Congrats Coach Brewer and the Powell County Pirates!

I knew Casey would not blow Powell out. Powell is a lot better than people give them credit. Skidmore is a player.

Nice work Pirates! Next week Powell will host a Regional Championship for the first time in school history. Congratulations, Coach Brewer and the boys!

Sort of funny that Montgomery and neighboring Powell are still alive. Neither usually playing this late in the year.

First off, WOW! PIRATES!!!! A great game! One of the best football games you'll ever watch.
This is one of the best wins for Powell County Football ever! Coach Brewer now has his second statement win, the 28-23 win against Lexington Christian in 2015. This one will probably surpass the Lexington Christian win. Coach Brewer! Wow! The most beautiful game a coach could ever coach! He was tremendous, it was a beautiful sight! He pushed all the right buttons! He was very aggressive the whole night and it payed off! I was incredibly impressed with Powell County's passing game. Brooks through the ball wonderfully! The passing attack was spread out among multiple receivers, on multiple routes and combinations. A wonderful game for Powell. To get back to Coach Brewer, wow, he was phenomenal. I can't express how perfect he called the game tonight. Beautiful, perfect! He has brought his alma-mater to the top! I have never, never, seen a more emotional crowd at a Powell County Football game! The fans stormed the field, some fans were crying, others screaming for joy and pumped beyond belief. Even Coach Brewer was emotional. Coach Brewer better be given the respect he deserves after this. I know I'm giving a lot of praise, but he called a nearly perfect game! Powell probably wouldn't have won tonight without being super aggressive in decision making and he was. Coach Brewer made the right calls at the right times also! He was aggressive and it paid off. He set his players up to make plays and they did. Whether it was going for it and converting, on fourth down in the first half on Powell's 40 yard line, to various onside kicks, a field goal from the 15, etc. He got them all right! I guess after years and years of watching Kentucky losing due to “stupid football” I am just marveled by Coach Brewer's excellent game tonight. And give credit to the players, they made incredible plays all night. Also Powell did this without three of there better players. THREE! The players played amazing, can't forget about there phenomenal plays!
Powell had the ball with 3:08 left in the 4th, leading by 3, 44-41. Powell passed, batted almost intercepted. Then a false start. Followed by two passes. A fade and a screen. After the punt there was 2:43 left on the clock. So on 4 plays only 25 seconds ran off and Casey got away with only calling one timeout. I understand passing the ball, totally, you've been aggressive the whole night and a first down ices it. But, I say you give the ball 3 times to Skidmore, let the clock run make Casey call timeouts, I don't know how many timeouts they had. I'd still prefer to run with Skidmore though. Anyways that and a fake punt in Powell's territory was the only, only questionable coaching calls by Coach Brewer, and when you make those aggressive calls all night your bound to have a couple not go your way. And if it had worked I would have said great call, risky but great call... Out of the risky and aggressive calls Powell connected on probably 11 out of 13. He played to win tonight he gave his players the opportunities to make plays and they did. I have total support for Coach Brewer, I have since he was hired but now more then ever. If you look at what he done in three short years. Your looking at a time when your worst season was 4-7. And that was with only with 5 seniors and 6 returning starters from the year before. Maybe 2 players that were 18, most 15 or 16. Powell had to play players that were not yet ready to play. Powell had 16 players that played varsity snaps and were without 2 of them during the two most important District games and still should have or could have won those games. 16 players, young, inexperience, 5 seniors, 6 returning starters, a 14 year old QB and 4-7 with close games with Lawrence, Breathitt (lost on last play), and Estill, that Powell could have won. That's your worst year. A few plays and a couple breaks from 8-4 and repeating as district champs. That's a pretty good worst year, by Powell County standards for sure. Coach Brewer is the best thing to happen Pirate Football. First ever home playoff game (5) of them, currently 3 home playoff victories, 2 time District Champions, 20-15 at Powell County while playing very good competition LCA, Bell, Casey (4 times), Lawrence twice, Garrard once, West Carter twice, with signature wins over Lexington Christian Academy and Casey in the second round of the playoffs. Wow! What a job! Not for sure how many coaches could do that.
