Should Kentucky Start Using Private School Multiplier?
#1
There is always discussion and debate over private schools in this state and on this site.

Kentucky currently only has a handful of private schools playing football. Of those, there is simply not enough of them to play in their own division.

It's also unrealistic to expect all of them to move up to 6A like has been proposed before.
So what if kentucky used a multiplier for private the same way Tennessee does. Personally i think it works great for them. They use a 1.5 multiplier for most of their privates I believe.
In this scenario, if a private school had 1000 kids in it making it a 4A or 5A school in this state, then you would multiply by 1.5 giving you 1500. You would then be placed in 6A.

(Ekualum, help me out with this if you see something wrong.)

This is where some of the private schools in this state would fall....

New Cath (current males 177) using the 1.5 multiplier, new cath would then be considered having 266 kids. This wouldn't effect new cath. They'd still be 2A.

LCA (current males 238) using the 1.5 multiplier would give them 357. That would easily move them to 3A from 2A.

Covington Catholic, (current males 595) who already plays up in the wrong class using 1.5 multiplier would give them 893. That would put them on the lower end of 5A, where they currently are.

And so on. If anybody want to take the time to list them all go ahead. This would not effect 6A privates as they're already in the biggest class. Another way this only works is if you PLAY IN THE CLASS YOURE SUPPOSED TO. No jumping back and forth no matter the geography.

Yes and put it on the independent schools too.

I'm not sure why independents would need one. They're no different than any other public school. Almost all city schools are ind. which is half the teams in the state. It would negate the entire process and just make the numbers per class larger but with the same teams playing
#4
They are different. Why do you think you have so many independents playing in the finals?
#5
Unless it has changed, the khsaa does have a 1.5 multiplier on enrollment in private school.

They are different than a public school. They can pick and choose who attends their school and a public school cant.

You had one public school play for state title last year. Pulaski.
#7
I support the measure, but I'm not sure some understand the profound difference between "independent" school systems and "privates."

in the words of donald trump... wrong. belfry is a public school.

Independents are public schools. What is so hard to understand about this?
#10
Maybe your thinking of Magnet schools? Independent you can't pick and choose for independent.

Your right. I meant to say there was only one county school playing for state title. Pulaski Co.

Independent schools can pick who attends and who they dont want too. a public school has to take them.

Not quite half - I'd say there are about 50 Kentucky high schools in independent districts.

In the state championships last year, 4 schools that played were independent public schools (Beechwood, Hazard, Danville, and Bowling Green). 6 were county schools (Johnson Central, Pulaski County, Franklin-Simpson, Lafayette, Central, and Belfry). 2 were privates (Trinity and CAL). If you go back and look at the numbers then you can see that the past few years have had very similar proportions and more often than not it is the county schools that have the highest representation in the state championship games.

Pike has 5 county high schools - Belfry, Pike Central, East Ridge, Shelby Valley and Phelps.
Jefferson has 24, I think.

Just depends on what kind of agreement that is in place. Each can be different. The issue is Private have no boundaries or zones. Bottom line they recruit for the school and hide athletics in it. Example: Open House they invite public school kids and take them through the school and sell them on academics and even the sports program. Let us at Bell invite a Middlesboro kid to the school and throw a sells pitch at him. What would happen?

Independents have to take students within their boundaries

Also Belfry, Johnson Central, Franklin-Simpson, Central, Lafayette (public/county schools). And Hazard, Bowling Green, Danville (Independent schools). Just to add to your post.

A young coach suggested this to me once and I thought it was a pretty good idea. If you want to even the playing field with (gasp) "recruiting", you need to have A) stricter penalties for schools who have been in violation instead of punishing just the kid who was recruited by an adult. Or B) since everyone thinks private, county, and independent schools all play by different rules lets go ahead and split them into different classes (1A small Independant, 2A big independant, 3A Small County, 4A big County, 5A small independant, 6A big independant). Of course this would have people upset because now teams like Lex Cath would have to really increase numbers to compete with Trinity. Now you have teams like Male and Bowling Green playing in the finals, Trinity and St. X, Belfry and Johnson Central, just seems like some pretty good state final match-ups.

I think that is the only fair thing to do. I have done some research on this matter. I cannot find another state that allows this unfair competition. Truth is, this is no where near fair in the last level of what one expects to be fair competition. You have schools sending coaches to local public schools and recruiting them to come to their school. Of course, they have more money to offer anything the kids want. I recall a visit to a private school recently where the boosters were bragging that they had the talent they had at that time because they started walking the halls of some different schools recently.

The problem is that these schools are run, for the most part, by wealthy people. They therefore have plenty of attorneys to fight their battles. They also have plenty of money to somewhat entice the powers that be in KHSAA.

There has therefore been an effort underway to black eye the KHSAA into making the proper adjustments. It is my understanding that ESPN, Fox Sports and CBS are considering an investigative report into this matter. The sad part of this is that these are adults that are teaching kids that it is okay to buy their way to the top.

Independents hold no advantage. They are still public and cannot recruit. For several years here we had public school Graves County allowing our kids to go there free. We at Mayfield finally allowed the county kids to do the same. Explain to me any advantage of being independent.

The 6 class system is in its 11th year. There have been 8 private 6A champs, 0 5A, 1 4A, 0 3A, 6 2A and 1 1A. I could have missed something but that's close.
#28
You can't eliminate all recruiting or "talent flow" as the term someone used on a thread before. Some independent schools have very porous boundaries or are allowed to accept students outside the city limits. Also some counties with multiple schools allow students to attend schools in the county other than the one their address would suggest. At least these are situations I have heard of from people who live in areas where this is reportedly the case. It seems very rare to have a "One-school county" make it to the finals. Pulaski and Belfry have other schools in their county and talent sometimes flows to one particular school or swings from one school to others over a period of years. Anyone know the last school from a one-school county to make the finals?
#29
How many private schools play football? Last time I checked it was about 15? 6A and 2A seem to be the classes that you have the biggest problem. No multiplier would effect 6A. New Cath would remain in 2A so there would be little effect there.
#30
What do people mean by independents can pick and choose who attends? That's not true.
