Who will be the next coach at Shelby Valley?
#31
They care nothing about football there.. The next head coach will be someone who benefits the administration politically. My bet is that the boy who's mommy works at the BOE gets the job. However, he will have a professional throat cutter as his assistant who has been cutting throats for the last decade.
#32
My quess is they will try to bring someone in. This is usually the Principals decision, I mean the site based committee. Lol. BOE is out of money for new hires. Doesn't SV have 4 assistant coaches teaching there now? Pick the one with the most seniority and move ahead. Hampton has set back for years and should get the job if he applies.
#33
I say give the job to David Osborne. Simple as that.
#34
You want a guy that's gonna be fair and play the best kids where they should be on the field, then hire Dave Osborne. Great guy, great leader, great people person, and knows the game of football inside and out. You don't need an outsider coming in when you already have someone there like him that knows the kids and the system already.

You are right, it is called assistants, then OC, DC, then HC, in a perfect world.

All of you who say middle school coaches don't know what it takes to run a program probably don't run very good middle school programs either lol

Amen!!!!! Can't assume an "outsider" won't be great at the position! Word on the street is Osborne isn't applying!

We don't live in a perfect world lol

I dont get on here much, but just HAVE to share what I know. Just got off the phone with a source on the inside. They have the search narrowed down to 2. 1 is an outsider. The other is current oline coach mahalick. Makes sense: been around the program a few years, knows the kids, knows the coaches, and most importantly KNOWS FOOTBALL! Youd figure hes seen how to and not to run a program by now. Kid played at virginia tech I believe so has seen and knows a lot more than anyone around here. Thoughts?

Mahalick? Virginia Tech??

Ya, he's coaching their o and d line. He came in under Stepp and worked with Ratliff as well.
#42
There's no one by that name that currently coaches at Valley that I'm aware of
#43
footballfan06, im surprised you are not aware. Your knowledge of valley football is good. Hes the giant of a human on the sidelines from time to time. Think he mostly volunteers. Hes been there for a while now and my source I talked to tonight said hes been doing a great job with the boys in the weight room lately too.
#44
Well, hopefully he can build a good program and commit because that's what Valley needs!
#45
Well, either him or the other candidate. My source kept them on the extreme downlow. No names or descriptions were given. Seems really weird. Wonder what kind of funny business they're up to over there. But staying with a coach who is already there and qualified seems like a no brainer to me.

I know Dave. I have a ton of respect for him. I'd say he's Valleys best bet.
#47
Dave is a great guy and would do a great job! Most importantly, Shelby Valley needs someone who will commit and stay put!

Found out some more on this o line coach. Turns out he played at virginia, not Virginia tech. Poor guy. Heard he is running some workouts and putting the kids through drills. Hes done a nice job with the oline these past couple of years. I asked if he would stick around if he got the job, they said they believe he would. Especially if they could get him a job at the school.

You seem to be awful interested in the guy. You mentioned him a couple years ago when they were looking for a coach too. Confusedhh:

Youre darn right. Anytime a guy with his experience comes to town coaches and principals should be interested! In suprised coaches aren't drooling over this guy. Heck, I just wanna pick his brain myself!

There are other applicants that have played college football and KNOW the game as well.

Just because someone played ball at Virginia or Virginia Tech or Green Bay Packers, that doesn't mean they'll be a good coach. That is a dumb statement to make especially when they've never called a play in a high school game. If that was the case people left and right would become football coaches.

I understand what you're saying. But specifically speaking, have you seen this guys coach? The success they've been having since he's been there is much improved from before he got there. It's hard to stop their running game. And I've seen the guy on the sideline and up top in the booth. Looks like he does it all. I'm impressed and would like to see what he could do.

Fair points. I know somewhat about the guy.

My Rebuttal:

Eric Ratliff was the cause of Valley's success. Mr. UVA arrived in 2013, before Ratliff got there. During the 2013 season Shelby Valley wasn't very good. They got beat (at home) by East Ridge, a team coached by Eric Ratliff. I wish Mr. UVA and the Wildcats well, but tough times may be brewing on Robinson Creek for the footballers.

Real Badman, your opinions are valued. Do you see them going in house or someone else?

My opinion may not be valued, and that's fine. But I don't see them hiring the Mahalick dude. I do see them hiring Hampton or Johnson.
#57
In my opinion, they will sort the basketball mess first. Are they going to fire Jim Bob Hicks? If they do they have two PE jobs open. How will that affect hiring a football coach? If you hire Hampton or Johnson, well they're already in building so you have two open jobs. Do you use them for two basketball coaches if necessary? It will show Shelby Valley High Schools true intentions with that they do.

Notice: Eric Ratliff was the Dean of Students, but was still listed as a Physical Education teacher. They may or may not keep this position open.

Giving all of the credit to coaches is sort misleading. SV had a bunch of talent over the past 2 seasons so it was actually a combination of coaching plus talent.

Very true coaches can only do so much, they can put kids in the right position but the kids have to to make the plays. It's takes a team to win not just one or two stars players or even a coach it takes a team effort. Valley was very good the last two years because of everyone being on same pages and working together for one goal.
