Williamsburg, KY â The Patriot Football team has something to celebrate on Saturday night as once again, Joe Rose would hammer a 19 yard field goal through the uprights to give the Patriots a 33-30 win over the Bulldogs of Union College in the "Battle for the Brass Lantern." The win mark the third time in four years that the game has been decided by a touchdown or less. The victory pushes the Patriot to 4-1 overall on the season and now 1-0 in MSC Appalachian Division play.
UC would receive the kick to begin the game and would put together a nice ten play drive covering 79 yards capped by a 14 yard TD pass from Josiah Robbins to Shon Jones in the corner of the endzone. Rose's PAT was good, giving the Patriots an early 7-0 lead. Union would get 43 yards on their first play from scrimmage, a pass from Alex Bell to Tyler Toombs, moving the ball to the UC 35 yard line. From there though, the Patriot defense would come up big, holding the Bulldogs on a fourth down and four play, getting the ball back on their 27 yard line. UC would pick up a couple of first downs on their next drive, but would be forced to punt away. Devon McMillin would use a nice coffin corner punt to pin Union deep in its own territory at the two yard line.
After a personal foul penalty brought the ball out to the Union 17 yard line, a sack by Murphy Hagan would be followed by an interception by Jaelon Benjamin in which he found pay dirt from 21 yards out. The point after by Rose was good, giving UC its biggest lead of the night at 14-0. Union would stall out yet again at the end of the first quarter, being forced to punt the ball away on the opening play of the second. The punt by Alex Bell was a good one though, as it would roll all the way down to the UC one yard line. The Patriots would go three-and-out and would have to punt from deep in their own territory as Union would take over on the UC 37.
The Bulldogs would then put together their first scoring drive of the game, going 37 yards on five plays ending with a 14 yard run by Bell. The PAT from Derek Burgett was good, cutting the lead to 14-7. The Patriots would begin to put together another nice drive, but the Bulldog defense would stay strong, forcing another punt. This time, a fair catch on the 34 yard punt by McMillan would put Union on their own 10 yard line to start the drive. After a short three yard run, Bell would go to the air and find Toombs once again, this time for 87 yards and another Union touchdown. The point after was good, tying the game at 14-14 with 6:25 to play in the half.
Union would try to catch the Patriots off guard with a pooch kick, but Cameron Baxley would make the successful catch and down the ball at the UC 45 yard line. After a Union five-yard penalty, the Patriots would march down the field on a four play drive topped off with a 28 yard TD pass from Robbins to Austin Ysidro to regain the lead. Another successful PAT followed, giving UC a 21-14 lead. The Bulldogs would try to even the score again, but this time, Bell's pass for Toombs on a third and six was intercepted by Jarrett Cornelius, giving the Patriots another possession and short field with just 2:15 to play in the half. A couple of big penalties would plague the drive which ended with a fumble that was recovered by Union's Xeric Griffin on their own 19 yard line with under a minute to play in the half. Bell would then lead the Bulldogs down the field, getting to the UC 14 yard line with three seconds remaining. Burgett would come out and hit a 31 yard field goal, sending the game to halftime with the Patriots leading 21-17.
Union would get the ball to begin the half, but the Patriot defense would come up big, coming up with three sacks on the drive before Matthew Castner would recover a fumble on a fourth and 11 attempt by Union, giving the ball to the Patriots at the UC 26 yard line. The Patriots would go three-and-out on the ensuing possession and would give the Bulldogs short field to work with as Union took over on the UC 49 yard line. The Bulldogs would get their first lead of the game on the drive as Bell would find Darian Patterson on a 16 yard reception for a TD. Burgett's point after was good, giving Union a 24-21 lead. The Patriots drive would carry over to the fourth quarter and would get into field goal range. Rose would come out to attempt a 35 yarder, but it would go wide right for just his second miss of the season as Union held on to a 24-21 lead with 13:56 to play.
Union's next drive looked to put all the momentum on their side of the field as they would put together a ten play drive covering 80 yards capped by a 2 yard TD run by Jalen Ashby to make it 30-21. The point after attempt by Burgett though was botched as Jaelon Benjamin would come up big again, returning the botch 99 yards to the end zone for a two-point try for UC, making it 30-23 Union. UC would answer on their next drive as well. Starting on their own 33 yard line, the Patriots would march down the field on seven plays as Austin Hatfield would punch in a touchdown on a one yard run. The point after by Rose was good, knotting the game back up at 30-30 with 6:46 to play. The two teams would trade punts as Union looked to make something happen with their final drive that started on their own 28 yard line with 1:25 to play. The Patriot defense though came up big, holding the Bulldogs to a three-and-out and forcing them to punt it away with under a minute to play. A fair catch by Myles Betts put the Patriots on their own 39 yard line with 47 seconds to play.
Josiah Robbins and the Patriot offense then took the field looking to come away with points and a victory. Robbins would pick up a first down on a third and two with his feet, getting the ball to the 50 yard line before the Patriots would call a timeout. After an incomplete pass, Robbins would find Nate Cohen on back-to-back passes for nine and seven yards respectively, giving UC another first down at the Union 34 yard line. After another incomplete pass, Robbins would find Shon Jones down the sideline for 18 yards, moving the ball to the Union 16 yard line for another first down. On first and ten with just eight seconds left, Robbins would scamper for 14 yards, getting the ball to the Union two yard line as the Patriots would call another timeout with just two ticks left on the clock. Joe Rose would then be called upon again for the second time in three games for a game winning field goal attempt. This one would come from 19 yards out as he split the uprights as time expired, giving the Patriots a 33-30 win and bringing the Brass Lantern Trophy back to Williamsburg. The field goal tied the single season record for most in a season, giving him 11 on the year.
Robbins was a big leader for the Patriots offensively on the night. He would go 13-20 through the air for 181 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and a fumble. He also carried the ball 14 times for 59 yards. Seph Burke added 76 yards on 13 carries while Zalon Reynolds added 68 yards on nine touches. Hunter Miniard caught one pass for 46 yards while Shon Jones and Austin Ysidro combined for six catches, 78 yards, and two TDs.
Defensively, the Patriots were led by Tyler Pendleton with nine tackles (two solo) including 1.5 tackles for loss. Robbie Garvin added seven tackles (two solo) with 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Murphy Hagan also added four tackles (two solo) and 2.5 sacks. UC as a unit tallied 5.0 sacks, 10.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery.
UC now turns their attention to another huge MSC Appalachian Division matchup on Saturday, October 7th as they travel to take on #3 ranked Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia. The Eagles are currently 4-0 and 1-0 in divisional play, which means the winner of the game will put themselves in great position to have a shot at winning the MSC Appalachian Division Title. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1:30 pm.

I used to love watching this game on WYMT years and years ago. I always rooted for what was then Cumberland College.

Yeah, it upset me when they changed their name to the Patriots. Cumberland went by Indians to honor Native Americans. In our politically correct world
I guess the term Indians is considered derogatory.
