Final from Corbin. Congrats Cards.

Shocking margin. Anyone got details of the game?

South is rising at the right time. Gotta think this statement win makes them favorites in the 13th region right now.

Just got in from Corbin. SL has a lethal combo in Grubb and JJ Ramey. I seen flashes of brilliance in Ramey last year as a Freshman. He is becoming a rising star for South Laurel.
Don't have stats yet, but I'm guessing that Grubb led all scorers, but JJ was absolutely lethal beyond the 3 pt line.
South led throughout the game, building a double digit lead by half. Corbin never seriously threatened and seemed stifled by South's defense. Corbin did seem to have an effective full court press and trap but seemed to relent from it by the third quarter. Game got chippy with three technicals dished out. The first was a double tech on both teams for a scrum under the SL basket in the first half. The third T was given to a corbin player for pushing Grubb after a foul. This was done in plain sight of an official, and I was a bit disappointed that Coach Pietrowski did not light into the kid for lack of discipline.
As long as Corbin has Andrew Taylor, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the regional. However, if they draw Whitley County in the first round of districts, I would put them on upset alert as the Colonels are playing better ball, and Corbin seems to be in a slide after blowout losses to Knox Central and South.

Ramey 32
Grubb 23
Bench had 19 (I believe.)
But you are spot on with coach P condoning the way his kids play this year. If someone calls this Corbin team dirty, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on to argue it. Seems like they're good for a couple technicals a game, and several uncalled cheapshots. Usually the same 3-4 kids though.

Outside of Taylor, I did not see a consistent offensive threat from any of Corbin's guys. They can cause issues with their press, and seem to get after it on the boards.
I've seen plenty of South-Corbin games over the past few years to know it can get chippy real quick. Felt that Coach P should have lit a fire under that kid's butt for a very blatant technical. that was it done right in front of the trailing official was just dumb.

Hopkins had both techs for Corbin

South didn't shoot well last time these two played. That changed tonite. Ramey made a statement tonite. Grubb was grubb. Souths defense as usual was the diff though. Frustrated Corbin all nite.

Coach davis had brought his bench along through out the year. Bench play was a huge ? Mark at first of year. The best thing is for south the bench will keep getting better and better.

Last year I thought the Anders kid would be a bit more productive than JJ after Caleb Taylor and Andrew Griffith left. Anders is still a nice player, but I'm amazed at how JJ has developed. Really feel that Ramey could become an all state type of performer next year.
South's d was frustrating Corbin, but I see the chink in the armor for the Cards is rebounding. SL is a big man away from being a serious contender to win State.

This is a very good team. Don't be shocked during tournament time.

They've played against two 7 footers, probably six or seven 6'7"-6'9" kids, and beat the #1 team in the state and whatever Corbin was ranked. That doesn't make them state title contenders? I only say that because I've saw majority of the top teams in the state play, and none of them are head and shoulders above South or Corbin.
01-25-2017, 05:26 AM
South don't have your normal big man anymore that's for sure. Nobody in 13th does. South had faired really well against the top big men in the state though. Graves co big 6'11" heading to eastern I believe. Covington cath big has offers from multiple d1 schools and is 7 foot. I see what ur saying but south still seems to get it done

Good points.
Based on who you've seen this year, who do you see as title contenders for state, or for the 13th region?

Every time you think you have the 13th region figured out a slide like this happens out of Corbin. South, Harlan, Knox, Corbin, Clay have all had really solid wins this year. It just depends on who gets hot during the tourney
01-25-2017, 06:03 AM
South, Knox Central, Harlan County look to be the favorites. But, who knows, Corbin, Clay or North could get on a roll
The 13th should be an awesome tournament this year

Clay has only had one solid win inside the 13th. North at clay. Red bird Jackson don't really count. They did play Harlan co close and clay stayed within striking distance of south barbourbille beat clay too I think. Clay is dangerous team but not a contender to win three straight I don't think. I like clay team so don't take that wrong. Jmo as of now
01-25-2017, 06:11 AM
In the coming years clay will be a contender to win three straight for several years. A lot of talent coming for clay
01-25-2017, 05:58 PM
The 13th region is a roller coaster. I thought Corbin and Harlan County were 1 & 2, but now I think South Laurel has emerged as the favorite with Harlan County and Knox Central close behind. The 13th region tournament is always fantastic. Ky Playmaker I think you're correct on Clay. Good enough to pull and upset, but I'm not sure they could win 3 games in a row this year.

