doesn't put 36,000 employees out the job. Who knows until it happens.
