Should marijuana be legal?
#31
A couple of points, why would Marijuana be impossible to tax?  If it is legally sold through approved growers and vendors then the tax is easily traced.  With a legal market, the price will be lower and the risk/reward won't be there to grow your own and sell it illegally.  Hence we don't have thousands of moonshiners throughout the hills anymore.

I hadn't heard about the saliva test.  My biggest concern to date has been the ability to keep people off the roads.  A urine test could pop a posititve for use days ago.  Any decent legal mind gets someone off for that.  Within hours is different.
#32
It would be impossible to tax not because of illegal selling. People would grow it to smoke it themselves!!!!  It is easier to grow weed then make moonshine. Hence to why there would be a problem there.
#33
I think that its stupid to have fun by smoking pot ! That just tells me that the people dont have anything better to do ! I think that most of the people that do it are on welfare or is on there way to being on welfare ! Its for the people that think there gonna be kool but in 10 years think of how you will be living! Your not gonna have anyone that wants anything to do with you and if your caught doing it or selling it then you might as well flush your life down the tolet !

Sorry, I thought it would be understood, and just so you know, I'm pretty sure that Phillip Morris (or maybe Proctor & Gamble) has bought the right to vend it if it ever become legal to sale.

Marajuania should never be legalized its stupid

Do you like Alcohol? It makes people act very stupid and most of the time you have to be drunk to deal with them.
Im with homer! I HATE alcohol and the effects of it! I HATE marijuana and the effects of it! I HATE cigarettes and the effects of them!

Someon else stated earlier that there would be people getting contact buzz's. Can you imagine your 5 year old child getting a contact buzz walking home from school? Can you imagine your 8 year old sister coming home high? Could you imagine a preacher, or an elder in your church, getting high because someone around them was smoking weed? Can you imagine your mother or father coming home from work ready for a 10 sack of white castle because they got high at a gas station on the way home??

Its just not right people!!!
You cannot walk past pot smoke and get high.  It would take long term exposure.  I do agree that it isn't something that could be done in a public setting due to exposure like in a restaurant..

Beer is legal.

In conclusion what i do on my own time, if i'm not driving or out making an ass of myself is none of your business!
Quote:

Just because something is legal doesn't make it right.  More people are killed every year by people driving under the influence alcohol (16,694 in 2004) than people killed by drivers under the influence of marijuana.  I do respect your control.  Your last statement makes a great point for both.

I read the entire page.  You said that it said people would be doing it more commonly!  That I didn't see.  I do agree that the memory and cognitive aspect were on the page.

I was in no way recruiting people to use drugs or drink beer.

BJ Thank You for respecting my control, and I really respect your thoughts on the matter.

Actually, beer is derived from hops. Seeing as hops is a plant, I'm pretty sure that "God" made plants, so hypothetically by your theory God made beer. Also, as pointed out in an earlier post, marijuana is a gateway drug. Allow me to break gateway down for you, it means that it would open the figurative "gate" to other, "worse" drugs. These drugs could take the most motivated, hard-working person in the universe and bring them down to the least motivated person in the universe. In turn, that would lead them to look for excuses to shy away from employment, and lo and behold, welfare, or "the draw", is an adequate excuse if they can find a way to make it seem that they are disabled. In defense of blackcat_student's statement, I simply believe he was making an indirect analogy implying that there is no future in drug use, and I'm not willing to argue against his point. I don't have any research or evidence to back this up, I'm simply observing the fact that most drug addicts that I've ever seen aren't exactly what one would call financially stable. Again, no statistics, just a lot of logic.

The funny thing is that most start with alcohol first.  So could it be the real gateway drug?  Pot is natural from God.  Man has to alter God's creation to make beer!  That is what I was saying.

I think it is time for me to give my opinion on this subject!  I feel as if it should be legal for adults.  It should be regulated by the government and taxed.  Yes people would be able to grow their own, but they can make personal use alcohol now also.  Here are some of my reasons:

1). It would create a great deal of taxable income for the state and would put many farmers to work.
2). It would save millions of dollars from court cost, jail cost, and police cost. The marijuana ratification program does little to solve the problem, but cost a great deal.
3). The product would be regulated and controlled.  If my daughter ever decides to try it, I would rather her get it from the ABE store than some punk down the street.

If it was legal, laws would have to be put in place much like the alcohol laws of today.  It would be illegal to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence.  It would be illegal to smoke it in a public place were other would breath the smoke (much like some of the recent cigarette laws).  It would also only be sold to adults that are 21 or older.  Anyone that gives any adult substance to a minor would be penalized.  You would not be aloud to go to work under the influence and you can be tested for recent use as noted on one of my post.

I will never buy in to the gateway drug theory.  Most will tell you that they tried alcohol before they tried anything else; therefore, alcohol would be just as much of a gateway drug as pot.  Most people say that they commit crimes due to drugs and alcohol, but in most cases they never had any drive to do anything while they were sober.   For the record I have smoked pot and enjoyed it much better than alcohol and say very little difference in the two other than the fact that I never black out on pot.  I completed college and smoked some during that phase of my life.  I am very successful and hold a full time job.   I have never received a welfare check or an unemployment check.  I started working at a very young age and worked the entire time I was in college.  I was mowing about 20 lawns at the time.