My top 5 would be:
1. South Laurel. Impressive wins and an impressive resume. Grubb, Anders, and Ramey have played in the big games.
2. Knox Central. Split 1-1 with Corbin. Lost a close one to Harlan Co. Think Turner is one of the most underrated players in the region. Liford is a good player too.
3. Corbin. Split 1-1 with South and Knox. Beat LCA. Beat Harlan County by a bunch. Lost to a good Knox team and a good South team, I think people are panicking more than they should.
4. Harlan County. Beat Knox. Got beat by Corbin and Perry. Think Spurlock and Carmichael are fantastic players. Wish they had played more region teams.
5. North Laurel. Split 1-1 with Clay and got beat by South and HC, but Broughton can win a game himself.
I personally think the top 4 are neck and neck and all 4 could win three straight and win region. South behind their guards. Corbin behind Taylor and their defense. Knox behind Turner, Wells, and Liford. HC behind their guards as well. I think Clay and North could win a game or maybe even two to spoil some top teams in the region, just can't see them winning threee straight. I've seen all these teams play and I think the draw for this years region tourney will have a lot to do with how things shake out.

South Laurel has and will play a schedule that should prepare them for postseason. Games against CovCath, GRC, Covington Scott, PRP should be beneficial. The Cards still have dates at Lex Dunbar, and at Madison Central, which always seems to be a tough game for SL.
Knox Central really intrigues me, mostly because I've yet to see them play. But scoring 93 on Corbin opened my eyes a bit to them.
Corbin needs a consistent threat outside Taylor, it still seems to be a committee type of deal. But, I would not write Corbin off at all.
Harlan Co is still searching for a big postseason run. This could be the year, but I question the schedule just a bit.

Harlan County split with Perry.
I think they are playing just about all the region top 10 teams (Corbin, KC, North, Clay, Whitley, Pineville, Barbourvile, Bell), except for South, plus most of the best teams in the 14th (Perry, Cordia, Letcher, Hazard)

I could see South or Corbin making a run in state. I would say Knox based on their starting 5, but you need some kind of bench to make a run, and they just have no bench. As far as state title "favorites". I'd say Trinity, Scott County, Bowling Green, Covington Catholic, Cooper, and Christian County would be considered favorites. But I do believe that South can play with any of those mentioned.

SL for sure. They seem to be getting better every game.

Have you seen Fern Creek out of Louisville? I think they could be tough coming out of the Sixth Region. Also, going to check out Oldham County next week. They have some impressive wins as of late, including Trinity, South Oldham and Collins.

Should make for a heck of a 13th region tournament. Feel like the past couple it's been top heavy with a couple teams and then a big drop. Think there's a lot of parity this season

My bad, I forgot about Fern Creek, they are very good and athletic. I have not watched them this year, other than online. That's the tough thing about a lot of these teams that have a shot at a state title, is that some of them won't make it out of their region. 7th region will be Trinity or Fern Creek, 9th region will be Cooper or Covington Catholic, 11th more than likely Scott County or Dunbar, 2nd region is Hopkinsville or Christian County. May need to have 2 sweet 16's and have the winners of each one, play each other. Lol.

Actually, Fern Creek is Sixth region. Fern Creek and Valley are among the tops in the sixth. The seventh is tough with Trinity and Ballard at the top.
I plan on checking out SL-Dunbar in February. Man the 11th is tough with Scott Co, Dunbar and Lex Catholic.

You're right. I assumed Fern Creek was in the 7th with Trinity because they've played them twice already. If PRP plays to their potential, they could very well win the 6th. Probably the most talented team in that region, with the best coach, but the chemistry and attitudes on that team are very hit or miss. But they are loaded.
