Breathitt County has hired a new coach for the lady cats. David K Abner was selected as the new Lady Cats coach. David is in his mid-twenties. David has never played organized basketball and has no head coaching experience. What he does have though, is what's important in Breathitt County and that is connections. David is a first cousin to the Chairman of the Breathitt County School Board's husband. He is not without basketball credentials though he assisted prior coach Wallace Bates for two years. I guess Wallace taught him all he needed to know to take over the reigns of what still has to be one of the top 3 or 4 jobs in the 14th region. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

I got no dog on this tree but never played ball and no coaching exp? for real?

Not Kidding!! If it weren't Breathitt County, I wouldn't believe it either. He was hired as Social Studies teacher two years ago. I mean if your going to have a team, at least, hire a coach that has some qualifications. What does this say to the community and, not to mention, the girls on the team about how much you support them

I think David Kyle will do fine. He seems to be very knowledgeable and he has a good relationship with his current and former players. I'm just curious, who else applied for the job?

Seriously, this is a slap in the face to current and former players. This guy never even played middle school basketball. This stinks so much of politics it's mind numbing. I know of at least two other applicants.

I bet Cat Daddy would be singing a different tune had the school system hired this guy or one like him, with no playing or coaching experience, as head football coach when your sons played.

i've been around a few programs, and those that are whining and complaining before a coach ever coaches his or her first game are the problems. Get a life and realize that most jobs in most professions are as the result of who you know. The fact that someone didnt' play HS basketball has zero impact. Most HS players don't have the knowledge to fill a thimble.
The fact is that coaching jobs, particularly girls coaching jobs are not very sought after. Look at the number that come open every year. Look at how long coaches, especially in girls, stay before they quit or move on. complainers like you are the problem.

Hypocritical much Proud Panther? Just read your post on another thread complaining about coaching situation elsewhere. I'm all for giving a new coach a shot, but this situation is unique. This guy is not even a coach, is my point. He has no coaching or playing background. This stinks on so many levels. It easy to say give the guy a chance unless your the parent of a girl on the team or even a girl on the team. This tells the players the administration is not willing to give an effort to hire a capable coach, why should you players give an all out effort.

You didn't read my post. I said it was a mess. and the search process was. I then said i would support the new guy. As for your question why should players give an all out effort? are you kidding me? really? id suggest that any that don't fee they can give an all out effort take their marbles and go home and shoot hoops with their daddy's who obviously have it all figured out. Anytime you can't fully buy into a team, you do all your TEAMMATES a disservice. They owe it to their team, teammates, and themselves to give it all they can.

Does the school system owe the team anything? Like say a capable coach. You sound like an administrator.

Not sure Breathitt Co. should be considered a top 7 job in any sport in the 14th region. Who in their right mind would go to a school still under state management, in the process of hiring a new superintendent, with a depleting enrollment, that has a horrible reputation of firing quality people/coaches? Roscoe Denny, the late Peggy Moore, Chris Baker, and Brian Hall just to name a few.
Charlotte Sizemore and Kendal Noble, arguably the two best girls bball players to attend BHS in the last 25 yrs transferred out of the district to try to win a state title. Hazard did just that in 1997, and Perry Central had a legitimate shot had Noble not injured her knee.

....and yet we didn't learn a thing Rawlings Fan. Breathitt has a strong history in girls basketball. Been to the state several times, including runner-up finish in '78 and Miss Basketball. If this guy were the only applicant i could understand, but he wasn't , far from it. I could also see it if we were talking about Riverside or Jackson City, but Breathitt is in the discussion as a regional favorite if not every year, most years.

Once again, who applied for the job? Who didn't get hired, that was more qualified?

Daniel, you know as well as I do who applied. There were at least two others and I'm not going to reveal names on a message board. For that matter, anyone that applied would have at least been as qualified as this guy, at worst. The two I know of that applied were highly qualified. Administration told the press that the coach would be evaluated after one year. What would one year hurt they said. I say tell that to a senior who has poured her heart and soul out for the team

Like the rest of EKy the majority of the talented former players have moved away and started families elsewhere. Welcome to the all a classic + Powell, Estill, and consolidated schools. I agree that BHS isn't as bad as some schools in athletics. But it is at or near the bottom academically. Most coaches teach to earn a living. Teaching at Jackson or Riverside would be much more favorable.

I don't know who you are referring to, but this isn't Daniel. Regardless of who's coaching, everyone should support him and give him the same opportunity that past coaches have been given.