Casey had a coach (I believe) get ejected, not sure why so I won't touch on it. Now to Casey's major mistake. They had the ball on second down, on the one yard line with 12 seconds on the clock and no timeouts. They run the ball to their sideline (into the boundary) on a pitch. They should have passed the ball on second. If they don't get in they'll still have time to run another play. They could have had 2, maybe 3 plays instead they went with one. They bailed Powell out. Cause as a Pirate fan I didn't want them throw the ball and get two plays instead of one. I mean that's an obvious decision to make. How did Casey's coaching staff miss that and what were they thinking. It didn't and doesn't make any sense. After three straight victories over the Pirates with Brewer at the helm Casey probably expected to run over the Pirates. I mean I don't know this, but I'm sure they had already looked ahead to Corbin. Casey's coaches looked disheartened in the middle of the third when the pirates took their first lead. They didn't see it coming at all.
All in all, Coach Brewer is here to stay. He's done a better job than any of the coaches in the other sports, that we won't speak of here. No doubt about that. Hey Big Chief, who else could they fire, lol? In fact I'd say if he retired tonight I would consider him as the best Football Coach Powell ever had, no offense to any previous coaches. That is based off what was solely accomplished at Powell County... Let's enjoy this win Pirates! The Pirate Pride is high. The brotherhood and family side of the program is as high or higher than it's ever been. The most emotional win for the fan base ever! GO PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to Powell. I had no clue they were this good. On film I KNEW Skidmore was a real player. I wondered if his line could help him out, and I wondered if his skill players could get out and make blocks for him against our (normally VERY solid defense). Well, the answer was a resounding yes, they blocked great. We could not set the edge all night. Then when we maybe stopped the run (which never really happened), but when we held 2 downs/2runs to maybe a 3rd and 5, Powell would run a very nice pass play. In my opinion this was one of the better called games by a team we've faced all year, by Powell's coaches. I think I said if Casey played really well, we'd win by 21+...I said if we played average, a 2 TD win, and if we played bad there was a chance it would be a close game. I WILL NOT discredit Powell's effort after maybe leading you up to think this. We did not play our best game on defense, but I won't say it was simply cause of our kids, it was a whole lot of Powell kid's determination, and Powell coaching. We played as well on offense as we had in any game all year. I cannot say we played a bad offensive game. I don't know if Powell folks will agree, but IMO they played an absolute great game on offense. The onsides kicks killed us. Powell got 3 extra possessions from onside recoveries (Casey did get one onsides themselves)...
As for a coach getting thrown out, that didn't happen. One of our fans stepped onto the field towards a ref, apparently saying some things he shouldn't have. Just a fan thing there.
My congrats to POwell, as well as Corbin. I really wanted another shot at Corbin. Our kids had been gearing up for that and talked about it every day. But that is why you can never get too cocky, never think another team has no hope. Then it comes up to bite you right in the butt....Anyway, hope it's another good game next week, and injury free. Corbin, I feel, is a great team and have a chance to prove it. But Powell county is no joke of a team at all.
Casey finished a 2 year stretch of 10 win seasons (our best ever before was an 8 win season). This is our most winning group of seniors in our history. Our junior class will eclipse that total next year, and we are hoping to increase our numbers to around 55 to 60 kids by 2018.

I think Mike Whitaker was the coach then, I know he was first coach to take Powell Co. to the Playoffs. Congrats to Powell Co. on a huge win.

Correction: Tom Posey was the first coach to take Powell to the playoffs. Coach Brewer was a senior on that team. That is one of the things that makes this special. Brandon Brewer is the best football player in Powell County history and the best coach.

He definitely can call a good football game. Things we had coached our kids up on film, he barely ran. He switched up some things on offense from previous games and we just couldn't stop the run. I'd say we've been one of the top 5 run stopping defenses in 3A this season. Not last night.