I would like to state for the record that I don’t smoke pot today due to the fact that I put my family and career before alcohol or marijuana.  I will not support any young person using any type of mind altering substance.   Life is much better when you are sober and enjoy it.  I feel as if I live in a free country and should have the right to do what I want at my home as long as I am not harming anyone else.

all I want to know is what country belfry justice lives in.surely you all know this site is monitored by multiple government agencies.the feds just today won their battle with google and now google must turn over all web searches to the federal government just like yahoo and msn and the feds will decide who they need to start an investigation on.and under the patriot act they do not have to tell anyone anything.to me this is far more alarming than someone smoking, drinking, overeating, going to the wrong church, having the wrong sex and any of a hundred other things that in my opinion the govt has no business being involved in.bad laws make good people outlaws.there are people in prison today for operating a gambling enterprise twenty years ago.who is the gambling enterprise today?we have federal, state, city, and county govts fighting each other over who gets lottery, poker and slot machines, and casinos.whew, sorry I get carried away sometimes.my point is I personally do not think it is any of my business what my neighbor does as long as they are not causing me or society grief.if they want to eat a bowl of transfat while smoking pot and betting on the super bowl, things I wouldn't be inclined todo,it is okay with me.

Where is your data that anyone is mad at anyone?  I only have an opinion on the subject and whether you agree or disagree doesn't upset me in any way.  I m not sure were any one said anything that indicated that anyone was mad except you.  I do know that I do a great deal of substance abuse counseling in my line of work and just as many people have a difficult time with alcohol addition.  I know that it was the first drug that I tried, and I do call alcohol a drug.  Anything that impairs the body is a drug.

no body on this entire earth has over-dosed from pot. but then again, it does lead to doing other drugs. beer causes so many deaths in the US though, i think beer should be illegal but thats my opinion.  i vote yes for pot.

I'd love to see your data for alcohol being the "gateway drug".
Quote:
Here is some sad data to support my theory that alcohol is a gateway drug.
Hope this helps!  :lmao:
http://www.drugwatch.org/Alcohol%20&...0Drugs.htm

A few quotes from this information:  1). “The use of alcohol and tobacco has taken a great toll on youth and society and is a predictor of future alcohol abuse and addiction, as well as the use of other drugs.”
2). “In North America and other countries, alcohol is the number one drug used by teens.  Its use is also the number one contributing factor in youthful deaths.”
3). “Alcohol and tobacco kill more people annually than all other drugs combined.”
4). “Youth who drank alcohol were 50 times more likely to use cocaine, and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes were 19 times as likely to use cocaine.”

Another site that supports me: http://www.wbir.com/printfullstory.aspx?storyid=22661

Few quotes from it:

1). “Local experts say alcohol is a gateway to other drugs, as well as risky behavior.”
2).  "Kids start with alcohol and it leads to other substances, including all those substances that nobody wants to talk about."

One more site for support:  http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/InMyOpi...roach.html

Quotes from it:
1).  “Alcohol is the dirtiest drug we have. It permeates and damages all tissue. No other drug can cause the same degree of harm that it does.”
2).  “Alcohol is a gateway drug leading people into illicit drug use.”
3).  “The supposed "proof" provided is that most people who are involved with illicit drugs drank alcohol initially.”

People are going to smoke pot if it is legal or not. More people will smoke it if it is legal. I look down upon people who smoke marijuna just like I do people who play the damn lottery everyday. But I also am happy those people do this. They are paying for higher education by playing the lottery. THE LOTTERY PAYS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION. Imagine if we could legalize, sell, tax and use for INTERNATIONAL TRADE marijuana. The benefits outway the negative to ME. I am seeing general statements on this issue. People that are for it are because of money, tax, jobs, and other economical issues and the people saying no are for health, and morality issues. There is a compromise in everything. I think if it can be controled like alcohol we will all benefit from this. If people dont want it in their community they can do the same thing they do with alcohol and make there county or city dry. It is common for dry counties in KY. Think about these issues and then tell me what you think.

This also isn't a sports discussion forum.  This is a general discussion and offtopic forum.  Material like this is allowed.  When there are bills going through legislature considering the legalization and taxing, everyone has a right to know and voice their opinion.  Many people on here are 18+ years of age or will be soon and have or will soon have a voice in government.  Why not make them aware of this issue?  With proper knowledge, these "little boys and girls" can logically voice an opinion do help run the country the way they best see fit.  That's what is great about America.  We have the freedom of speech to talk about such topics in an adult manner, and then turn around and voice our opinion and vote to make our opinions come true.  Have you not noticed how maturely this topic has been handled by most everyone in this thread?

Oh boy first of all, how can people knock on this subject and talk bad about it, if they have never tried themselves. Tobacco and Pot are the only natural drugs that you dont have to anything to besides roll a little paper around it and consume. Everything else is man altered.

This is a general discussion forum and anything can be discussed in this forum as long as it doesn't violate the rules of BGR.  This is an issue that has made National News during the past few years.  It is also legal in several states for medical reasons.  I see no harm in a debate about the subject.  No one here is looking to promote the use of Marijuana for anyone.  We are only debating a topic that many people have an opinion on.  I will let you know that this same topic has been debated on many other site and one that could be considered a rival.  I don't feel as if I have violated any rules and have been very fair with my view of the subject.

IMO, it really doesnt matter if it is legalized or not. Sure a few more ppl will do it but if they want to do it they are going to do it anyways. Just because a law is passed doesnt make it any more morally right to do it and if you have your morals right then you can make your own decesion on wheather you want to buy or do this drug.      Cool

All right, sorry, I've been gone to the Sweet 16, and couldn't reply. That's a very good argument with the website. Do this for me though, give a survey without choices, and poll people on what they consider the "gateway drug". I'm guessing that atleast 80 percent of the people polled will say Marijuana, or one of its street names. That's the consensus.
